Shang-Chi's Simu Liu Refuses to Sign Master of Kung Fu Comics

Archive

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings actor Simu Liu will not be signing any copies of the Masters of Kung Fu comics or any other offensive works at fan conventions.

A stipulation was added to his upcoming appearance at Awesome Con that he will not sign Master of Kung Fu comics or "other comics deemed offensive". The character of Shang-Chi was introduced in Special Marvel Edition #15 in December 1973. When the character was brought back for the two following issues, the title of Special Marvel Edition was changed to The Hands of Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu. Despite being the original comic book run for Shang-Chi, the Master of Kung Fu title has many outdated and offensive cultural stereotypes.

Liu has proven himself as a champion of Asian rights and culture in the past. Speaking at an awards ceremony while receiving the Breakout in Film honor, the actor referred to himself as "unapologetically Asian." "There are so many people here tonight fighting the good fight," Liu said in his speech, "Showing me what it means to be unapologetically Asian... The more I think about it, the more it feels like a super power."

Shang-Chi co-star Awkwafina has been battling accusations that she is culturally insensitive herself. In February, the actor addressed complaints on Twitter about her use of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) before leaving the platform. Many were dissatisfied with her comments on the issue, with some pointing out that her statements offered an explanation but no apology. Awkwafina had originally tweeted, "As a non-black POC, I stand by the fact that I will always listen and work tirelessly to understand the history and context of AAVE, what is deemed appropriate or backwards towards the progress of ANY and EVERY marginalized group," before stressing that she never intended to mock anyone.

Iron Man 3 managed to sidestep any accusations of cultural insensitivity with its depiction of The Mandarin, which wound up being a fakeout and turned the villain into nothing more than a British actor, Trevor Slattery (Sir Ben Kingsley). Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings introduced the real Mandarin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though his backstory and character were changed significantly from his comic book counterpart. Shang-Chi also brought back Kingsley for the role of Slatterly, following up on his apparent disappearance in the MCU one-shot, All Hail the King.

Simu Liu will be in attendance at Awesome Con on June 4, 2022, alongside Shang-Chi actors Meng’er Zhang and Florian Munteanu. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now streaming on Disney+.

What a peice of shit!!!! Seriously that's the comic your movie was based off of. And your going to act like a asshole to a fan.

Seriously it seems the latest marvel movies they want to find the most SJW assholes possible to star as the main leads.

I thought Shang Chi was a surprisingly good movie, but who's really lining up for this guy? I keep forgetting he exists.
I mean I'm sure there are people who will see him, but people that have vintage copies of these comics? I mean they're not Amazing Fantasy 15, but I'd have to think these aren't exactly prolific enough for a bunch of normies to even have them.

Did they recently do a reprint or something? Otherwise this sounds like virtue signaling performative bullshit on his part.

This is what I worry is next for Wokeism, believing that fiction is real.

These people already have such creepily childlike minds, they’d believe some science fiction claptrap to explain why fictional characters have crossed over into reality, are we seeing the seeds being planted with the introduction of the concept of multiverses and the like?

If you want to keep getting real tinfoil hat you can say that superheroes were always created with the intent to one day replace world Religions.
Your already seeing the start of that with shit like “how the avengers would respond to the Capitol kerfuffle/ Ukraine” a thread and those Harry Potter fans that radical white cleric professional school shooter and gaslighter Russian/ukranian uberkommando hitlers top guy Samadat Allah Hyadeen covered.

This one comment I found summed it up perfectly

“Harry Potter is the ultimate female power fantasy: where words thoughts and beliefs have a tangible effect on real life. They get to skip the social manipulation aspect and directly direct their will on reality.”

No, but they were different from the trailer. The trailers actually did a pretty good job at hiding the story.

The Daily Bugle is repeatedly mentioned and shown, Spider-Man is directly referenced once, and Vulture shows up at the end and proposes he and Vulture work together. It seems like Vulture was sent across to Morbius' world due to what happened during No Way Home.

Well I have to say I enjoyed episode 1 of Moon Knight more than I thought I would. It could be the fact that I'm not crazy familiar with the Moon Knight character, but I appreciated not being beaten over the head with MCU references, and the one BIG action sequence being used to highlight the overall weirdness of the show was refreshing. The ending was a tad abrupt but hey, it's the first episode, what can you do.

Seriously though, I'm hoping this show manages to break the MCU show curse. The thing that has fucking annoyed me about every single MCU Show is that they pretend that they're something completely different while simultaneously pretending they're the exact same as the movies (except they're TV shows!). It's so fucking irritating to see any attempts at developing a character be interrupted like "MEMBAH STARK INDUSTRIES? MEMBAH THE THANOS SNAP????". Seriously, I had no fucking problem believing Daredevil was canon in the MCU and there was like maybe a total of three references to the Avengers in that entire series.

Capeshits advocate; everyone up until Kate Bishop they focused on was a "major player" that they more or less had to acknowledge either was (Wanda, Loki) or was about to be (Falcon) a significant deal in-universe going forward. Moving forward with lesser known/street level shit should give them much more flexibility.

Kate Bishop shot up a Christmas party filled with the city's richest and most powerful citizens, destroyed a city landmark (the Christmas tree) and beat up the most powerful crime lord in New York.

In other words, she is far more visible and notorious than Thor, Dr. Strange or Ant-Man during their first outings.

Nah more like that show could more or less be a blank slate about whatever they wanted (barring needing to have Clint involved so it could make her "a Hawkeye"). You pretty much had no choice but to make WandaVision about Scarlet Witch and her dead husband, Loki about how and what he did to undead himself, Falcon dealing with being New and likely not accepted Captain America, etc. All of them had very specific plot things pretty much built in from the start because of the two Avenger's movies.

Whereas Moon Knight could just be a proper stand alone, She-Hulk doesn't need to tackle anything outside of "this lady turns herself into a Hulk", etc.

Just want to say that I really had no idea that they’re making a Morbius movie with Jared Leto this weekend.

Though, I also forget that Jared Leto is an actor.

And yet magic still isn't good enough against people with guns. What hurts all the Harry Potter movies was that desaturated color palate in all of them. It's a magical fantasy world, but the primary colors are black and brown?!
