“I’m considering living in the wild, just trotting around the globe with little money,” reads a post on a Reddit forum for Neets. “I was working [in] a retail store and the first few hours were OK, then I had to deal with customers,” reads another. “I packed my bag and just left.”

In this forum, a community of 44,000 people from around the world share advice and discuss the challenges of being a Neet — an acronym for not in education, employment or training.

It is not just an online phenomenon. “I could never go back to working a normal job again,” Morgan, who left his role in 2020 and asked to remain anonymous, told the FT. “With inflation and rents rising, the incentive to devote all of my time to an employer to barely scrape by didn’t make sense any more.”

In the third quarter of this year, official UK figures showed 13 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds were Neets, nearly 1mn people. Two-fifths of these were looking for work; the rest were “economically inactive”, neither working nor looking, opting out of the labour market completely.

This puts the number of economically inactive young people close to its highest level — a similar story in Europe and the US, where more than 1 in 10 young people are Neets.

While the term first gained traction in 1990s UK government policy, which sought to help older teenagers into work, it has since been adopted internationally and by a wider subculture of economically inactive people. Reddit’s Neet forum includes people in their 50s; recent posts depict a “self-loathing man of inaction late 20s/early 30s” or ask if “30+ NEETS [can] turn their life around?”

After starting out as a car salesman ten years ago, Morgan, now 30, was forced out of work by depression and an illness that took him in and out of hospital. When he recovered, the pandemic had shut his industry down: he opted out of work, using the time to teach himself how to repair old cars and post videos online.

“My time to develop my interests was worth more than I could make working, even if it wasn’t making me any money,” he says. But eventually the bills began to pile up. “I was put out on the street for unpaid rent. I lived in my car for a few days before a friend took me in. I’m lucky that’s where I am today.”

Josh, 24, dropped out of university after deciding it wasn’t worth the money. “I went on to have a few retail jobs but I found it tough to interact with people in the workplace because of my social anxiety,” he told the FT. I’ve moved back in with my parents now, who are able to support me. I help my mum around the house and I’m trying to teach myself programming.”

Louise Murphy, economist at the Resolution Foundation think-tank, says mental health is one driver of rising Neet numbers: in 20 years, the proportion of young people reporting a disorder such as anxiety or bipolar has increased from a quarter to a third. This makes them more likely to be out of work: an RF report found between 2018 and 2022, 21 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds with mental health problems were jobless, compared with 13 per cent of those without.

Niall O’Higgins, an International Labour Organization economist, suggests younger people are also disenchanted with the quality of jobs on offer, and are “lacking prospects for development, workplace training and the ability to build up their options”.

Employers make themselves more attractive, he says, by offering flexibility and support, including “exploring alternatives in terms of organisation of work”. In a survey of Gen Z workers by talent sourcing platform A.Team, 80 per cent said the four-day working week should be the norm, 60 per cent would like a hybrid working model, and half valued training opportunities.

Murphy says nurturing relationships can have a significant impact. “When we asked what young people would change about the world of work, they didn’t ask for big, flashy reforms. They wanted to have more human, understanding managers.” This might include additions like one-to-one catch-ups which are not the norm in all professions.

“I resent the accusation that young people don’t want to work,” Morgan says. “Everyone wants to contribute, but the reward for devoting your time to doing so is no longer worth it in many cases.”

I'm unfamiliar with the specific rules with threads but why is there not a particular thread for general UK stuff? Whenever there is a news thread related to anything in the UK it just turns into random topics etc (I'm guilty of that also), I am aware we have the general news thread but feel It makes more sense to have a "normal" general thread for anything UK related/UK members etc, if this isn't normal for the farms then apologies I just thought it would make more sense. I know

My wife and I work regular jobs and could afford a h ouse before we were 30. Move to the US. We have more space and more money.

You just can't keep up.
Get a raise. Get a new job that pays way more. Blamo. Eggs are now $10/dozen and now you get to live like your great grandparents during the great depression except now there are hordes of foreigners pouring in by the millions taken care of with your tax dollars competing with you for the corpse of your nation.

Honestly, I'm just waiting for all the damn Boomers to die off. No not because of "total Boomer death" or anything like that, but because that's when the real fun begins.
Bingo.

There's going to be a catastrophic power vacuum once the boomers are gone. I would even venture to say their Smaug-like lifestyle is responsible for holding off the next reset. It's hard to change anything when the biggest power bloc uses every lever to ensure the status quo continues until after they're gone. Once the first domino falls, there's no stopping the rest.

The next great mustache man will arrive in the late 30s, early 40s. A little late, but beggars can't be choosers.

The best we can hope for is a permanent end to globohomo. The least we'll get is clown world on ultra-steroids.

We have our own thread but we just like to colonise other ones. It’s in our nature.

I mean, TL;DR, if your standard of living is going to be exactly the same whether you work or not, then why would you work?
For all the arguments, this is pretty much it.

Personally, I think there is a moral imperative to work and be self-sufficient, and I think it's a terrible sign for society if that sense goes away.

However, if I was single, and the best I could do was find part-time work... well, welfare pays the same, so I'd rather go hunting all through the winter, and spend my summers at the beach.

The reasons (boomers, migrants, etc) are important, but the fact that a significant proportion of the population is just giving up is far more concerning. It shows that society is becoming unstable.

But no let's turn healthcare into a business, housing into investments, and let the old starve to death cos they didn't manage to save up for the final 20-30 years of their live.

Comparing a hard working person who spent their entire life contributing to the system and the society, to a migrant nigger free loader is so fucking stupid that I recommend you put a gun in your mouth and pull a trigger.
How dare you try to confiscate my stolen wealth that I mortgaged the entire future of the country on so I could smoke dope at Woodstock.
And dodge the Vietnam War draft was spitting on US veterans.
Boomers always will defend the fellow boomers from wealth redistribution boomers should have all of the houses confiscated the retirement counts emptied and put to work in coal mines even though we don't really use coal anymore.
Social Security is a form of communism but instead of class its age imagine creating a way of stealing from future generations so you could **** yourself in depends and not have to have a job

It's become unstable because the elites are tired of the plebs having any standards and look at turd worlders as being far more pliable.

The idea of having to save for retirement when you live in a first world country is insane. You pay taxes all your life, you're taxed on your salary , taxed when you buy something, taxed when you sell something, you have to pay to raise the children and you're also supposed to be saving for a fucking retirement?

Free healthcare , housing, looking after the elderly and disabled, these are pillars of a functioning developed society.

But no let's turn healthcare into a business, housing into investments, and let the old starve to death cos they didn't manage to save up for the final 20-30 years of their live.

Exactly they WERE useful. Now they're so useless they can't even feed and look after themselves. Reality itself is saying time's up

I can't think of a single good reason for keeping humans alive after 75, not in terms of utility, quality of life, proper distribution of resources. Nothing

And the more of our social output we piss up that wall, the less of it is going to the useful parts of society

How dare you suggest that people pool their resources, work, and succeed.

Don't you know marriage is totally dead in the west and working for anything but minimum wage for 30 years is impossible? Get with the blackpill program, already!

How old are you now?

Suggest as you approach 75 your attitude may change. Normally by 75 one is a grandparent, has a lot of things to look back at, is a source of experience and wisdom. Many 75 and older still contribute to society in various ways.

Mid thirties

It's honestly bad enough with the way my body doesn't bounce back like it used to now, and I keep a 6 day/week gym routine and don't really eat shite

I can't imagine the depression after 40 more years of breaking down and remembering that it wasn't always like this. That's actual torture

Am 70 next year. Indeed, the body isn't what it used to be but the mind works as well as ever. You compensate. You understand your physical limitations. You keep that brain active.

If nothing else, the passage of time provides perspective. I don't live in the past. I live in the present and look towards the future, fully aware I don't have as many days in front of me as I do behind me. Also know damned well that tomorrow isn't guaranteed to any of us. Have stared death in the face. Personally have outlived many in my high school class, as well as my parents and two younger brothers.

Until God decides it's time to go I'll just keep on trucking. 👍

Because younger people are realizing the diminishing returns far sooner than older people they learned from. My grandmother is royally fucked over despite how hard she worked to the point of neglecting her children to make dough. In 2008 it went downhill. Gen Z might be one of the more vivid generations to say "fuck that" openly, disregarding that they might be considered "lazy" or a deadender. I'd rather not break my back for 40 years doing shit I hate with medical bills up the arse just to realize how pensions were done away with and how much of a scam retirement has become. I AM PAYING TO DIE POSSIBLY WITH DEMENTIA OR NO LONGER BEING WHO I AM NOW. WHAT IS WORTH THE SAVINGS BEYOND BEGINNING A FAMILY? Beginning a family has also become more difficult, even with jobs. You get jack shit in the neverending game. Younger people will seek out ways to live their lives without the middlemen older people were forced to have (which is to say, unlikely to change the world for the better but call out the absurdity of it all). Younger people are entitled to their life and their youth, as long as they make their ends meet and keep strong relationships instead of withering away in let's say a mobile home collecting a small fraction of what their hard work was supposed to provide. At least in my opinion it is logical for why people are becoming more cautious of jobs and higher positions given the price of time investment. I don't believe in being a NEET, but I don't blame people who happen to be. Best we can do is experiment and see what happens, as mistakes are unavoidable in life. Better to live trying (something) than die with indolence.
I have zero trust that this failing system will get any better due to the way America works under democracy. It holds back our economy. It holds back daily life, but it isn't gonna go away anytime soon. So we're told to suck it up. We do despite the complaints. I don't see the lie of "this generation will fix and save the world"... if the world we live in does not want to be saved or fixed. It wants things to remain the same. Degrees have diminishing value to a poorer person even if they are educated, despite what we were taught in economics. You would need to at least spend 10+ years doing taxing labor just to get the ill gotten gains you are advertised. Or... so it was. Now degrees are less valuable when some foreigner can do your job for half the time, half the work, half the PRICE from any company. Whats the fucking point? To survive, but it isn't living like it once was even in times of peril. Sometimes I think I would prefer living under shit like the dark ages because at least I would understand my purpose and role, and maybe be more motivated. Survival means less these days since you are guranteed a sliver of food to keep you fed, but also guranteed middlemen on top of the government who regularly fuck your hard work into the ground. Your work means nothing. You are replaceable, you are essentially backed into self-employment but then its so regulated that people are discouraged from the risks. Big Brother and Big Corpo are much easier to work for because they know they have their hands around competitors throats via regulation. All these scientists are fucking governmental puppets, all of these most qualified people are just everyday assholes you don't care for. I don't think its all black and white, but I don't see it getting better until extremes like secession happen. (It won't.) There is not enough words to properly convey my opinions for why I think its all a joke but it feels good to rant about the diminishing returns even if older people usually disregard it. I'd rather make my money with odd jobs or under the table than go through the process of faggy illusory teamwork that goes nowhere.

Because there is no upward mobility anymore. People used to be able to work at a company for 50 years and there used to be loyalty both ways. Now the second line go down, they start axing everyone they can.
