“I’m considering living in the wild, just trotting around the globe with little money,” reads a post on a Reddit forum for Neets. “I was working [in] a retail store and the first few hours were OK, then I had to deal with customers,” reads another. “I packed my bag and just left.”

In this forum, a community of 44,000 people from around the world share advice and discuss the challenges of being a Neet — an acronym for not in education, employment or training.

It is not just an online phenomenon. “I could never go back to working a normal job again,” Morgan, who left his role in 2020 and asked to remain anonymous, told the FT. “With inflation and rents rising, the incentive to devote all of my time to an employer to barely scrape by didn’t make sense any more.”

In the third quarter of this year, official UK figures showed 13 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds were Neets, nearly 1mn people. Two-fifths of these were looking for work; the rest were “economically inactive”, neither working nor looking, opting out of the labour market completely.

This puts the number of economically inactive young people close to its highest level — a similar story in Europe and the US, where more than 1 in 10 young people are Neets.

While the term first gained traction in 1990s UK government policy, which sought to help older teenagers into work, it has since been adopted internationally and by a wider subculture of economically inactive people. Reddit’s Neet forum includes people in their 50s; recent posts depict a “self-loathing man of inaction late 20s/early 30s” or ask if “30+ NEETS [can] turn their life around?”

After starting out as a car salesman ten years ago, Morgan, now 30, was forced out of work by depression and an illness that took him in and out of hospital. When he recovered, the pandemic had shut his industry down: he opted out of work, using the time to teach himself how to repair old cars and post videos online.

“My time to develop my interests was worth more than I could make working, even if it wasn’t making me any money,” he says. But eventually the bills began to pile up. “I was put out on the street for unpaid rent. I lived in my car for a few days before a friend took me in. I’m lucky that’s where I am today.”

Josh, 24, dropped out of university after deciding it wasn’t worth the money. “I went on to have a few retail jobs but I found it tough to interact with people in the workplace because of my social anxiety,” he told the FT. I’ve moved back in with my parents now, who are able to support me. I help my mum around the house and I’m trying to teach myself programming.”

Louise Murphy, economist at the Resolution Foundation think-tank, says mental health is one driver of rising Neet numbers: in 20 years, the proportion of young people reporting a disorder such as anxiety or bipolar has increased from a quarter to a third. This makes them more likely to be out of work: an RF report found between 2018 and 2022, 21 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds with mental health problems were jobless, compared with 13 per cent of those without.

Niall O’Higgins, an International Labour Organization economist, suggests younger people are also disenchanted with the quality of jobs on offer, and are “lacking prospects for development, workplace training and the ability to build up their options”.

Employers make themselves more attractive, he says, by offering flexibility and support, including “exploring alternatives in terms of organisation of work”. In a survey of Gen Z workers by talent sourcing platform A.Team, 80 per cent said the four-day working week should be the norm, 60 per cent would like a hybrid working model, and half valued training opportunities.

Murphy says nurturing relationships can have a significant impact. “When we asked what young people would change about the world of work, they didn’t ask for big, flashy reforms. They wanted to have more human, understanding managers.” This might include additions like one-to-one catch-ups which are not the norm in all professions.

“I resent the accusation that young people don’t want to work,” Morgan says. “Everyone wants to contribute, but the reward for devoting your time to doing so is no longer worth it in many cases.”

Because they're fucking lazy and there's no incentive to work nor punishment to not work. Cut the benefits from all, including Ali and Umbungo, for them to work or be deported - if foreign, or starve to death if they're native.

It may sound harsh, but a really fucking bad recession with absolute poverty and desperation is what the UK needs to really sharpen its' senses to what is important.

Anyone who says they're poor today - especially while using an iphone or having a netflix subscription, needs a tenner in a gulag.
You tell others who don't agree to off themselves because your perspective is oh so correct, yes? Actually, kill yourself.

For reference first, the population of the UK is over 60 million, the biggest stadium in the world holds 150,000 people so close to about 1/5th of the people represented in the "data" they mention, just like talking about this sometimes, making things easier to visualize is easy if you use Google often.

Weird, you know what that number looks awfully like? Hey, guess what, that's about the number of migrants the UK brings in each year. Funny how young people aren't working when there's a legion of foreigners being brought in to replace them.

Official figures show that 728,000 people came to the UK in the year to June 2024 - fewer than in the previous 12-months.

The fall was greater than expected because the estimated number of people who came in the year to June 2023 has been revised up sharply, to 906,000.

Exactly they WERE useful. Now they're so useless they can't even feed and look after themselves. Reality itself is saying time's up

I can't think of a single good reason for keeping humans alive after 75, not in terms of utility, quality of life, proper distribution of resources. Nothing

And the more of our social output we piss up that wall, the less of it is going to the useful parts of society

Ok Adolf.

I think anyone who had loving grandparents can think of good reasons for them to stay alive as long as possible.

Age alone isn't an indication of anything. I mean fucking Trump is 78.

Killing off the elderly because supposedly they are a drain on the system, when governments spend godzillions on wars, refugees, donations to Africa etc, isn't going to solve shit.

Hard to say if some of you niggers are serious or joking with these crime against humanity ideas, and it's disturbing regardless.

Telling old people they should just die is a product of lolbergtarianism where people are just economic units and the moment your economic value becomes zero is when it’s time to fuck off forever. It’s the same mindset that has led to importing millions of hostile foreigners, because even though they are just dead weight, they can be assigned some debt and can do some menial work now and then so therefore we should get an endless supply of them.

A lot of interesting discussion here but surprised no one has mentioned the total failure of the government to weild antitrust shit against Google, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft (among others), massive supermarket chains, Spotify, fast food restaurants and everything else.

These companies, particularly those that run the entire world's social media have turned other companies efforts into fucking hyper competitive bullshit where it's harder and harder to run/start a real business and more and more people just want to do a faggy "side hustle". None of those major companies do shit on a local level in 99% of the world but have been allowed to totally dominate it.

At the same time they paid out retard level salaries before which fucked up everything.

I'm not sure how I feel. I've broken my back working my ass off with ridiculous hours and atrocious conditions for what feels like pretty much nothing in the long term. I'm at a stage at my life where it feels like I should be able to get a very well paying role almost anywhere but having been semi-NEET for some time it appears that companies mostly value a sort of manipulative and useless type of person who can't describe reality. Most people in companies don't seem to be able to grasp the larger picture of things.

I'm very tempted to walk away from pursuing anything high level and just get a boring fucking job at this stage because I can't be fucked for the social niceties that companies expect you to have.

I would say I have access to a ludicrous amount of nepotistic-type contacts and networking - but at my core I can't put a suit on with a fake smile and become a part of some heartless megacorp that makes it's money from robbing people blind. And it seems that is actually how most companies work. It also seems like to get paid decently you need to be able to "fit in" but it you're obsessive/autistic and just work full speed there's literally no benefit in it for you. Everyone else will benefit from it but the moment you want something they won't stick up for you or do anything to make you happy.

I don't know how I feel about immigrants but my experience would be very different to what most people are talking about here but it definitely feels like immigrants have questionable qualifications and don't have the ability or desire to be critical about things, which opens the floodgates to worse working conditions and a whole bunch of shit. On top of that almost all of them do nothing besides work, have little cultural insight/value, save money to a ridiculous level and normalize shit like the "side hustle" bullshit.

Outside of all of that it does at times feel like rather than becoming a socially acceptable criminal (a person who wears a suit and climbs the ladder) it is tempting to just try and become a legit criminal (not a violent one but engage in grey market shit and submitting fake invoices to Facebook and whatever else) because it seems that shit pays exceptionally well.

Even worse is that faggy companies like Google, Facebook and Apple have allowed the "socially acceptable criminals" to take over the entire internet, ruin everything that made it special and interesting just so they can obtain more power.

Google and Facebook totally killed the financially viability of being an independent journalist or writer or photographer unless you're extremely high level. In so many industries rather than being a part of a company where there is a symbiotic relationship success is instead found in being some sort of psychopathic multi talented faggot who can simultaneously scam grandma, successfully self-advertise yourself, run a business, exploit people to work for you with absolutely no commitment back to them. It's impossible to do this shit and it's overwhelming.

To get a decent/high level job you're expected to be great at social networking, run a fucking personal blog, have your own hobby projects, run your own companies and a list of other shit. And when I look at so many people that actually do this shit tons of it is just totally soulless ("omg look at what Steve Jobs wrote when he had ass cancer it's so inspiring"). I rarely see any real human emotion from people like this and instead see one of the worst things possible: professionalism

Our society is doomed to collapse because of this. I'm serious when I say that. You can't pretend to be meritocratic without actual meritocracy. Instead, it's all just nepotism. Except they call it networking. Applying for jobs is pointless. I'd even say if you're applying for a job, you've already lost at life. You will never be picked because there are already a dozen people x or y knows they can choose from. It's all going to be the worthless faggots in society who got their job from daddy and their dick riders. Just look at any and all modern media for proof. Lost billions and they're still pushing out shit because they're too inbred to criticize each other being a bunch of pants shitters. It's all a fucking joke.
yes, i just woke up and am drinking my first coffee of the day, how did you know?

It's not even really nepotism. It's really just about how well you can "socialize".
And you can land a job without having that but when it comes to climbing the ladder or having people listen to you it's basically a requirement - like it's a fucking fun social club and not a job.
Especially if you start saying things how they are and talking reality, then people will hate you very quickly and ostracize you and cut you out of shit.

whatever happened to professionalism?
i supposed that went out the picture with being an adult

It’s not good enough to be good at your job, you have to been seen by the right people to be good at your job.

Mostly importantly you also have to show you’re an adult who can have an adult conversation with other managers.

If you’re great at your job, can’t look a woman in the eye, and want to drop redpills about Jews to any man that listens you’re going nowhere.

Autists and millennials can cry about this until the cows come home but this is not only how the world works, it’s now it’s always worked.

I try and separate my private life from work as much as possible, so I don’t mind people I don’t like if they can do a good job but very few people are like me.

For the love of god, don’t act like autists in work. Say hello to people of a morning and ask how they are when you bump into them getting a coffee and you’ll do more for your career than smashing your targets whilst ranting about fiat currency and the Rothschilds.

no shit

except in this case it's likely about trannies and niggers dying because they ate their drugs while being arrested

It depends on the role and industry but there's definitely a way bigger expectation put on people to act in stupid fucking social media videos and shit like that.

The workplace has also become infected with HR people who literally have nothing better to do. There's fucking rules upon rules upon rules for socializing and it's totally overwhelming and retarded.

It used to be a lot more accepted that certain people wouldn't deal with customers or clients and were just good at their jobs that most people would never see (this was one of the plot points in Office Space where the stapler guy gets fired because they think he does nothing).

Under no circumstances have political conversations at work. Have them in a pub after work with people who are your friends.

If someone starts a political conversation at work it’s a trap. They donr want a discussion, they want you to parrot their views back to them. If you disagree that’s when the whispering campaign ramps up.

Shrug and change the subject. If that doesn’t work just say “I don’t believe this is a suitable conversation for a work place so I’d rather not have it.” Now you have become the danger who will report them.

You’re paid to work and these people aren’t your friends.

I never start them but I don't drop truth bombs when they happen either. Usually older people are way more open to talking about this kind of shit and give less of a fuck

It's still sound advice that you're giving but it's one of the reasons we ended up with NEETs to begin with - this constant having to walk on eggshells over the most mundane shit is a real turn off for people. And I get politics have become insane themselves which doesn't help but it should be totally fine for some adults at work to lightly discuss some politics bullshit and for no one to act like a crybaby and also for no one to try and drop hardcore truth bombs just to piss people off.

It's no wonder older generations fucked way more too. They weren't crybabies about every little fucking thing

I get this attitude but at the same time fuck it. If I'm working at a company that I actually want to be a part of and working on something I care about and working with people who should be fucking great at what they're going then we're going to socialize and we're going to argue and sperg over shit (so long as it's friendly).

What you're describing is appropriate for when you're like a day laborer or security guard - and even then those guys are going to be having way more fun.

If I'm actually working on something that requires creativity and intelligence then I will not work with people that have had lobotomies that remove any sense of personality.

People used to meet their life partners at work at quite decent rates. They'd chat, flirt and fuck and have kids. People would make friends and acquaintances.

And seriously if I can't have a fucking chat about some random politics shit at work then what's the point? I may as well become a NEET or a laborer. And if people lose their shit over someone having a different opinion then I wouldn't want to work with them in the first place (nor would I want to contribute to a project that would make them rich also - they can fuck off somewhere else)

I have some really capable people working for me who are fucking over their careers because they don’t seem to be able to accept that there’s a game to be played. They won’t learn the rules and are confused that they won’t get ahead.

By all rights they should be giving me orders but because they’re a decade younger they seem thunk things will just fall into their laps.
