Is this shit still in the only-kills-old-people category or do the rest of us need to stock up on gas masks and tins of beans and shit?

I know someone flying out of a major international airport next week. Is he gonna get wuflu, come back, and kill me with it?
The youngest adult to die from the Wu Flu is in their 30s, I think. Not sure about the children, though. Health orgs also emphasize on the immune system (like taking care of your physical wellbeing), which means people with strong immune systems wouldn‘t be affected as much.

Dunno if its been posted yet but I just found this on twitter and found it quite amusing. Apparently this guy is sitting at the entrance to his village with a fucking glaive to warn off potential plague carrying outsiders from entering
ErhJ7eYi1p35u98e.mp4

I wonder if we gonna see the Warlords make a comeback should this shit hit china as bad as some fear?
You say that, but from what other people in thread have been saying about potential replacements for Pooh bear, that might be a possibility. Xi gets ousted after the monumental fuck up of a disaster response, there are several more hawkish leaders that could take their own chunks of land and PLA and make their claims if this goes worst case scenario. I will take my optimistic ratings now.

The most optimistic assessment would be every other country freaking out, and nuking China.

There are contingencies for that eventuality. Nuclear being the upper range of extreme response. And I can guarantee the lower tier responses have been on stand-by since at least Friday.

I figure the most likely thing to come is most countries not allowing Chinese planes to land. Normally shipping wouldn't get blocked because any crew members would almost certainly be symptomatic prior to arrival, but given how Chinese ships have been known to have stowaways, you could see that getting blocked too.

Edit:
If shipping gets blocked, China is done for regardless since even if they stop the spread in their own country, it will take a long time for other nations to open the ports back up. Which means that the Chinese economy which mostly lives on exporting shitty goods is fucked.

I know here in Australia, customs hass already began screening and quarantine proceedures. Anything still on docks or in holding facilities likely won't be released. Flights to/from the PRC and the rest of SE Asia will be next if china can't convince DFAT (dept of foreign affairs and trade) they have their shit under control.

Apologies if this was already brought up

Yeah I was just about to post something about this as well.
to add to this (tho it might just repeat the same info):

the global economy would be absolutely fucked

The only way to look at this optimistically is if the Chinese government just overreacts for some reason, but considering the usual indifference they have for peasant lives it seems unlikely. I kinda wonder if there is something extra about the cases they aren't talking about.

Anyways, I'll start praying for our new lord and saviour:

There's a very real chance WARS could lead to the downfall of the CCP.

The economic damage of SARS was measured in the billions, it had an effect felt across the world. WARS, by all credible accounts, is far more lethal. They've had to shut down an entire province to contain it, and Wuhan itself has been described as the Chicago of China.

What is the impact to China's economy going to be? Their economy has been slowing down, even with the best lies the CCP had to offer they were only able to claim 6% growth this year. And now there's this massive disruption, this Black Swan event, which has the potential for a high mortality rate. Can the party actually afford this kind of disruption? For that matter, what happens if the West finally stands up to them?

China's power structure depends on the party being able to provide improvements to the quality of life to a very large set of people. When those stop, the propaganda stops working. In a very real sense, this structure depends on being able to import technology from the rest of the world and implement it effectively within their own industries.

Here's a story about one of those recent imports. It would be a step too far to suggest this is what lead to WARS, or that it's even the identical pathogen. But it certainly raises a question about why they are trying to acquire these kinds of pathogens. Corona Viruses are akin to the common cold, they are incredibly infectious and there is no known cure. Various countries in the West have established biosafety labs - BSLs - to study these things in a secure fashion designed to prevent outbreaks and hopefully lead to cures. Knowing that system is now broken is a major concern for the entire world, and will cause people to look closely at those tech transfer relationships. This is a national security issue for every country on Earth when China "takes" your weapons and doesn't know how to handle them.

Without the West, or with strong tech transfer protections, China loses its economy. Xi Xinpeng's claim to ruler for life status becomes less solid. The people who could replace him are mostly war hawks, it's hard to imagine them pursuing Belt and Road when they can annex entire countries to put them solidly under CCP control. A failing economy means soul searching for the CCP, in a country that demands strong leadership as the only claim to power. A conflict between 2 sides in the party - like an actual debate held over time - would be completely alien to Chinese politics. Were leaders to be openly questioning the direction of the country, it could lead to mass violence and destruction of the current social order.

This would be very bad for all parties.

My math may be off since I'm a bit tired, but wouldn't 2577/15701 be nearly 1/6 mortality rate?
You can't really calculate the mortality by number of dead over number of infected, you need number of dead over the sum of dead and recovered (end of infection). The official numbers are 80 dead, 54 recovered: 80/136 ~= 0.59 so about 59% mortality. But you must take into consideration that recovery may take a longer time while death can be relatively quick. The numbers are not a reliable indication at this early stage and deaths may get more attention than recoveries.

In case we didn’t need more evidence how fucked up, backstabbing, spineless, and selfish Chinese people are.

Chinese guy at HD somewhere in Seattle buying up all the n95 masks available (posted on reddit).
This photo was taken in Irvine, near the UC Irvine campus.

The first positive case you heard about yesterday was from Irvine. It was a student who just returned from China, she was in Wuhan. I don't have her name, but there's a rumor she was on Twitter talking about her escape and making other people sick. Jokingly. And now she has it.

27/01/2020Dump #1 (major, verified and important information)
2. Wuhan houses 11,000,000 residents. 11 million. There's only 500 million left. This is according to Wuhan's own statistics, there's no reason to lie here. This basically means there are 600 million people from Wuhan scattered out there, aka escapees. We will be seeing the heads of politicians in the area rolling

They let 6 million Typhoid Moo Goo Gai Pans flee!?

Jesus fuck.

The youngest adult to die from the Wu Flu is in their 30s, I think. Not sure about the children, though. Health orgs also emphasize on the immune system (like taking care of your physical wellbeing), which means people with strong immune systems wouldn‘t be affected as much.

Youngest was a 9 month old I heard?

[Part 1/2. So much stuff has happened that I hit the word limit for posts just linking to it all 😅]
EDIT: Added @Ivan Shatov's requests.

Goddamn does this thread move quick!

Anyway, since I'm finding all of this stuff coming out on the coronavirus fascinating (and Semper Fi to everyone aggregating and archiving this stuff, by the way!) I figured I'd make an index as I was reading to catch up on the thread. So if you're like me and new to the thread, hopefully you can skim through the posts below to get quickly caught up on what's happening, what's already been posted, etc. All the links to the posts are provided so you can get the details/check sources/whatever.

Also for you guys' enjoyment, and because I thought it was fittingly macabre, I've tried to format each of the post indices in a style reminiscent of the Plague Inc. news ticker. You're welcome! :heart-full:
