Since the US military hasn't a fly-only track for commissioned officers, this lieutenant colonel is more than just a fighter pilot, and apparently an F-35 pilot to boot. He could be a fighter squadron commander/operations chief, or hold a position at a Marine Air Group (next level up from a squadron) or a Marine Air Wing (next level up from a group). This man could be stationed at HQ Marine Corps, the Pentagon, or in other fairly high-level staff positions. The Marines will lose this man's ability and expertise just when it is needed most. Takes 16 years-plus to develop a lieutenant colonel/full commander. Should this man need to leave the Marines, would believe he'd have no problem flying for the airlines. Much more money, much better quality of life than the Marine Corps.

Good news where I am. Pre Christmas time, the government where I am in Europe decided to ramp up the measures for Omicron, and made it so that unless you were fully vaccinated, with the 3rd booster, you would not be able to go out to restaurants, clubs, bars, etc. These places would be made to check on whether you had a vax cert, and that if found failing to do so, fined x amount of Euros. This, as you can imagine, caused quite a shit stir, particularly because it required a 3rd booster to qualify, meaning that if you had taken one or two shots, doesn't count, you are unvaccinated.

So this rule finally rolled out about 9 days ago, and instantly the government comes under massive fucking fire from all directions. A lot of restaurants/bars/clubs decide that it's now the time to renovate for 3 weeks and give all their employees time off. Those that remain open, after a few days, get together and file court papers saying it's not viable or in law, and cite the logistical nightmare that this has created. Employees who are waiting to get boostered can't, and therefore can't go in. Customers are delayed in their service by overworked staff checking their certs. There is massive outcry from people who want to take the booster, but can't because of the backlog that is public health delaying shots till March and April.

Suddenly a court case from last year is ruled in favour of the citizen, stating that certain arms of the government (namely anyone not the police) do not have the power to issue fines to anyone related to covid rules, and that tens of thousands of fines are now null and void. The PM is suddenly calling every one of his ministers in one by one to see if he has support going into upcoming elections, and it's not looking good.

And so...9 days after this was announced, they government immediately back-pedalled, and from next month onwards, roughly 3 weeks from the date of implementation, that rule won't exist, everyone can go out without being questioned. Same thing with mandatory masks outside, it shifted back to what it was before, you don't have to wear it outside if you are vaccinated and in less than groups of 2 (which of course means everyone has suddenly taken the shot and is not wearing one). It's classic politician doing what they do best, running around to see if they will have a job soon while everyone else gets put through the shit and the economy craps itself even more.

When they taught us about the Holocaust in school years ago, they said "Never Forget" because they wanted us to be able to see it coming so it never happens again.

I assume that meant to recognize the signs of oppression, but didn't realize they meant "Never Forget (this exact specific thing that happened to Jews and is only a Holocaust if it happens again only to Jews in the exact same way with no parallels or similes)".

Thats exactly why I removed myself. And it was way easier than I expected. Took 90 seconds from "remove self from organ donor registry illinois." Only reason it took that long was I had to grab my wallet for my DL#, which I found out I no longer have memorized. Fuck 'em.
