Heart 100% in the right place. Message 100% for the wrong crowd.

We're autists. If we aren't given things to sperg about, we'll go looking for them or, failing even that, invent them ourselves.
Kinda like Scott Adams said about Engineers: "Engineers like to solve problems. If there are no problems handily available, they will create their own problems."

...and more information (because I'm REALLY trying to make this at least MOSTLY an information thread)
Maryland went on 'lockdown' (officially Shelter-In-Place) on 31-March or 1-April (sources say both). No expiration for this order was given.

Tips if you got shit-canned, 'furloughed': (my advice, ignore at your leisure)

-Take a FULL SEVEN DAYS OFF for you - and no one else. Be a selfish prick for 7 days. Expect others to tend to your needs. You are hurt and scared. Heal and allow others to serve you. Limit this to SEVEN DAYS. If you have nobody, well that sucks.
-Hit the job boards HARD afterwards. Competition is now roughly TEN TIMES WORSE than 3 months ago. It sucks.
-Don't forget about newspapers. At least give them a glance.
-Worst days on the job boards are Friday and Monday. 3 day weekends are fine
-Bothering companies in person (after the quarantine) leaves a strong impression. YMMV. Doesn't work for coding jobs, works good for Wal-Mart or factory jobs.
-Send out resumes to agencies. Consider gig or contract work. You have Corona insurance for at least 6 months in the US-federally funded.
-DO NOT PAY for 'Premium Memberships' or Pay Agencies. Always a scam.

Welp, that sucks. Government needs to keep people at home and discourage spreading the virus around by gathering in large groups, but we have the right to gather in large groups and the gov't can't take that away from us so fuck you we doin' it anyway. Don't mind the coughs.

Naturally it hasn't occurred to anyone that what the government is asking us to do (that it can't legally force us to do) is the right fucking thing to do. Far be it for us to voluntarily do the right thing and stay home, so our insistence on flexing our freedom muscles at all times just because we can is going to get us all a nice juicy dose of red lung.

God dammit.

After seeing what happened in Hungary where the country now joins Belarus as dictatorships in Europe I have become more outspoken against the idea of self quarantine and social distancing as it ripe for oppressive edicts to come out. Now their population dissident can be gunned down freely by claiming they have Coronavirus and no one is gonna save them from the full on dick up their ass

What states aren’t in lockdown and I include all the populated territories the U.S. has?

It's actually great. We're already starting to see more and more people growing a pair and speaking out against this draconian BS. Even mainstream articles against lockdowns are trickling in :)
The business community should be raising hell for letting the government rape their wallets in the name of "slowing down the spread of disease". Blanket orders of "your business must close" are ridiculous. I think employees should be allowed to stay home or be laid off if they feel concerned, but if a business owner can staff their business, get customers, and follow a few procedures (i.e. don't have too many people in your store at once, kick out anyone who seems sick, keep the place clean), there's no reason they shouldn't be allowed to stay open if they feel like it.

Guam, American Samoa, and US Virgin Islands are on some form of lockdown as well.

The Northern Mariana Islands confirmed their first two cases of COVID-19 on March 28; I'm not sure if they're locked down yet, but schools and government offices were closed on March 16.

Speaking from firsthand experience, there is no level of cleanliness or decontamination countermeasures that can compete with simply not having people come into contact with other people. This also does not account for asymptomatic carriers.

The business community is not a singular organism and plenty are perfectly fine with protecting themselves and their families in this way, and those that don't like it can turn on the news whenever they like to be reminded of the fact that severely sick and dead people do not spend money.

I get that. My point is skipping the "self quarantine and social distancing" step kills people. Because they get infected and die. Because they didn't stay home.

But at least the government didn't kill them via dictatorship, which is nice.

I ended my last comment on this with "god dammit" for a reason. It's because this situation absolutely sucks. You're completely right. Entities rarely, if ever, surrender power once it's granted. It's ripe for abuse. Freedom is of paramount importance. However, this virus kills people eagerly and spreads by simple proximity or contact. The best way to avoid spread is to keep everybody home. Some people are too selfish/stupid to understand this, so some kind of enforcement is needed to keep everyone safe. Then we come full circle again.

The amount of idiots I see congregating is really bad. I know sports are over for now. But gathering around on lawn chairs to watch your friends play basketball is not a good idea. Lots of sports are rerunning classic games on TV. Just watch those instead.

The bums and other wastes of life around here have started hanging outside of their shuttered liquor and chinese stores in groups.

It seems like most people are being smart. But just one group of coughing bums is enough to make a lot of people sick on their way to the bus or grocery store.

And plenty are perfectly fine with taking the risk of getting sick or even dying just as plenty are fine with that risk as they go out and want to buy things. Now neither group can take advantage of this because the government decided to listen to doctors (and not economists or anyone else on this) and completely close society in a failed attempt to stop the spread of disease which isn't too lethal anyway.

The fact anyone but a communist or some other authoritarian say things like this with a straight face (especially on a site like this which allegedly values freedoms and is full of people who dislike collectivism) continues to astound me. Society is so scared of death we'd rather burn it down than face the reality that a relatively small number of people will die a few years sooner than they were going to die.

Vermont orders Walmart, Target to stop selling non-essential items in the store

This is beyond retarded. Right now Walmart is a fucking lifeline. It is the ONLY place you can buy clothing and household goods besides Amazon, which isn't prioritizing your orders. It's not easy to shop via phone for some of this stuff; you need to see it and see what's available. Also just stopping people from wandering the toy aisles or garden isn't doing jack shit to stop people from shopping in the store if you are still letting them in to buy food and pharma.

It's just Vermont getting pissy at big boxes cause they fucking hate them. I wonder if this applies to Joe's General Store? Can i still buy a belt and maple syrup candy there when I go for bread and cheese? The net result is it just makes the average person's life harder. If they shut down these kind of sales and Amazon dies, we're pretty much fucked besides being able to buy food.

Yeah I get pretty upset when my neighbors play with live hand grenades in their front yard, too. Guess I'm just too "scared of death" to allow them to explore their freedoms without gov't interference. I'm such an authoritarian bastard.

Shall we send all the coofers to your front porch to share their freedom with you? Sounds like you've got room.

Trespassing is already a crime.

“This does not mean our kids will stop learning,” she said.

In checking work e-mail today, accounting practices were apparently added to the list of essential financial series (current list / archive). However, those personnel that can work at home are still encouraged, expected, or required to do so.

There's talk our governor might extend the safer at home guidelines for another six weeks which would take us through Memorial Day. The state legislature's majority leaders would rather see it extended through April to match up with Federal recommendations and then go from there, but the governor might make her six week extension via executive order instead *sigh*.
