yes, people are doing funny things, promoting niche content they're interested in, and sometimes even really overlooked gems. I've also noticed the ads tend to effectively draw in people who are actually interested in the content vs. global features which seem to invite the weakest pisstakes ever.

Still surprised this was such a controversial take, but I don't doubt much of this thread is due to a mixture of the ball getting rolling and factors like that stick it man paragraph much more than it's about the actual "sponser post = bad" take. Just look at any other instance of someone saying the same with either no reaction or a few people agreeing. I think I've even said it before and noone cared.

Again, my main annoyance with this thread is that I can't mute notification from select messages so keeping up with responses to my messages elsewhere is a pain in the ass right now.

Why not just scroll through the notifications to one in a thread you care about, or in response to a comment you made for which you're interested in replies, or is from someone one you're particularly curious in reading? Once you scroll past, the notification loses its green dot and doesn't show as new; you can also mark all read, iirc. You could also turn off notifications and just go back to threads of interest. If you've commented they'll be watched. But you know all of this already, because you've been here 10 years, off and on.

You seem to be asking for an intensely specific customization for something with a lot of customization already, and for minor wants that are already very simply addressed, provided one exercises a touch of self restraint and minimal effort.

As for spam generally, over 25 years ago I designated one email as my sign-up/ commercial/ "don't trust" email. For everything I care about or want to be sure to see, I use different emails. There are over half a million unread messages in that first email (not including what's been routed to the junk/ spam folder), and I've cleared out at least that much over time, likely far more. That is expected, and that is why I have that email account. That is how adult people work - a modicum of self-help organization, rather than demanding the spoon to be held to their lips, mouth gently pushed open, and then pushed closed once the food is delivered.

I assume you used a unique email for signing up here, for obvious reasons. If notifs are going to your email, turn that off (sounds like you did that, and if so your inbox point is moot, so why repeat?). I was originally just talking about on-site notifications, which, as mentioned, are easily scrolled through.

It's kind of funny you suggest you don't have the bandwidth even to, having turned off notifications and just watching threads (which btw is the default once you've posted, so it's done for you) scroll through a thread to find the only thing you're interested in, which apparently is engagement directly with you.

I also find it hard to believe that the number of responses you've received to 270ish comments is truly so overwhelming it's onerous either to get a notification on the site or to scroll through a thread looking for people talking directly to you. And...no one will die if you fail to respond.
