Decided to dive back into Darksiders 3.
Combat is so unbelievably ass, even compared to the slowest other Soulslike I can think of, Demon's Souls.
I beat the first boss easily, I guess I had to be in a different headspace. I turned off the music and suddenly combat flowed a fraction better.
The world feels so off compared to the previous two games, both because of how sluggish Fury feels even at her fastest and when the combat finally clicks, and because of the art direction.
I cannot understate just how ugly Darksiders 3 is. There's a lot of well-known faces from the previous games and they look recognisable, such as they are, but the stop-motion clay like look on the female Watcher is so weird. It's either clay, or a matte latex material.
Fury herself isn't offensive to look at, even if she's "less sexy" than Joe Mad's original designs for her. I'm not against making designs less sexy, but it's a weird choice to go with for no reason because she still has illogical armour choices, like 5 inch tall heels and a boob plate for a top. But perish the thought of showing off midriff and thigh skin, that's too sexy.
I decided to ease my frustrations with the game by cheat engine'ing in some more souls, because the "bonfires" are few and far between and you lose every single soft soul you've collected, if you die. The combat doesn't feel very responsive with regards to getting hit and taking damage. I'm playing with an 8BitDo pro controller, there is rumble but not for getting struck by an enemy for some reason.
Basically, Darksiders 3 is all of the wrong lessons to learn from a Soulslike.
No map, only a compass that feels incredibly vague.
Slow, sluggish movement from a protagonist who should by all indicators be a fast, zippy brawler.
You are forced to restart an area completely upon death. No real bloodstain to pick up your souls from except when you fulfil an unknown criteria - maybe you need over a certain amount of souls, I couldn't tell you because I gave myself 999.999 souls.
Despite being an allegedly linear game, apparently you can (almost) go anywhere at any point. It's a half-baked Metroidvania ontop of being a half-baked Soulslike, surprise!
I'll 100% it but I'm not too proud to admit that I cheated to give myself an edge. The combat is really just that shitty.
