There have been a lot of small things over the past few years that have made it very clear that Wu is big in to reading, or I suppose more accurately listening to, self-help books of the "how to win friends and influence people" genre. She spasmodically (ahem) tries out silly pop-psych techniques that she hears about that she thinks will help her be more influential or appear more authoritative, or whatever her goal is in that little mind of hers.

The aggressive head nodding is a fairly recent example, it wasn't always a part of her repertoire. I think the idea is that you convey to your interlocutor the idea that you're really listening or some shit. All this stuff she does is absolutely learned behaviour, she just doesn't do the obvious thing and try to discern whether it's actually achieving the goal she wants.

It's kind of ironic that behaviours Wu is trying that in her mind are supposed to help her manipulate people are exactly the sort of shit that PUAs have been wanking themselves dry over for years. Really, Wu is only a penis away from being everything her peer group hate.
 
People nodding while speaking is an old sales tactic, but it takes skill to have the right level of subtlety to actually influence someone. It also takes self awareness, which is obviously the problem with the version Wu is trying to do.

Except what it looks like is what John is actually feeling, which is incredibly impatient that somebody else is talking and like he's about to lunge at them and start screaming over them. It doesn't at all convey what a normal person would convey because it's so freakishly jerky and spasmodic. It looks angry and even insane.

Speaking as an engineer and professional Wustorian, why don't you think the nervous tics are due to brain damage/drug interactions?

I know for a fact that Gamergate is behind it all, but in your equally professional opinion, why don't you think the twitches and snarls have some kind of organic origin? I would agree that the head knodding is a misunderstanding of tips from sales and self-help books, but when John snarls or has the weird teeth-baring moments, those look uncontrolled.

On the she geeks out page the other two guests included a campaign video (roughly 60 seconds) with thumb nail of the candidate but Brianna include a six minute rant (logo only thumbnail)
As campaign manager (at the time) and organiser of the event was it your or Brianna's decision to ditch the campaign ads ? Did Brianna / you feel they were in someway unprofessional?

I've wondered if it could be Tourette Syndrome. The sole instance of TS that I have personally observed was a young (6 or 7 year old) boy, who had some uncontrollable and non-repetitive tics and grimaces that were strikingly similar to John's facial weirdness.

It might be part of it. I'm not a neurologist or anything. It seems deliberate that he makes these expressions at all, though. The most recent was when he was actually posing for a picture.

I'm pretty sure that the eldritch snarl is just John's attempt at imitating the smile that he has observed humans making when they are photographed. Whether his failure to mimic this expression is due to his full-blown case of sociopathic personality disorder or a reaction to psychotropic medication or some form of congenital cranio-facial nerve damage is anyone's guess.

Whatever the cause, the result is something from one of H.R. Giger's nightmares.

Although connecting the two candidates happened on my watch, the actual event and the prep for it happened after I left.
This terrible decision was not my idea.
By the way, Brianna has been saying for about 9 months that she needs a new headshot, and then not getting one. While also not letting people use the old ones. Any theories on why that is? I'm stumped.

As for the snarl:

Reminds me of the "nu-male smile"/"soy boy face" where people jokingly open their mouths and eyes really wide when smiling for photos to make it look like they're goofy and fun to be around. It of course doesn't work.

@W person cow is there anything you could share about the organization/logistics of the She Geeks Out event. Someone mentioned in the main thread that you were still on staff during the planning stages of the event.

The choice of video for http://livestream.shegeeksout.com/category/videos/election-series struck me as odd since the other candidates had shorter promotional ads as their intro videos. Could you comment on how the video was chosen? And if so how much control was given to the candidate/staff?
 
I was already gone before the choosing of the video. What I did was this:
-Rack my brains for somebody to endorse Brianna
-Ask pretty much every progressive politician I knew to endorse Brianna
-Sam Hammar was trying to make friends at Our Revolution Malden, and said yes without ever talking to Brianna, basically to be nice to me.
-I said look Brianna, I finally got somebody to endorse you!
-Brianna said what good are endorsements, I want fundraising.
-I asked Sam if she wanted to do a joint fundraiser with Brianna
-Sam said sure, and called in all her people to set something up
-Way fewer people wanted to come than Sam's typical fundraising events. Sam said "why don't we do She Geeks Out instead?"
-I said "perfect!"
-Sam said "Great, I'll set it up!"
-Brianna yelled at me for letting Sam cancel the fundraiser
(various other things happened)
-I got fired
(various other things happened, including the video)
-She Geeks Out happened.
So I don't know how the video happened.
My best guess is this: Brianna never made an overall campaign video besides the silly Godzilla one. She had one on Net Neutrality and like another one, but no good one to use for this. Because basically, Sam Hammar or Ayanna can get a video made for $100 that would cost Brianna $1000 or more. Filmmakers are used to being given insane demands by crazy celebs and would be celebs, they don't blink and just jack up the price. And not wanting to pay any filthy progressive peasants more than the pittance she paid me, she never made one. Which left her "having" to make her own for this event, or have no video at all. So she and Frank probably made it themselves on a webcam or something.

Oh I just watched the actual video. Not made on a webcam. That was her interview from WGBH-TV. I think she may have used the footage illegally without permission from WGBH lol.
