Not all states make you register for a party. In Illinois, you don’t register with a party, and you can ask for whichever party’s ballot you want during the primary election.
Zero states "make" you register for a party. In MA, where Brianna is flailing, the primaries are semi-open in that you can vote in either one as long as you are unaffiliated with any officially recognized party in the state (or vote in the primary of the party you're registered with). That also makes Warren's job somewhat easier, in that he can get signatures from people other than democrats... but any from republicans or libertarians are invalid.
If you're in the Massachusetts Pirate Party or Pizza Party (so not kidding) you're okay to sign because it's considered an affiliation rather than a full party.
