Are there any mods for the original that you guys would recommend for a first time play through? Kind of like how there's mods for System Shock 2 that improve the graphics.

I've always wanted to get into the tabeltop game but v5 seems like a hard pass, any recommendations for which edition to pick up?

The unofficial patch plus is what you need to make the game playable, the companion mod's pretty good even if it makes me incredibly uncomfortable how you recruit companions and after you finish the game try some of the overhaul mods. I also recommend turning on the console and noclipping through combat sections cause the combat sucks ass and nothing can fix it.
It's very real. It's in the section on dealing with difficult or controversial players.

Somewhat glad that White Knight Wolf got shoahed by paradox. Hopefully that discourages the devs from shoving in THE CHRISTCHURCH SHOOTER WAS A VAMPIRE BUY OUR GAME.

On the one hand it's really gauche to tell people not to play your tabletop game based on their real-life politics, but on the other hand if you play Deus Vult Paladin or 1488 Super Nazi in VtM (or Eclipse Phase) there's a 99% chance you're just going to be That Guy / a murderhobo because you're going to be surrounded by heresy and that's part of the fun of the setting. You should probably choose a different game.

Unofficial patch, pure edition for first playthrough. Then you can up the unofficial patch to the version that adds content or get the Clan Quest mod, which is pretty good.

The subtext is how they idiots define what constitutes Alt-Right and Nazi. Basically anyone to the right of chairman mao.

Your best bet for the most recent edition of Vampire that isn't a total trainwreck is 20th Anniversary Edition, which is admittedly massive but also has everything you could ever possibly need or want all in one book.

It's metaplot-neutral so you don't need to worry about setting confusion and is fairly mechanically solid by White Wolf standards, incorporating the best elements of the three previous editions in a "Greatest Hits" sort of way.

In my opinion, the First Edition softcover from 1991 is the best overall edition in terms of setting, theme, and style and while a little mechanically wonky, is still very serviceable and the most modular in terms of setting and theme. However it is out of print and I don't know if they have an official PDF on DTRPG yet or not. However, you can easily find a physical copy of 1E on Amazon or eBay for a fairly reasonable price.

So, my best bet for you would probably be V20.

Or, like smart people, swap to Requiem and stop giving a shit about VtM because it had a good run but the metaplot made everything worse.

EDIT:

Also V5 mechanically isn't that bad. It's got a few quirks and probably could have used more love, but it isn't complete shit. We aren't looking at Scion or Exalted levels of cheesy bullshit. The thing that most people bitch about is the change to Blood Potency, disciplines being rebalanced, and the changes to damage. When you consider though that V5 was likely in development hell for a decade before being converted into a template for a video game, then because what people wanted wasn't an MMO the company had to dig through and salvage what they could from the absolute mess that did to everything.

Vampire: The Requiem is arguably better from a mechanical standpoint and doesn't have most of the metaplot or other baggage from VtM, and there's a conversion guide you can pick up for free if you want to use VtM clans using Requiem rules.

I actually am in agreement with you on this. The metaplot ruined VTM in the end, which is why the only VTM editions I can truly stomach are 1E (which had no real metaplot) and V20 (which is explicitly metaplot-neutral) but I am inclined to agree that Requiem is better, the same goes for most of the New World of Darkness (or Chronicles of Darkness First Edition, as it's now called) in fact.

Fun fact, I started with Requiem first and only got into Masquerade because none of the White Wolf fans in my area liked Requiem, they were hardcore WW metaplot-purists and I eventually quit gaming with them after a while.

If you must have Masquerade, go for V20. However, if I were you, Vampire: The Requiem First Edition is a much better choice and probably cheaper too.

It's much cheaper. I'd still advise 2e of Requiem because the rules updates are more concise and the gameplay flows better.

@wrangled tard hit me up in PM's if you're interested in either V20 or VtR, I can shoot you a few links.

I also recommend turning on the console and noclipping
good god you must have this to defeat the most powerful enemy in the game.

Interior Doors.

If you walk into a door before it finishes opening you get stuck on it halfway open and cant get out. Requiring a restart to last save.

Seccondly the Items, weapons and ammunition Enemies drop Physically interact with the doors. So if you kill an NPC next to a door you have to go through and dont pick up the item? The door will collide with it if you try to go back the way you came. in some levels (the non haunted hotel) this can trap you in a room. Causing you to yet again, Revert to last save.

The unofficial patch fixes this I'm pretty sure. As is though, Bloodlines is notoriously buggy. It's almost part of its charm.

70-80% sure this will shit the bed. Literal "who" dev and already banging on about polyqueer pronouns whilst pushing pre-orders.
The other 20-30% wants this to do well.
What happened to Vampire games? Anyone remember the Legacy of Kain series? That was great, you ran around, killed people/vampire hunters, drank their blood, gained certain powers that you could use. It was simple. You are a monster, go kill humans and other monsters. What does being a demi-queer troon have to do with draining humans of their blood?

That's not a Vampire vampire game, that's the legacy of Kain series.

Because in reality they drain money and hope from their victims and work to Salt the earth and completely destroy the lives of anyone that they consider an enemy?

Really i think its actually rather accurate to make them blood sucking monsters.

I was so excited about this game, and this thread made me sad. :( I've been playing VTM since the mid 90's. It's how Mr. Nekro and I met, we still play it to this day. I play games to escape from political shit, not have it shoved in my face.

Taking a quick browse through the official discord server it certainly sets a tone for the game. It's run by some paradox employee larping as a vampire, bans any form of speculation on the nature of politics in the game and any concern arround there being pre-order packages before we even have gameplay. The moderators that aren't employees are exactly what you would expect, including one that complains about muh bigotry almost daily. I would provide screenshots but I got banned for my username. Oops. Link to the server if you're interested.
