Have Valve decided to go woke a decade after everyone else did?
No.

There are broadly two ways to look at this. "Valve is based" and "Valve was always woke".

The whole "Valve is based" thing has already talked about. But "Valve was always woke" goes to the various purges they've had over the years. Banning any "problematic" games, usually anime or sex games, until one goes viral in which case it's blamed on a "rogue employee" and restored. Most recent one I recal was some no-name indie game that was banned because the banner had an image of a woman from behind. There's also been various other woke decisions. Buying the devs who made Firewatch was one example.

disgusting

yeah I believe the whole thing is a nod to the oldschool refreshments animation, I like it. it's not pandering to that pornsick faggotry, they're just too young to get it

Gabe's political donations are public, he donated to Democrats. Valve was founded in Kirkland and is headquartered in Bellevue, Washington. They are very much "woke" if "woke" means "anywhere left of center", but they're not "woke" in the sense of "shoving leftist bullshit wherever possible". They just don't have to, and given the amount of edgy right wing shit you find on Steam Community, they're doing a pretty good job at not doing political purges like other left leaning corporations.

I guess it's because they're privately traded so they don't have to ruin everything for everyone to get money, and it's more beneficial for them to stay apolitical to make money. But if you're the type of Gamergate brained retard that refuses to use/play something because it's "woke", delete your Steam account now.

Right, I hate to be the bearer of bad news here, but the biggest "huh" regarding the specs isn't the GPU or the CPU here, it's that the only way of expandable storage seems to be via MicroSD cards. Maybe there has been some major advancements lately is MicroSD card technology but it seems like it's going to end up the biggest bottleneck and create an ungodly amount of issues with constant rewrites.

No idea if the Steam Deck or Switch has had major MicroSD card issues, but I'm sure we've all had a phone or tablet that just decided to corrupt the MicroSD card out of nowhere.

I mean don't get me wrong here, even if it ends up as being a slightly better Series S without a locked down OS it's still a pretty nifty console that would end up being the ultimate 'box under your TV for everything', and I am tempted to pick one up as a dedicated European Truck Simulator 2 console, but the lack of a SATA bay or an extra NVMe slot is strange.

Console sperging
Please let me query your autism here, I've heard talk of other handhelds having better specs but the steamdeck being propped out on name value. What are your thoughts on this? I've held a few in stores and they all seem clunky as hell compared t the switch. Speaking of which:

Switch is Nintendo. Nintendo fans are babies/families/Fanboys.
Will we ever excape the "owning a switch makes you a soyboy" mindset or should I just buy a truckload of funko pops while were at it? I just thought the versatility was cool man(:_(
Though now I see him in the controller itself.

The sticks are the eyes. The touchpads are the cheeks. The options button between them is the mouth. The bumpers are the eyebrows.
Personally, I see the discord logo and depending on how pedantic either company is with copyright, that might be at least partially intentional. Looks way too thick to be comfortable to hold however.
Same, he's cute AF. He reminds me of the Switch Doggo before the furfags took over.

Implying this shit wasn't made by a furry and/or redditor and that furies weren't part of the target audience when designing the mascot.
One of my favorite music group that broke up on my bday.
Why would you reveal your birthday on here....
if it's not like a Steam Deck where trying to install anything that isn't goyming OS with Steam shitware installed on top then it might be a good idea for (somewhat cheap, assuming it's gonna be like the Steam Deck) then I might buy one later, but still it's a shitty company that I'll never touch again and haven't touched in months.
Soyjack avatar with ace of spades, "goyming", recent posts about the sharty.

I'm sorry you need to be at least 18 to use this site.

What's the deal with the Steam Frame? It seems similar enough to the Quest 3 except it's going to be twice the price and there's a scowling tranny (with a riotgrrl sidecut) on the product page.
You don't have to be part of Meta's panopticon and the controllers won't be hot dogshit (I own the Quest 3 and the only supported controllers suck ass).

Is there any reason why SM's USB port wouldn't accept portable HDD?

They feel premium but from experience the quality is questionable. I bought 3 8bitdo controllers and two developed problems within a few months - one had an analog stick getting stuck and the other had one of the face button getting stuck and not registering inputs.

I think the problem is there is no decent alternative so all the retro game slop-tubers glaze their controllers up and down.
It becomes an even worse case scenario when collab controllers are in question. Good luck making fixes to controllers that are no longer in production.

I don't see why it wouldn't. You can also change out the existing nvme for a bigger capacity one so there is that I guess, though I think they are using the same annoying form factor as the steam deck.

Anyway, I have had a micro SD in my steam deck since launch with both roms/ISOs for emulators and games installed on it and so far had no issues.

I got one a few months ago. My main complaint is that the program they use to make presets will crash unless you run it as admin.

Has Valve said what the controller’s functionality will be outside of the Steam ecosystem? I have a lot of games on GOG for example and I’m curious on if they’ll work without issues.

I see they break that out in the output section and specifically say 4k120 for HDMI. HDMI 2.0 doesn't support DSC so they must be talking about a 4:2:0 signal.

edit:

Does anyone sell minipcs with dedicated gpus?
It's 2025 and we're still living with YUV slop? Seriously? We can't have off-the-shelf hardware with full range 10-bit RGB 4K@120 Hz?

I don't get what kind of niche it's targeting
It's targeting, generally, everyone. More than everything, Steam has been aggressively targeting Value, which is a huge metric for all gamers and one of the biggest "growing pains" of consoles is jumping between generations. You currently see this with Sony's split between PS4 and PS5 versions of games, Xbox's massive split between Series S and Series X, and Nintendo's split between Switch and Switch 2.

You also see this in the larger industry shift pushing towards shutting down digital libraries and instead pushing for "walled garden rentals" (Gamepass, PS+ Tiers) and a heavy reliance on re-releases and remasters that are fairly greedy and sometimes go so far as to lock you out the actual version you own.

PC Gaming, through Valve, does not have this problem. I'm able to play "Half-Life" in 2025 on any PC I can sign into, even though I bought a physical copy of it in 1998 in a fucking K-Mart that no longer exists. I don't need to jump though hoops, I don't need to fuck around with a remastered version, it's not online-only, it just works (TM).

Phil Spencer once said "The [Xbox One] Generation was the worst one to lose" because it let players invest in other company's ecosystems and become entrenched. "If I switch to xbox now, I can't play any of my PS4 games on it, and I'll have to have two subscriptions...etc" and I think he's correct but I also think someone at Valve agrees and realized the most entrenched video game ecosystem on the planet is Steam and by a hilariously large margin.

It's unclear how exactly it'll work, but the Steam Machine has a massive possibility to destroy the console competition - doubly so when Sony and Microsoft are both struggling massively right now, with sagging output and soaring prices. If it's reasonably priced and they've got some longevity plans (aka some of the components are modular and upgradable for a normal user) - it's going to look way better then the Playstation 6, Xbox whatever the fuck.

Sony has put the PS5 Pro at $699, the XBX has a $649 and $800 SKU, even the "value focused" Switch 2 is $450 + $80 per game. If they can come in around $600 and demonstrate value - it's going to be hard to beat.

Well for one I think a majority of PC users aren't going to like a small form factor PC they can't upgrade and is stuck with 2020 tier of hardware alongside a memory bottleneck. Likewise current gen console users won't really be tempted when it's basically a third party machine with no new Source/Source 2 games and is up to par with what they currently have regardless of price.

Even for the audience that's still on the PS4 or running a GTX setup and want to upgrade for XYZ reason, it's hard to see why they wouldn't just upgrade solely the GPU for a fraction of the machine's price or straight up get a PS5 Pro with 4x storage and 2x performance for the same price

Both the Quest 3 and Frame are subsidized in some manner.

Component-wise, it might be a little more expensive, however Meta can afford to sell it for cheaper since your data is worth so much more than game sales.

I hate how my Quest 2 always updates without my consent, breaking all the little mods I do, forcing me to wipe once in a blue moon. I absolutely dont regret buying, in many ways it's objectively better than even the HTC Vive. But dealing with the zucc (and now with Android being enshitified to no ends).

The way how everything was balanced was a net negative. 450 grams on the front, so you have to add 450 grams to the back. Adding cameras and thingies and your lightweight headset now weights 3 lbs. Having something lighter and more balanced is something even the Quest 3 doesn't offer.
