I also saw this, I don't know if this is true? They're claiming the ring-zero anticheat also forces you to reformat.
not really. it only forces you to reformat if you want to keep using the DMA card, you can still use your computer as normal without cheating.
there's a bunch of uninformed sperging about ring 0 anticheats that should stop propagating (although i'd love to see riot go up in flames)
- this isn't anything new if you've been following vanguard development, they've deployed a bunch of ways to try to catch DMA users, this is just a new detection vector that catches more people
- people need to understand that if riot wanted to steal your data, they could do so just as easily from ring-3, same with bricking your computer. running as admin on windows (or as service) is just as scary if your main concern is privacy and shit not breaking your PC; the reason for them having a kernel level anticheat isn't so they can snoop around your files and send the , it's to try to catch cheats that would be impossible to detect from userland.
- as for any possible backdoors for china or whatever schizo theories people have, this again has no reason to happen in the kernel and something like this wouldn't pass ms driver certification (therefore you wouldn't be able to load their driver on your PC)
- while riot games is seemingly full of retards and assorted minorities, as far as i know their vanguard team is very competent and it's mostly prominent ex cheat devs nabbed from UnknownCheats, people like
everdox and i think some secret.club people. these people know more about the windows kernel than the jeets at microsoft do nowadays. it isn't just a team of vibecoding retards.
- the odds of this occuring to actual legit players are basically 0 and even so it wouldn't fuck up your hardware, your windows install or anything else.
- the red screen of death thing looks like it's part of the game, it's not an actual bsod or anything. it's pretty obvious but some xitter retard was crying about it so i might as well mention it.
for those interested, here's a vgc dump with some info
and here's the thread discussing the new detection vector
i agree that kernel anticheats suck and i want to see more approaches similar to valve with vacnet (where the system is almost entirely serverside, opaque and while it appears to be weak it does a decent job at keeping legit players playing with eachother while pitting hackers against eachother), this requires a huge amount of money and incredibly specific talent though. there's a reason only valve really cares about this and everyone else is going all-in on kernel anticheats (ubisoft is hiring for this, EA already rolled out javelin, chinks have gameprotect, EAC & BE are still a thing etc.)
