At least the normies will never steal anime.

I hate "gamers" who only play shooters. I hate "Elder Scrolls fans" who only played Skyrim. Even though I don't like comics or superheroes I hate when people wear superhero merchandise or talk about how "nerdy" they are when they've probably only watched The Dark Knight or a Spider-Man movie.

I don't know what it is about normies that makes them have to cling to something to give themselves an identity. If it's not something "nerdy" they make an identity with whatever music they like like calling themselves a metal head when they have a Metallica shirt but probably don't even listen to metal music.

I miss the 80s/90s nerd stereotype a lot because it used to be a branding you'd earn by being really really into a particular field. There were woodworking nerds and music nerds and computer nerds and most of them would be more than happy to sperg out about anything in their field of interest if you had questions.
It was nice when it was just that.

I like it when fake nerd girls get upset when people try to determine if they really are a nerd or not... like any person passionate about anything would do to any other person claiming to be passionate about anything.

Lol this thread went to shit pretty fast.

If you want validation to the people who took the piss out of you for being a nerd, go look at their careers. 9 times out of 10 the people who rinsed you in school are struggling to hold down a stable career that pays well. Now they're working a shitty job wishing they had actually applied themselves to education rather than trying to get everyone to notice them.

The pokemon go fiasco was a chucklefest. "Hur hur so much nostalgia now I love Pokemon again cause it's cool rather than being nerdy autistic". People like that aren't going anywhere in life and you're best off laughing rather than proving how your nerdy bubble got infiltrated.

I was going to do a lolcow crossover by including a comic Andrew Dobson did where his bear persona is at a convention and observes an interaction between a young woman in a Black Widow cosplay and a stereotypical male nerd who quizzes her before dismissing the female as a "fake geek girl" but then I forgot he deleted his dA account :c

The more I read this thread, the more it does sound like some posters are trying to be gate keepers for whatever their dumb hobby is. As annoying as some of these "super geeky NERDS XD" are, it's a trend, and like every trend, it's going to go out of style, and if some people are really just doing for popularity sake, they are going to move on to the next trend when that arises. Whoever sticks with this stuff after the trend dies are the real nerds.

I'm into some pretty goofy shit myself if the Onizuka avatar wasn't a big hint already, but at the end of the day, this is really just a waiting game. Give it a few more years, and this whole nerd attire/culture trend will go the way of bell bottoms pants, pogs, the emo scene, and those fucking embarrassing Twilight vampire kids.

If I have one serious complaint about these people, it's that the Big Bang Theory really is just one of the worst fucking television shows made in the past 30 years. Anyone who willingly walks around with a Bazinga! t-shirt or quotes the show should be pushed screaming from a helicopter.

Pretty sure someone in the dobbo thread got an archive of his dA. Never give up on making things, especially when the things will make a cow scream on twitter for hours if not days.

I'm fine with people being a fan of something but it's just been getting incredibly out of hand in the last 5 or so years. There was always the "Pickle Reee" morons but there is just so many nowadays.

I can say I'm a fan of stupid shit but I'm not insane over it. Like if someone asked if I liked a certain show, "Yeah I'm a fan" not "HOLY FUCK YES I AM A HUUUUGE FAN!"

Also the beaten dead horse that is annoying catchphrases and tropes of a franchise get reaaaaally old fast. The joke that "stormtroopers can't aim" comes to mind.

I understand how you could be annoyed by them, but they would probably be cool people if you tried to hang out with them. There’s nothing preventing people who know more about Pokémon from having fun with others who just picked it up. If you happen to know more about Pokémon then they do, then that should be a catalyst towards making friends with the people who just started playing Pokémon GO, not something that separates you from them. Having the urge to roll your eyes whenever they say stuff like that is a pretty easy toll for making many new friends and social groups, especially given how large and widespread the Pokémon GO trend was.

This is the same with any other fandom or trend. Don’t expect everyone who shows interest in a fandom to stay for long or to want to absorb the same amount of knowledge as more established fans do. Just make friends over the shared interest and then get to know them by their other attributes.

Never get so lost in the state of your fandom that you start to judge other people who are interested in it solely by their knowledge or dedication to it. Don’t have the same mentality that incels do about women or “Chads”. If you gatekeep them from the fandom, you could also be gatekeeping yourself away from potential friends and social life.

On the topic of the nerdy themed weddings, this image was making the rounds around the anti-normie subreddits recently.

How it looks IRL:
fio9yddf75iy.jpg

Regarding the general topic of this thread, I recently encountered one of these normie "nerds" IRL, so it is fortuitously topical. My boss and I were discussing a business arrangement with these minimum wage security company employees, and when they inquired about my boss's previous line of work, he explains how he used to be a professor of nuclear science at the university. One of the security drones, this overweight bespectacled black guy, suddenly perked up and tried to make a jibe about how he hopes our office isn't contaminated by too many "rads", smugly adding that he's "kind of a nerd" when explaining to his coworkers that a "rad is the unit they use to measure radiation".

I instantly knew that he only knew this from playing Fallout, as no one who has actually had to sit through a radiation safety briefing measures exposure or dosage in rads, it's all done in grays and roentgens these days. The rads in Fallout are an intentionally anachronistic callback to the early days of the Atomic Age.

TBF when you bring up Vocaloid Miku should be the first thing that comes to mind as the software is the most popular to date thanks to Crypton. Even then I don't consider vocaloid to be a nerd thing even when it clashes with weeb shit. @Michel what do you think bud?
Only weebs care about vocaloid.
Also western vocaloid fans are people that I avoid interacting with because they're all terrible, like all weebs I guess.

This is an excellent perspective to have. At the same time, I can empathize with the people who feel like their hobby is being encroached upon by thots. It happened to the atheist community, then it happened to the comic book community, and when it happened to the video game communities, there was a push back against the thots. Yet anyone who pushed back against the encroaching thots was deemed a woman-hater. I can completely understand why folks are upset. There's a clear trend that is not without precedent.

this forum really needs new lolcows because fuck some of these threads have become embarrassing

i guess part of the problem with being a site revolving around mocking cringe is that the cringe can follow you

seriously though the kicking and screaming about normies appropriating ""geek culture"" is fucking embarrassing

Most featured threads aren't even about cows, but normies or terrorist organizations. Get back to making fun of autists so I can feel better about the years I wasted in special ed class you fucks.

Btw fuck Funko Pops for real. My mum got me a Rick Grimes one for my birthday a couple years ago and the stupid cunt won't stand up without tipping over because of his fat fucking head.

It's funny you dumb shit, some of us come here to laugh not get outraged at stupid shit.

Minor :powerlevel: & :autism: here but as a totally real gamer gurl i'm sure all you nerds care about my input on this topic

Someone mentioned earlier in this thread that middle class american kids become this way due to a lack of identity growing up. It seems to be a phenomenon affecting millennials, especially the older age-range (20s). I spent a lot of my youth attaching myself to various obscure fandoms and dropping them as soon as they became remotely popular (Naruto, Invader Zim, other insufferably autistic shit) because I was desperate for any kind of identity because of various things I was going through--but not desperate enough to be included in anything mainstream obviously. I agree that young people and I guess these 20-year-olds lack a core identity and have a deep desire to feel a sense of belonging. If I recall correctly, the same type of thing also drives young people to do shit like go and join ISIS. Except it's a lot easier to just collect a bunch of meaningless merchandise, watch some movies, and latch onto something that is immensely popular but still be able to claim the glorious victim status of "nerd".

So what, is the problem that middle class american lifestyle has become so decadent that people are so bored they are willing to make a shitty cartoon their entire identity and reason to exist (or in the case of tumblr--their gender identity), Maybe we need a mass starvation event or a yellowstone eruption and people will develop personalities and become interesting again. Or just people need to be bullied and experience hardships in order to overcome obstacles and have actual character development. But this is kind of difficult to do when we have a current culture of 'victimhood is a desired status' instead of being a survivor and making something of yourself.

I decided not to sperg about girls in video games since it's just another non-productive hobby that people attach themselves to.

There was this one girl in class who called herself a gamer. She once brought her Xbox to school the only game she has ever had was COD.

She's was also a huge Justin Bieber fan who would sing and hum "Baby" and" boyfriend "in class
