This is a trend with a lot of stores. My previously mentioned Barnes & Noble has a decent size geek stuff section, which to its credit has some decent stuff. But remember when Barnes and Noble was mostly books and only a few toys and trinkets? I think I do...
And like you said, the stuff ends up on clearance. These stores all seem to become super cluttered once the geek stuff takes over too. Somehow, Suncoast still exists nearby, and its insanely cluttered. I know Amazon is hurting B&M media stores, but is the geek crap really helping them? I can't tell if they are the thread these stores are hanging by, or choking the last bit of life out of them. It certainly looks like the latter from the outside.
To me it seems like out of touch business owners trying to fight lower sales while missing the point on why people aren't going to their stores anymore. For example with GameStop, they've gained a bad reputation over the past few years with numerous shitty business practices, mainly selling used/opened games as new, paying $20-30 for your $60 game only to resell it for $50-55, "preorder now", and poorly refurbed consoles. Geek Culture shit is only the newest thing GameStop has tried to boost sales. They've tried selling used DVDs, used iPods and cell phones, new tablets, and the local GameStop also sells Cricket Wireless phones (though I've never seen one person buy a phone there).

Furthermore they bought ThinkGeek (a online retailer of this crap), and the initial Xbox One announcement in 2013 was the writing on the wall for GameStop. It didn't help that their decision to quit selling NES, SNES, and Genesis games in around 2004 with newer "retro" systems following later on in favor of more dusty copies of Madden caused sales to go towards retro game stores instead, and when I was younger the local GameStop employees would tell you "Oh go to the game store in the local mall".

Posers read these because they think they are funny but these are SERIOUS problems for real nerds.

This shitty plastic garbage is all over the place. I went into a Five Below for cheap halloween candy to pass out to the neighborhood kids and over half the store was cringey, tacky, cheap "nerd" crap.

I went into a bookstore to buy a magazine and a book last week. Neither was in stock, but I'll be damned if a quarter of the store wasn't filled with retarded bullshit like Funko Pops, Unicornos, and tin signs of capeshit insignias. Fuck this shit.

i love iron guy. he's so strong, but like, also he's rich and can fly and is the fastest and he always knows the coolest things to say to ladies. and hge has like 100 lazer beams...but sometimes thats not enough so he builds a suit with 1000 lazer beams and sometimes THAT"S not enough so he builds one with like a million lazers. basically he makes more lazers until he wins and is the strongest...he rules man

I gotta also say that the funko craze just doesnt seem to end. It feels like each day the company gets new shows/media to make pops of that people buy up the nose for.

Heck, go to any big name con like sdcc and you'll find people waiting in line for the exclusives funko pop.

Some of them look pretty cool, but most of the time they just look sort of meh or are often rerelases of popular characters just in a different pose/accessories.

Didn't this whole thing take off around when BBT started?
I'd say it was 2007 era pop culture tbh.

A few more things that happened were the Wii bringing casuals into gaming (and "dividing" the console userbase), and the release of Team Fortress 2.

There’s a boobie streamer named “Amouranth” who does squats with lightsaber toys and the tips just roll in.
She does the most blatant nerd pandering there is.

I did come across her YouTube channel some time ago. I Remember one video she was showcasing the haul she got from hot topic. It was some invader zim merch She didn't even know what invader zim was.

I can agree though that Funko Pops are hideous. I only have one because it was gifted to me, otherwise, you couldn't pay me to buy one of these ugly fuckers.
:powerlevel: I only have a funko pops of Conan and Red Sonja, because their figurines or action figures can go for up to 200 dollars.

I just checked amazon, and conan figures are cheaper.
