To be honest, I do find it a bit wanky to say "there is no official translation because I don't speak the language and I cannot trust them to coNveY my viSioN". He probably knows for most languages he would have to pick a gender for his characters or else it sounds retarded. But he easily could find professional translators and discuss every single phrase with them to avoid any pronouns. Does he even speak Japanese on the level of a native?

Also, translations into other languages are usually not as pozzed as JP-EN translations are. EN translators are the ones inventing shit and giving people they/them pronouns.

KRIS IS A HE KRIS IS A HE KRIS IS A HE KRIS IS A HE

Is this the troon version of yelling "NIGGER" to release anger?

To put in my two cents, I get why Toby doesn't trust human translators for languages he doesn't know. Unless you have an ironclad system to doublecheck and triplecheck and quadruplecheck your lines, you don't know if your shit is being hijacked. I can put the gender retardation aside for a second. I understand that when you have something to say, you don't want it to get lost in translation turned into something completely different, just because your employee or your contractor wants to use your work as a soapbox. The JP->EN situation alone is enough to sour anyone. Not to mention that when you give certain people an inch, they'll take a mile.

However.

I don't believe he can speak Japanese at a native level. Not just because he's hiring people to help, but the time it takes to write the Japanese version (IIRC he won't release chapters until the JP version is done) indicates he's being way too precious about it. He cares too much about making sure characters have the right pronouns and not enough about who these characters are. If your so-called wild cards act like they come from a 90's sitcom, or you outsource your "vision" to people who write like it's a sitcom, then either your vision sucks, or you don't care as much about it as you think. You don't get to hype everything up and put ~spooky foreshadowing~ everywhere, then rugpull and make everything lame and gay, before people start getting tired. Or. They force you to change your vision anyway. Lmao. It's been over seven years, and you'd rather vaguepost and have dinner parties with your dev senpais than work on your dream game.

Yes, the tacos are as particular about their language as the watermelons are about their hair, or pizzapastas are about their cooking. But I think another reason they're upset is because they're tired of his aloof Japanese gamedev act. They see translations for Garten of Banban of all things. They look around and see translations for all these different games, but not this years-old demo they've likely paid for. They're obviously not impressed by this. They feel he doesn't give a shit. So I get that, too.

Basically the tacos are being unreasonable by not understanding Toby's ~cultural context.~ They are rabid morons for thinking everyone should cater to them when there are plenty of reasons not to. Yet Toby spent too much time jerking off. His act is defensive, but it's not impressive. You're acting like a pretentious dickhead while catering to an audience of rabid morons who insist an obvious teenage boy is a they/them. So now we have a perfect storm of autism.

The Japanese managed to do a fan translation of the game before it was officially localized, so I can't see why people won't do the same in Spanish. The Spanish do a bunch of fan translations for a bunch of other games, so there's zero excuses for this bullshit.
There are several fan translations projects so thats not the issue, they take issue in the lack of OFFICIAL localization in part due to Toby's autism of needing to be fluent in the language to make sure his vision and writing are being followed 1000%

And again: most just want to shitpost and make fun of Toby's jap LARP

Site changed with a youtube stream that will launch later today.
The stream ended up being a bad announcement for a watered down version of the mod that will be releasing later this year.

People were let down due to this being horrible progress for a mod that has been in development for two years now, here are some discord screenshots:

Cibles (who looks like this) has clarified that the mod (that isn't even the full release) will not be released for a few more months. :story:

If Toby's autism prevents some sub 70IQ brapzilian or beaner that can't even learn english from playing the game (that's the biggest excuse I've seen for shitting on Toby, this fanbase TOTALLY needs more retards), than thank fucking God for his autism.

When did typing formally and using proper grammar become equivalent to pretending to be Japanese? He’s been a big Touhou and Nintendo fan his whole life, so no shit he’ll take the chance to hang out with Zun and work with Nintendo IPs.

I already think that part of Deltarune is Toby telling his fans that they don't always get to decide what happens in a story, or what character's motivations/personalities are like, and they should accept that things just go that way just like real life because some stories don't end up the way you want them to, but it won't be the end of the world just because you can't escape unpleasant things.

So did every Latin American randomly decide to sperg the fuck out all at once, or is all this backlash really over a concert?
The spics have been silent about not having a Spanish translation for 11 years and no one said a thing about it.

The concert just dominoed into talking about how Toby Fox "dosen't give a fuck about the taco people". The sub-65 IQ brapzilians saw this and decided to follow the crowd and start complaining about how they don't have Spanish translation.

Everyone forgot about the concert and just started shitting on Toby. He released an official statement, but spics still got somehow offended and made posts how it felt like he just hates brown people.

Now corpos like the Spanish KFC xitter account jumping on the bangwagon on the hype. Which I hope marks the begging of this retarded trend dying down.

I want them to finally shut the fuck up about it.

I still maintain that Toby is playing every angle with character relationships because he's going to rugpull all of them in the end and have none of the characters end up together. The asspain of the fans will be incredible. That being said, Krusiechads will continue to win. Suselle cucks will forever be in the chair waiting for an inkling of anything similar to this.
Yeah one of the main themes of Deltarune is that we can’t control everything and that the things we can control are worth holding on to and fulfilling.

Deltarune development is already glacial why tf would people want Toby to waste even more time making translations for secondary languages that are going to get (presumably) half-decent fan translations anyway? Makes LATAM look even more retarded in my opinion.

I've been doing some thinking about the situation, and I'm wondering if part of the reason why Toby is apprehensive about translations into languages he doesn't personally speak is because of AI. In the indie scene, there are a lot of fan groups that will translate games (usually ones in Unity, Renpy, or any other engine where it's well-documented how exactly to decompile the game and modify it)- Russian and Chinese are the most common, but Spanish and other languages crop up from time to time too. The thing is, a lot of these groups will very heavily use AI for their translation, which is still far from perfect, especially translating things from English, in my experience. The devs I've talked to really don't like this (partially because they are morally opposed to AI,) but also because they fear the shoddy translations make their games come across as much worse, especially something very story and comedy driven like Deltarune, and they'd have no way of checking for themselves, since they can't read it. A lot of these groups don't ask for permission, but for the ones that do, the devs nearly always will stipulate that they make it absolutely clear that their translation is unofficial and not endorsed by the dev, just to distance themselves from any low quality AI-generated translations. Obviously, low quality human translations have and still do exist (I think they call those low quality translators "localizers," these days,) but AI has significantly increased the number and concentration of sloppy, bad-impression-giving translations in the indie scene.

My thoughts are that in addition to his desire to supervise the translation process to make sure his vision stays intact, he also would be concerned that if he outsourced a translation, his game might receive a crummy AI translation and he'd be none the wiser, since he couldn't read it for himself to ensure the finished translation is human-made.

Are there any statements made by Toby about translations back when Undertale came out? If his perspective changed since then, that'd definitely make it look more likely to me that the rise in AI translations have made him all the more protective of his writing
