Classic Star Trek used to have “politics” in the sense that it addressed philosophical issues relating to real life and usually didn’t take sides - or if it did, it at least respected the other side or presented its own side as an ideal that society should eventually strive for. “Politics” in a lot of modern media (including modern Star Trek) is more preachy, strawmanning the other side and outright condemning the audience for daring to disagree with them, while also presenting their own side as so obviously right that it doesn’t need to be backed up through any sort of reasoning.

You can also look at the issue of politics in games from the viewpoint of Papers Please vs Not Tonight where the former uses its dystopian communist society as a backdrop to explore the themes of making humane decisions while still acting as a cog in the system, and the latter game using its fantasy reality of Brexit The Way I Understand It to make you hate Brexit and the people who support it because they lichurly want you dead and you have no reason not to rebel against the man to the point where it's stupid that you even have the option not to rebel. "Do I let this woman and her child into the country to find refuge from the horrors of her war-torn country vs feeding my family tonight" vs "do i let rosa parks sit on the back of the bus vs getting my head blown off by a policeman"

Villains, assholes and * GULP * a-abusers get a pass because these people like them as characters. If they were to perceive them as actually EVIL they wouldn't be able to enjoy their media as much.

thinking about asgore/toriel/carol/rudy in their college years in the 2000s gives me the same feeling as seeing those episodes of the simpsons where they rewrite how homer and marge met for the 500th time and now they met in high school 20 years ago in the early 2000s instead of the 70s. god damn you toriel should wear bell bottoms and asgore needs a member's only jacket
