Last week, the internet was rocked with the announcements that popular online news outlets Buzzfeed and The Huffington Post would be laying off members of their respective teams. While some believe the layoffs come as the parent companies realize that their traditional models of building a massive audience and attracting digital advertisers are no longer acceptably profitable, others point to a rejection of clickbait headlines and patently false stories by the public as the key reason for falling revenue streams.

Recently, both outlets have come under fire for publishing ‘fake news’: On January 17th, Buzzfeed ran a damning story regarding former Trump attorney Michael Cohen lying to congress about a Trump-tower project in Moscow, only for Special counsel Robert Mueller’s regularly silent office to issue a statement categorically denying the accuracy of the Buzzfeed report. Following the now infamous events of the January 18th anti-abortion event March for Life, The Huffington Postran numerous articles attacking the Covington Catholic High School students for being racist, disrespectful, and bigots, and even in the face of exonerating video evidence, doubled down on their condemnation by continuing to denigrate the students based on their own false narratives.

Following the announcements of these layoffs, a multitude of journalists who had been laid off took to Twitter to announce their unemployment and promote their services. Users across the internet quickly began to respond to these announcements with the phrase ‘Learn to Code.’ This phrase is in reference to the derision and condescension from journalists who advised that coal miners facing the extinction of their livelihood should just accept it and ‘learn to code’ if they truly wanted to remain relevant in the economic landscape.

As more and more journalists were met with ‘learn to code’ in response to their lamentations, some began to grow aggrieved with the phrase:

Some even became convinced that the growing frequency of the use of the phrase was a 4chantrolling campaign, despite provided screenshots only showing that 4chan was celebrating the announcements:

Mere days after journalists took issue with the three word phrase, The Wrap media editor Jon Levine revealed that use of the phrase was soon to be classified as ‘abusive behavior’,

Another user replied to Levine with proof that one of their tweets containing the phrase had violated Twitter rules:

However, within hours Twitter had responded to this development with a spokesperson clarifying the specifics of the policy change to The Daily Beast reporter Max Tani:

Levine also issued an update to his original tweet:

Despite this clarification, many users feel that Twitter’s policy shift is hypocritical at best. Users cite the fact that tweets urging people to ‘fire on any of these red hat b****** when you see them’, comparing the Jewish people to termites, or directing the very same phrase of ‘Learn to Code’ at blue collar workers had no action taken against the tweets or the accounts posting them, while Twitter instantly sought to protect the litany of unemployed journalists against a three word piece of advice by taking direct action.

If this shit keeps up at some point 'getting your feelings hurt' is going to become a legitimate disability.
In the future job applications wont ask about your skills or work history, but will be a list of all the times you feel someone was mean to you

Offense. Offense.

SHRIEK SHRIEK SHRIEK SOMEONE SAID LEARN TO CODE TO ME IT IS AN OFFENSE IT IS TARGETED HARASSMENT.

Goddamn, the absolute state.

So, if I wanted to say, advertise my site on how to learn to code in Python, I could get banned?

The absolute madlads.

Somewhere along the line, the difference between criticism and plain old cusswords, was lost, or rather, equated the same. These people really do think being told "You are objectively lousy at your jobs and I don't wish to read your uniformed and provably wrong opinions stated as fact" is the same as someone just saying "Eat a shitburger dickface, and then die!" - they cannot resolve the fact that people don't worship them for any reason other than generic "hate" and, of course, jealousy!

Can Spirit Fingers be memed into the first new hate gesture of 2019? It can be a taunt to journalists about their former job or their future career.

The OK sign for white power is so Trump 2016.

Wow, I can’t believe Twitter is making me miss the hardcore SJW side of Tumblr and Facebook since at least those sites have more freedom of speech in comparison to Twitter anyway

What can't everyone just jump the ship and switch to VK? If the Russians are using, then I think it's good for everybody to use.

I dunno, that explanation doesn't work for why they routinely go to immediate abuse when people disagree with them. They know the difference between criticism and hate, they just pretend they don't.

on VK you just get censored according to what putins cronies want, as opposed to twitter where it is jack and his cronies
actually doesn't sound too bad tbh
I bet they're up front about it at least, unlike Jack-Jack.

When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty – to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.

Whats even more hilarious is that their jobs will be lost to automation before they can retire. Imagine being 50 and having to learn to code.

The team that created this literary AI was led by Hitoshi Matsubara, a professor at Future University Hakodate. His team acted as a guide for the AI, deciding things like the plot and gender of the characters. They also helped select prepared sentences, which the AI then used to autonomously “write” the book.

“So far, AI programs have often been used to solve problems that have answers, such as Go and shogi. In the future, I’d like to expand AI’s potential [so it resembles] human creativity,” Matsubara told the Yomiuri Shimbun.

It just didn't get ejected in the first eliminations, and it was still substantially human driven. That said, AIs writing hundreds of worthless clickbait articles with one author/programmer guiding them may already be happening.

I read this amazing piece of nonsense and imagined the rest of the article was going to be just as absurd, but it was surprisingly fair.

Twitter needs to die, and despite never making a plumb nickel it never will. All it does is give narcissists a sense of validation, and the only successful thing the company ever did is convince the majority of other corporations that the loudest, gayest, most narcissistic voices on Twitter were representative of their clientele.

A lot of sports journalism is written by AI, so I don't see why low-quality clickbait couldn't also be automated away eventually.

Best part was seeing people report the articles done a few years ago where those same journos told swathes of bluecollars to 'learn to code.'

It's obviously not going to amount to anything unless it becomes automated to punish anyone using the phrase, but it still tickles my funnies.

All one must do is simply acquire the knowledge to create machine instructions to operate a computing device as a new form of employment.

They're not going to learn code or any practical job because it doesn't appeal to their egos. They're not going to have vacuous dipshits liking and sharing their C++ code. Plus, y'know, it's work. And work should only be relegated to those blue-collar nobodies in MAGA COUNTRY fly-over states!

But okay, let's not ask them to do anything of the sort. Instead, may I make a humble suggestion. How about all of these thin-skinned "journalists" create a commune somewhere in the wilds of San Francisco. Do what the hippies did and they can all live together in one big house where they can jerk themselves off all fucking day until the landlord shows up and they can all go out likes Jonestown. That'll be one hell of a story!
