Fanfiction.net has a policy where, if a creator asks nicely (or not so nicely if they're feeling litigious), fan fics of their works are ineligible for being hosted on their website. Granted, it doesn't do anything if someone writes a fan fiction in private or hosts it somewhere else but since fanfiction.net does for fan fiction what Deviant Art does for fan art, it's a good way for creators to discourage others from making derivative works based on their own intellectual property.
Do you think that Tv Tropes work the same way? That if someone who owns an intellectual property, they could request TV Tropes from making a page on it? I want to get into creating something and releasing it independently and would rather not have spergs argue over it in their obsessive forums or edit pages.
I used to like TV Tropes when it was just fun and casual but now they've more or less become the very thing they used to hate the most, what they call "Serious Business". You're not even allowed to make a new trope page for a trope or piece of media unless you get it approved by the hive mind first.
Here's a fun fact about their forums: did you know that no property can have more than one thread? You have to discuss shows only in their own specific thread or they'll get super pissy about it. So let's say you had a highly specific question about a show so obscure, they don't even have a thread about it. On most forums, you would just make that question into its own thread, get a few responses, and then it'll die on its own. Having the question be its own thread title is eye-catching and guarantees someone will see it. But no, if the thread for the show doesn't already exist, you're expected to make a new thread to open all discussions about the show or, if the show already has a thread, post there and hope someone sees a question posted in a 1000+ mega thread.
