Get into a fledgling field, make one good product, and then slap your name on it and create endless sequels.

15 years later, you'll be able to use nostalgia to rip off all of those idiots. Worked for Chris Roberts AND Richard Garriott.

Edit: This isn't really fair to Lord British, because while Tabula Rasa sucked, it was technically a game, which is more than Roberts has at this point.

Agreed, I think Lord British got fucked by several circumstances, the over abundance of MMORPGs, evolution of computers vis-a-vis graphics/processing power etc., NC Soft whom he sued and won.

I have difficulty imagining that CR is so self unaware that he can't see he runs a large financial volcano with elements of a new religious movement, cult of personality, and Ponzi scheme built in. I can't shake the feeling that at some point in the next 2 years it's going to collapse and judging from the way they handle development (amateurishly), I question if other areas of the business are being handled in a similar fashion. When badly run businesses start to suffer cash flow problems they generally stop/stall payments to the 2 entities that should be paid no matter what (the tax man and employees). Such cases often lead to the disgruntled latter assisting the inquisitive former in finding various semi or downright illegal shortcuts. I foresee many sperg tears and even one or two torn sphincters.

May I remind you that Chris Roberts at the very least approved and signed off on the terrible Wing Commander film. He probably assumed that getting his name in the opening credits was worthwhile compensation for any trashfire.

I was actually exited for this and spent a pretty penny supporting it. Now I feel like a retard for not seeing it for the scam it was. I swear I'am never getting on the hype train for any game ever gain. Got hooked on the NMS shit as well. I just want a cool space game with seamless transition from space to planet.

Elite Dangerous has had planetary landings since January 2016 (albeit on atmosphereless planets only)...

And No Man's Sky basically works now. Both of those properties reached a releasable state in far less time than SC has been bumbling around.

That assumes this was a scam from the beginning, which I don't think we can do.

If crowd-funded gaming has taught me anything, it's that the publisher exclusively deals with the financial side for a damn good reason. Creative types are usually terrible with money and with setting boundaries. (Look at Tim Schafer's multiple crowd-funding failures for the best example). Is it fair to say most KickStarted projects to date have turned out to be disappointing or unremarkable? Because it feels that way to me. I can think of maybe three or four KS-funded games that ended up being great. Everything else has ended up some degree of disappointing... if it got finished at all.

i think that's because crowd-funding removes the crucial role of publisher, someone who forces deadlines and limits on the developer's decisions and who keeps them on task. Basically, I think Star Citizen is another example of what happens when the creatives cast off The Man's shackles to do things their way. No more suits telling them they can't add a new feature or spend more time making the game better! They're going to make the best space game ever with everything in it! And oops, when you set out to do that the game is never finished and there's no clear long-term (or even short-term) goal for the project.

And maybe once you've gotten yourself down in a hole like that you look around and decide to take advantage of the situation.

A Redditor made a weekly updated roadmap that's more useful than anything on the official site.

I mean... after a while it's like... who the fuck is still dumb enough to be feeding into this scam. Even if it started as a dumbass selling something he couldn't deliver because he was too dumb to realize it, at some point it switched over into scam mode.

Sunk cost fallacy. I know it's cliched but Star Citizen is the literal definition of it.

It switched over to scam within a matter of weeks. They quickly realized there was more money to be made in perpetual crowdfunding than in delivering a product. They might have had innocent intentions initially (I remain dubious on that point. Too many ties to Hollywood and shady Hollywood double dealing finance models to believe they are innocent creatives.) But any innocence was quickly lost. At this point they are laughing all the way to the bank. How quickly did they create the multiple nested corporations such that they themselves could never be held liable for anything, and any money crowdfunded was immediately laundered off to an unaccountable shell company? That was pretty early. Like Day 1. That’s when the scam began.

Sunk cost fallacy. I know it's cliched but Star Citizen is the literal definition of it.

Strange this hasn't been posted yet, Digital Foundry did a analysis video of the engine's tech and minimum system requirements to run as it currently stands. I have no stance regarding SC but I find the tech angle interesting.
