I haven't personally played it but Hello Games just keep adding content without asking for any money, so you can just jump in at any moment and it is not going to cost you extra further down the line.

As to when it is going to be fully completed, no idea as Hello Games doesn't have a public roadmap, they just announce new updates when they are ready to release. The ship building update was very significant and it basically mogged StarCitizen in that respect because it does the same without the poor performance and bugs of SC and without asking exorbitant amount of money for the jpeg of a ship that may or not be delivered in the next 5 years. Players can just create whatever ship they want in NMS if they have the in-game resources to do it.


It was bound to happen that another space game was going to offer a competing experience given how long SC has been stuck in development going nowhere. ( FFS it's still stuck in Alpha after over a decade)
