I have to say, the spat between Chris Roberts and Derek Smart is sort of like a vaporware autism-off. Pass the popcorn, someone.

Star Citizen will keep gouging those crowdfunds and bribing your way to victory, then it'll all go quiet for a bit, then they'll rush it out the door in a massive wodge of hype and it will be... totally mediocre.

I was just thinking about Star Citizen. It's so goddamn crazy that they roped AAA actors into doing mocap for Squadron 42, hell it's crazy that Roberts planned two games period.

Development of Star Citizen began in 2011[3] and was originally planned for a release in 2014, and again in 2016, there is as of 2017 no official release date, and the game is still in active development. Squadron 42 was originally announced for a late 2015 release, but was delayed. As of December 2017, there is no definite release date. :story:

This is going to be the FoodFight! of video gaming.

No definite release date, but you can still buy in game ships and cashola for thousands and thousands of pounds.

Hear that? That's the sound of Chris Roberts's ego swelling up like a carbon star in its terminal stage.

But then again, he always has been a bit of an egotist. Strike Commander was basically his attempt at making a cross between Top Gun and Mass Effect (yes, it was that ambitious in design) and even when it did come out, two years late, it was only really playable on top end 486's and early Pentiums (this was 1993). And yet, Strike Commander was a good game. But this is probably because he had Richard Garriott and the rest of the Origin brass making him wind his neck in.

If Star Citizen ever materialises, and may I remind everyone that I expect to have visible grey hairs before this happens, it will probably be good in spite of, rather than because of, Chris Roberts.

Oh no, no no. No no nonono nonono no. Your information is sadly out of date. You can still buy in game ships, cashola, and land for thousands and thousands of pounds. Now not only can you spend hundreds on a picture of a space ship, you can spend hundreds more on a picture of a house.

Yep. More feature creep to keep idiots tossing money at them.

I grew up with X-Wing, Wing Commander, and Freespace, so when I saw this first announced, I was interested. But I stuck to my rule of "No preordering unless it has a good, playable demo" and passed on it.

Glad I did. This entire thing is a total scam.

So whatever happened to the companion game to Star Citizen, Squadron 42? Did they put it on hold since it doesn't sell $200 parcels of "land" and $1,000 "ships" like the main game does? At least there's regular updates for Star Citizen proper.

One major problem, according to the the court documents, is Cloud Imperium Games separating the single-player story, Squadron 42, into a standalone game. This was done "without permission", Crytek said.

"Section 2.1.2 of the GLA contained a promise by Defendants to use CryEngine for the development of only one video game," said the court documents. "During the negotiation of the terms of the GLA, Crytek made it clear that the game license would not cover anything more."

RIP Squadron 42.

Not like Star Citizen will ever release anyways.

The 3.0 Alpha is coming out soon (IIRC it already is out), which the article compares to Steam Early Access which should tell you the level of quality and polish.

When are they going to admit that Roberts is just a poor imitation of Molyneux these days?

I had forgot about Star Citizen until I saw it in the news the other day for selling players a fleet of ships for $27,000, with the catch that you aren't even allowed to look at the screen to purchase the ships until you've spent at least $1,000 on other in-game purchases.

The funds keep coming in for the most expensive Steam Early Access game in history. I bet Chris Roberts will get to be an IRL star citizen (like his former coworker Richard Garriot) using all that sweet development money before anyone gets to play the real game.

Unsure of space flight just yet but he sure seems to be enjoying his life.

Man if you're gonna spend thousands of dollars on model vehicles to appease your autism, at least go for ones that actually exist. Hell, even virtual ones that have a >1.0 release out.

Don't back a horse that might show up to the race some day.
Something about fools and easy money extraction springs to mind. It's a shame - I actually wanted there to be a bit of decent competition in the space sim/dogfighting game arena, but I remain utterly unconvinced that star star citizen is actually going to happen (i.e. actual public release of a post-rc version) within this decade, if ever.
