Even if starship isn't fully reusable or scaled down, it is still a gigantic achievement:
  • At least 100 tons to LEO rn, maybe 200+ in the future
  • Engines were made extremely simple overall
  • Large assembly line production in a single place, reminder the Saturn 5 had a few dozen suppliers and it all had to be shipped separately from bumfuck Alabama to Florida each flight, the fucking production facility is right there like in KSP for fucks sake and it's all welded stainless steel, they could have 50 rockets partially built already if they want to, just install the tanks, wiring and the engines and it's good to go
  • Gigantic, shuttle like cargo area, they can launch or recover whatever outsized cargo you can think of with the starship part, that is gigantic specially for military applications, heck I can even see cheap Smithsonian museum missions where orbital artifacts are returned home instead of letting them be destroyed
  • If inflight refueling is proven, there's no reason not to send entire truckloads of crap to the moon and mars immediately
If I was musk I'd go even further and put a skeletonized starship with a NERVA just to rub salt in the wound of NASA and finally make their nuclear space tugboat they dreamed of in the 70s until congress killed the space shuttle by gutting of it all but the plane itself.

Yes, tons of drama during launch. They did one orbit instead of six, just did the re-entry burn so it's coming back one way or the other now. Pretty much everything worked out, but it was tense. No explanation of why only 1 full orbit but I expect it's due to that shutdown. They'll probably explain that later on.
Just got to the part where they didn't commit to orbit. So reading what you guys have said, I think it probably was a fuel issue.

In a world of grand spectacles, that would just be cover for Elon redirecting the craft for a catch landing back at home. (I can dream)

I could be wrong, shop is noisy today, but I think they said re-entry will be after 2 full orbits.

Plasma's starting to build

Its a nice dream, but I don't think they would try something like that on the fly.
Those things are planned ahead of time, just without us knowing.

Not this time though, but if he wanted amazing PR he would next time.

This had the "engines fail"...."no orbit sorry"...."we made a plan for an orbit"... "we are on our way home!"
Is a movie plotline

I really don't want them to risk a crash into the tower, especially since there's still only one. I don't know why they haven't finished a 2nd one by now as a backup because it this one goes up.. Look at what happened with New Glenn.

It was truly amazing they did the 3 so early and they all worked.

Elon is such a level 99 turbo autist, but its really hard to not be impressed with how he manages to make shit like this real. People laughed at him when he started SpaceX.
He’s good at one thing and that is going into stale markets dick first and disrupting them. Space was dominated by MIC aerospace companies that only really did spaceflight as a side project to building ICBMs.

Musk now basically built the space shuttle but good in half the time.

He's only mecha Hitler because they trooned his son out.
If he was still a reddit tier progressive, he'd be God on earth right now.

Fact that they couldn't control themselves and made a whole bunch of silicon valley trillionaires and geniuses overnight fascists because they went personally after their families will be remembered in history for centuries as the most retarded political move ever accomplished.

Splashdown in about 5 minutes. They've worked on the heat shield, it looking really nice.
I always thought the landing and heat shields would be the hardest parts, not the engines that keep acting up still. The progress on the entry over time is really amazing.

Let's see if they can soft land this again.

Nice they have a recovery crew ready off Hawaii.

Nope it kaboomed on impact, but still unreal mission

18 years to the day Falcon 1 first made orbit.
