We've never seen Ezekiel and Ishmael since they left class to pray for their souls.
I was just thinking about those guys the other day. Back in my day, there was always one token Jehovah's Witness kid in the class that would do this all the time. Usually it was for birthday parties.
But sometimes it was for history classes too. I remember one having to leave when the teacher showed Ben and Me in class.
Nobody liked these kids.
I don't know if the Jehovah's Witness cult is so prominent anymore.

Fuzzy bunny was Jewish and Troy McClure was pure 1971 in that film. Just wish we saw “Lead paint , delicious but deadly”.

I know this is going to piss off some of the other people, but frankly I fucking hated that episode. Besides the whole "explanation for the sake of explanation" shit, it tries to do the whole cynical worldview thing that the series has generally done well (especially Homer's Enemy). Problem is, whereas past episodes say "Yeah, youpeople suffer, but so do we, so at least we're suffering together", there's an air of elitism to HOMR; it tries to say a "profound" message about intelligent people not finding happiness, but without even going into how self-defeating and backwards such a message is (sorry to be a moralfag, but that's just how I see it), all I get out of it is Al Jean (who wrote the episode) thinks he and his douchebag Hollywood elite are smarter and better than the "uneducated" riff-raff.

Frankly, it should've been a warning to viewers of the show's abandonment of speaking for the people for the sake of sucking off the liberal elite, and the fact that it won an Emmy just proves it, considering there were other nominees in the same category I feel deserved it more. I have other nitpicks about the episode, but I'm already inviting "Autistic" and "Mad at the Internet" reactions just by saying this, so I'll just say my piece and tell you this: HOMR is overrated dogshit and, to me at least, a sign that the episodes under Al Jean's leadership would be no better than what Mike Scully did, something that's very evident just looking up opinions online.

There's actually a Simpsons comic from the mid-90s (early Simpsons comics were actually surprisingly decent) that has a very similar plot to HOMR but handles the idea of Homer suddenly becoming smart way better.

Since someone quoted that take on HOMR it I'm gonna bring it up.

I actually came away from HOMR with a somewhat different takeaway than "You can't be happy if you're smart."
What I got from the episode is "Springfield is full of absolute dumbasses who are insanely hostile to anyone remotely smarter than them."

I mean, look at almost every "smart" character. Comicbook Guy, Lisa, Professor Frink, etc... almost all are portrayed as friendless outcasts. Springfield is full of people who aren't smart and hate anyone who is.

I disagree and here's my take character by character

Comic book guy - People don't hate him because he's smart they hate him because he's an anti social asshole. In pretty much every one of his appearances he's portrayed as a sarcastic jerk

Lisa - Again most people who dislike her is because she's a smarmy know it all who thinks she's morally superior to everyone else. This in and of itself is somewhat of a retcon as in seasons 1-2 she's shown to be a much more typical little girl with a small circle of friends many of which never show up in the series again.

Professor Frink - No one is actually ever shown to dislike Frink because of his intelligence. The friendless recluse thing is somewhat true but I've always viewed Frink as someone so obsessed with his work and scientific pursuits he has little use or time for socializing.

Fair points. And I miss the first few seasons of thr Simpsons because everything felt more grounded in reality as to how a character would act. Bart and Lisa acted more like actual kids.

Remember when Lisa tricked Bart that it was a snow day so that he would run outside in his pajamas and people made fun of him? Remember when Lisa made fun of Bart for being fat? Remember when Lisa would join in on Bart's prank calls to Moe?

Lisa was a lot more interesting when she acted like an actual 8 year old who just happens to be a little smart instead of a mouthpiece for the writer's political opinions.

remember when lisa told that one bitch to stop trying to be an adult and to act her age? i think it was the grease episode.

To me, it seems like Lisa suddenly became friendless in Summer of 4'2". When that one aired and she suddenly had no friends, I remember thinking, "what happened to Janey and all her other friends?"

To be fair maybe they stopped hanging out with her after she became a massive know it all asshole. That tends to happen in real life too.

To me, it brings up the question, "What happened to Allison?" Allison referring to the character Winona Ryder guest starred as in Lisa's Rival, who was portrayed as Lisa's intellectual equal, even being bullied for it. But in later appearances, she more or less takes the same fair weather friend role as Janey. Obviously, this is because she was created for a one-off celebrity appearance (after all, this was still in the Golden Age, where celebrities were given original characters to voice, rather than playing themselves to be lionized like what Zombie Simpsons does), but it does beg the question of why they keep her around as a minor character rather than memory-holing her like most of the other celeb-voiced characters.

You know what is getting tiring? How The Simpsons suppoaedly predicted God knows how many events lately.
Trump's election, the Capitol invasion, even an explosion in fucking Madrid this week has been "predicted" by the show somehow.

And every week there is some crappy article that begins with "Did The Simpsons predict (insert event here)?"

Indeed, "the Simpsons predicted it" had turned into a new cliche.

Then when the Simpsons did a parody of 24, we could said then "South Park did it" because they released their parody of 24 before the Simpsons. :smug:

This sadly puts an end to the theory that when some of the more prominent voice actors die the show will finally end.
