Before anyone jumps in with "The Japanese don't think this is racist, so it's totally okay" I'd like to point out that the Japanese have a different history and relationship with racism than Americans do. The racism in this impacts Asians in the West because we have to live with the stereotypes and yellow fever this kind of unthinking appropriation perpetuates, they don't (except for the tourists who come along to bathe in the culture and OMG KAWAII and all that). Harajuku is only one facet of an incredibly complex culture and the fact that Gwen Stefani doesn't recognize this after supposedly 'appreciating' the culture for over a decade just makes me embarrassed for her. But of course she doesn't care, because she's never had to.
