I don't have a problem at all with people bashing Hollywood for being a bloated eunuch that has an almost pathological fear of making interesting stories about non-Anglos. But what bugs me about the likes of The Mary Sue is their complete denial of their own role in helping cause this outcome by simultaneously making everything about identity politics and responding to any real or imagined slight to their pet causes -- such as casting Christian Bale or Russel Crowe in a Biblical epic -- like they're fucking jihadis.

They've actively made things worse, and have shown no signs of stopping.

Well, for many people, they think this kind of conversation about representation is new hot shit thanks to SJWs, but as you say it has been something present for many years. I will not be surprised if that is the case with the Mary Sue, and given the SJW rethoric of "never my fault" it would be not sorprising that is the reason why is getting worse than better.

They even go one step further than taking things out of context and deliberately construct a completely different one to push their narrative. So a sexist villain might be written up in an article all but saying he's the main character. If this level of accuracy was applied to other games:

Final Fantasy 7 is about stabbing a flower girl through the heart.
Gone Home is about breaking and entering to vandalize a house.
Dark souls is a fire-and-brimstone depiction of hell, in which you die over and over but your body regenerates, meaning you will suffer for eternity.
Minecraft is an animal cruelty simulator.

As a hockey fan I do think it might be enjoyable to see players from the women's league, where hitting is illegal, prove they're every bit as good as men in the best league on earth.
