Here are some quick hits regarding Magic the Gathering:
...
- Throne of Edraine, the next expansion, art leaked. The art itself looks fairly cool and the plane is going to be “fairy tale based.” Obviously we need to have POC and strong female characters in the art and the pandering game is staying strong. Women in armor, female slay qweens and emasculated men abound.
This point's really grasping at straws.

Maybe you’re right. Like I said, some of the art looks really cool. There’s that one piece where the knight is sleeping and the castle is behind him and it’s framed in the planeswalker logo and it look so awesome.

Not mentioned here though is that I also heard the judges will now have to pay actual money as membership dues in order to continue judging. That's insane.

Yes apparently there are tiers tied to judge level at $100, $200 and $400.

Edit: Payment is annual and go towards “staff” so presumably to Tim Shields and maybe upkeep on judge resources.

Is it weird this thread is part of the reason I want to start playing again?

Probably should just stick to commander. FNM at the local game shop, in my experience, is full of try-hards with netdecks.

The M:tG that I miss was when we just all entirely ignored charting at the hospital to fight each other with goblins. Commander does somewhat recreate that experience.

Or just build a deck that fucks up the meta decks / learn how to beat each of them. I've seen this kid at my local FNM running the janky infinite combo and get people with Mistcutter Hydra on a few occasions, in Modern. Mind you it was because they had no idea what his plan was he just kinda would get the drop on you if you weren't aware of what he was up to. It reminded me a bit of the Amulet Titan deck but just a very budget version of it.

All else fails do the closest you can to a burn deck and you'll probably go 2-2 at least.

I think the problem you have @eternal dog mongler is you might have had the wrong expectation of what FNM is. It's pretty much casual training for bigger tournaments/trying out ideas and such, which is why you tend to see a lot of the netdecks and a bit of try-hards. Thing is, least at my store, most of those guys/gals will be more than willing to give you advice about stuff after the match is over. You're probably going to lose, and lose a lot but it's pretty easy to tell who'll be helpful and who's a prick.

Now, if you don't have the cards you want because they are pricey and stuff, find a place you like the vibe of and make a few friends. Most the other players where I'm from will loan you stuff if you ask for the night or whatever as well. Just don't be rough with their cards and stuff.

I might just have a nice LGS though, I only really play Modern, a tiny bit of Legacy when there is a chance, and Limited so I'm probably not much help for Standard stuff.

There is a MTG thread in games a bit more devoted to this type of talk I'd direct both of you to as well.

When I used to go tin FNM my favorite thing got to do was to play straight jank decks and watch the kids playing $600 decks rage. I remember there was an interesting combo during M15 with that Helm artifact and enchantments that would wreck the non-control deck meta. Hexproof decks are always interesting and there was a cool, cheap mono blue deck that did fairly well during Khans.

Sure I lost a lot, but I always managed to beat one person with a finely tuned net deck. And for me, just winning that one game made it worth it.

Get creative. I also knew a group of kids who used to write down what everyone was playing and the next week they’d create a deck specifically designed to take down the majority. They weren’t too expensive either.

I have no problem with net-decking but it’s literally the least interesting way to play the game.

Do people still complain about netdecking and the meta? It’s always going to be a huge part of playing competitively and one of the reasons I’ve stopped playing competitive formats, if not the game for the most part.

Net decking is a huge part of any tcg, for the better part of about a year yugioh was dominated by CCCC or its proper name cookie cutter chaos control and the only variation you would see is people using either one spirit reaper or two spirit reaper. Now with magic on a seemingly monthly release schedule it’s meta is gonna change as fast as you can blink.
Another example is the final fantasy tcg, it doesn’t have meta deck but element combos. The top decks right now are either wind / water combo or lightning/ earth combo.

Exactly, it’s always been a part of TCGs and a reason you can have cards on the side.

Looks like Owen Turtenwald is back with an apology and now he streams Hearthstone.
the article said:
In his statement, Turtenwald never addresses what kind of things he did or is accused of doing, instead choosing to vaguely describe them as “disrespectful” or “terrible mistakes.” He also seems to try and shift some of the blame for his actions onto his use of alcohol rather than taking full responsibility. “I believed because alcohol was involved [my actions were] harmless,” he said, “and that is absolutely false.”
Yeah he's totally not taking responsibility for his actions by saying that he took responsibility for his actions.
article again said:
Hipsters of the Coast has reached out to Owen Turtenwald multiple times for comment. He hasn’t returned our messages.
I probably wouldn't either, what a fucking rag.

lmao, I just noticed these:

Insider trading is a pretty serious accusation, I hope they have some kind of receipts should the need arise.

It's a pretty unintelligible accusation since it isn't even publicly traded. It's a wholly owned subsidiary of Hasbro (which is publicly traded).

They are not talking bout stocks, they are talking about cardboard.

Wait, you mean? Fuck that's autistic shit to care about.

Stuff like retailers of singles knowing a card is going to get banned so they can try to offload them ahead of time. It's silly but there is a whole lot of money tied up in the secondary market of the game. Higher end cards are probably used for money laundering and such from the rumors I've heard, kinda like art collecting but smaller.
