I will maintain that the Kaladesh setting is the stupidest of the sets I've been going through (I'm up to Outlaws of Thunder Junction) and looking at cards and how the game has changed. An India-themed setting could be really cool (in terms of mythology, lore, etc.) but it just comes off as the most saccharine, milquetoast pandering expansion just from reading flavor text/looking at card art.
Thunder Junction IS the dumbest setting of all time and I'm including SpongeBob Squarepants.

But does anyone remember the complaining tumblr post that Kaladesh wasn't Indian enough?

Having gone through Thunder Junction (again, just looking at the art/flavor text), while the 'established characters cosplaying' is kinda silly, mechanically it seems like a fun set and I do have a soft spot for Westerns. But I'm curious why you hold that opinion, as I'm interested in hearing from people who are more invested in Magic.

It is as they say: it is never enough with these people.

I've got nothing against the mechanics. Spree is actually one of the greatest innovations in the game since Jumpstart IMO.

It's not that I mind the idea of a Western themed set - but 1. no guns. Which would be like doing a western themed set and not having any horses. And their gun knockoffs are stupid. I wouldn't have even minded some fantasy styled steampunk guns or something.

2. The whole setting just makes no sense. The omenpaths allowing for free travel through planes have just opened but this uninhabited world happens to have a ton of infrastructure in it like rail lines? Does no one have any idea how long it takes to construct rail lines?

And then they want to do "no natives" to avoid colonial implications. (but there are native plant people? this is supposed to be incongruent?)

SFDebris once said: "thinking should never be the enemy. The moment you say 'just turn your brain off' you've failed." That's literally Thunder Junction - the more you think about it, the worse it gets. Why couldn't it have been a previously inhabited plane (explaining things like rail lines) which was wiped out and now people discovering and settling the place? Loot - a freakin' furby - is supposed to be some map of the multiverse which just got formed like a year ago and he's stuck inside a vault on this place? Just... how? How did he get made, how did he get stuck inside, how did Jace or anyone else find out about him?

It's like Star Wars episode 2 (attack of the clones) - if you made the clone army for the republic to use in your little war, why did you delete the location of said clone army from the main library? That would be like if I ordered a gun for my wife (for her safety) but I didn't tell her about it, the store required her or me to go pick it up, but I deleted and hid all records and receipts of it from her. Unless the story in Thunder Junction had some major twist and revelation (which I've not seen from summations), it literally only work as a story from the audience's/writer's perspective. As soon as you attempt to perform any Sally-Anne test on it, the thing falls apart.

But then I hate the Omenpaths too. You think the Phyrexian invasion would have explained to the multiverse that people may want to be careful about taking strange diseases and plants/animals to other environments where they don't belong. But we can't have any restrictions or challenges for our writers now, that might require them to think and we don't do that at WOTC. The purpose of a multiverse is to keep things separated and contained for a variety of reasons, but every writer (looking at you DC) ends up getting hooked on the crossover appeal and ultimately ends up blowing up the walls of the multiverse. So now the "planes" may as well just be different cities on a continent with the omenpaths the equivalent of interstates and then you end up right back at the problems of a snarled continuity that a multiverse was supposed to fix in the first place.

I did notice that there seemed to be a lot of leaning towards lassos as opposed to firearms that kinda came off to me like Spider-Man FOX Kids levels of banality, but there were a number of cards that featured some sort of shoot-y weapon (Deadeye Duelist I think) that stood out for me. Were they not steampunk guns?

There was that and also a conscious effort to have sheriffs or deputies or whatever. It seems like that would be a classic faction to include -- outlaws 'megatype' tribal (which includes rogues/warlocks/mercenaries) paired up against, I dunno, a lawbringers faction (maybe deputies/knights/wizards, with mercenaries being a shared tribal type for both.)

I dunno why they're avoidant about a fantasy police force or equivalents but okay with it in others (the Gatewatch or whatever the Planeswalker Police group that Jace headed was.)
The rest of what you wrote? Yeah, that sounds pretty stupid and as I said, I haven't done a deep dive into the lore. I just thought that this was like an alternate reality or some of the planeswalkers like Oko were thrown to this place after the Phyrexia storyline.

EDIT: Also, I haven't seen this Loot character yet aside from some very vague referencing. Figured it was coming in Bloomburrow, which seems to be the Beatrix Potter expansion. Getting strong Scrappy Doo/forcing a meme vibes.

Worse. They're some kind of "spell slingers" that are shaped like the Halo sword.

Even the closest thing they had to guns were just badly made crossbows.

It was "theme park" Western. Except I've been to places like Guntown Mountain and they put more work into their recreation. This was like the theme park western of the disney tv show western. Without any thought or "cultural consultants" (how about some historians?) giving them input into how and why things were the way they were in the time of the cowboys.

2020 and BLM happened. ACAB took off as a meme in the blue regions of the country.

Yeah he literally exists.

In one of the silliest examples of how the woke hate feminism, Chandra has sadly undergone a double mastectomy in her latest artwork. It's actually to such a silly degree I thought it was fake at first.

First, some examples of on-card official artwork:

1737355860608.png 1737355884534.png

Nothing crazy but not flat. Just your average fantasy woman cloaked in flame and steampunkish attire. She became a popular character in the limited appeal the Magic lore has and was perfectly fit into the Magic setting. Even some of her most recent art, from the most currently released set, she has distinct curves.

1737356020907.png

Again this is official art printed and sold in sets. But man oh man, with the next set Aether Drift they straight CHOPPED those suckers off. I'm not advocating they go full the Stacked Library on us (though I wouldn't complain, I've been advocating for an Un-Rated set for over a decade now) but this is brutal.

1737358083785.png

It's like negative curve in order to make up for the sin of allowing her to appear feminine at all. I mean, look at this booster!

1737358993749.png

Or this!

1737358653899.png

Oh wait, that's not Chandra Nalaar, that's Carrot Top! Maybe the call was to force Chandra into looking like Carrot Top for a netflix adapation. Finally, I leave you with some 4chan spergs deep-diving the possibility of the art getting redrawn to remove offensive female features which I have a hard time doubting.

Every time I see them mangle my girl like this I want to paste 'ole Steve's drawing...
1737425512720.png

BTW in my search for this, I came across:
Nowadays, when this art is rarely brought up, it seems this narrative has only continued. Unsurprising given the current political landscape, but frustrating nonetheless. Men’s idea of lesbianism is endlessly defended by “transbians” and even the occasional cis woman. It is astounding to me that anyone can see this image and think of it as anything other than a man’s ridiculous fantasies, but whatever.

Fortunately, it seems as though Wizards is on the same page. Steve’s contributions have dwindled further and further over the years, to the point of having almost no pieces created for Magic in the past few. And when he is commissioned, it is rarely for a card featuring a woman. It looks like the time for artists like Steve Argyle, for Magic at least, is coming to a close, and I’m very happy to see it.

Want to take a guess at who wrote it?

Doubt they'd be looking into moving to Boston if Hasbro was run by Republicans. Hasbro just needs to cut costs and saying fuck you to a bunch of whiny bitches is just one way to cut costs. If your little org can't survive on it's own than it has no right to exist in the first place. If people cared they'd help fund it.

I really have no interest in anything modern Magic related, but I will always have a nostalgia for the really old stuff. I don't understand the thought process that leads to Aether Drift, I can understand Universes Beyond but that racing set shit is awful.

Part 3: Its not your flag
The troons and pride crowd probably don't buy shit. I've seen a lot of them in random stores telling people to not buy official products because they're too expensive or they don't like the company even if the company bends over backwards for them. Maybe this is the benefit of Universes Beyond that it brought in a massive normie crowd that just wants to buy a handful of Lord of the Rings or Marvel, and doesn't want to deal with the disgusting pride crap at an FNM. Now Wizards can just say fuck it and sell their shit in a Walmart where randoms will buy it instead of always worrying about what some tiny retarded demographic thinks.

What is the equivalent word for physiognomy but for Internet avatars?'

You really can tell a lot about some people just by looking at what image they choose to represent themselves with, weird how that works.
Physiognomy would still fit. Iconography would fit. You could coin iconognomy if you wanted to.

That is utter nonsense, what you are experiencing is confirmation bias and are simply too stupid to understand it.
What you are experiencing is self-doubt and cope. Relax, because your iconography (at the time of writing) merely says, "I nerd out to shit like the Lord of the Rings"; it doesn't say anything more embarrassing than that.

Iconography doesn't work because its more of a study of the qualities of the image itself.
Iconognomy
I like that. I'm more focused on what the icon tells us about the person who picked it. This expresses that much better.

That is utter nonsense, what you are experiencing is confirmation bias and are simply too stupid to understand it.
Yeah you're probably right. I should ignore the pattern seeking parts of my brain that are a part of my genetic legacy. I should ignore my lizard-brain that has been honed to keep me alive. When it goes "This seems weird, I don't like this." I should ignore it because that's just my internalized biases. I don't even have a reason for why I feel weird! Its definitely not because of the sum total of all the microevidence that my subconscious mind has accumulated and distilled into an uneasy "gut" feeling.

I definitely couldn't intuitively tell what your post history looked like before I even looked at it, just from this single chance encounter in this thread I've never seen you in before this point. Nope. Definitely just confirmation bias.

A US former VML player raised $13k in a GoFundMe to try to apply for Asylum in Canada, but was denied:

This "Phoebe" looking very similar to Chris-chan probably didn't help either.

And a WotC staff member is trying to shill another troon's GoFundMe campaign, because of a botched bottom surgery:

1737945549065.jpeg

Another WotC staff member shills for someone begging for HRT money:

1737945729169.jpeg

And a former VML judge resorts to begging for sushi money:

1737945586716.webp 1737945600233.webp 1737945616750.webp

The timing of these beggings aligning with the shutdown of the VML is definitely not coincidental... :cunningpepe:

So they're literally grifting tugboat money off of each other now? I can't imagine in good conscience giving money to some internet rando, much less a tranny for "muh drumf is persecuting ME SPECIFICALLY gibs money 4 canada trip plox"
