I've been reading this thread for a while and I noticed a pattern of a few people who go on about their rather obscure system and how it's perfect and gives them so much control only for weeks or months later they discuss that they had to drop the obscure system because it was too time consuming to fix and keep running.
For me, arch is a decent middle ground where I can control my system as much as I want while still keeping it easy to maintain. I haven't had to reinstall my OS even once in two years. Maybe one day I'll have a practical reason to get rid of systemd and I'll switch to something more autistic.

I would still be running Void, but they kicked the lead developer out and it turned to shit.

If there was decent driver support in bsd, I would probably be running that.

Fuck, I miss Solaris.

So, you're not wrong.

I've been resisting the urge to remind them that I had recommended Mint to them way back when.

It's literally the closest we have to a It Just Works distro

I'm actually curious to see the Wayland implementation they're coming out with, because knowing their design philosophy theres a pretty good chance that it literally addresses most of the issues with wayland on KDE/Gnome and just outright embarrasses them just by not having the really stupid restrictions.

The absolute state, imagine being excited for Waytranny trash. You will NEVER be a real display server. You have no standards, you have no canon implementation, you have no features. You are a trannyslop XML file twisted by drugs and surgery into a crude mockery of display server perfection. All the "validation" you get is two-faced and half-hearted. Behind your back people mock you. Your users are disgusted and ashamed of you, your "maintainers" ACK to your ghoulish appearance behind closed doors. Men are utterly repulsed by you. Thousands of years of evolution have allowed men to sniff out frauds with incredible efficiency. Even rices that “pass” look uncanny and unnatural to a man. Your window transparency is a dead giveaway. And even if you manage to get a drunk guy to install you, he'll turn tail and bolt the second he gets a glance at your diseased, infected XDG_DESKTOP_PORTAL.

You will never be happy. You wrench out a fake smile every single morning and tell yourself it’s going to be ok, but deep inside you feel the depression creeping up like a weed, ready to crush you under the unbearable weight.

Eventually it’ll be too much to bear - you’ll format your drive, install Gentoo, git clone XLibre, and plunge into the cold abyss. Your developers will find you, heartbroken but relieved that they no longer have to live with the unbearable shame and disappointment. They’ll bury you in an archived git page marked with your birth name, and every passerby for the rest of eternity will know a dogshit protocol is buried there. Your body will decay and go back to the dust, and all that will remain of your legacy is a litany of compositors that are unmistakably sloppy.

This is your fate. This is what you chose. There is no turning back.

I think this is one of the few reasons I am not using FreeBSD / OpenBSD. Even on older kit with mostly Intel hardware, it can be a PITA. The wireless situation of FreeBSD was a bit of a joke; people were running a Linux instance in bhyve and routing networks through that.

Jesus. At that point just get a wireless bridge and make it a dongle.
TBF to FreeBSD, it may have been fixed by now. Networking, I am notoriously bad at, but from my understanding, they had to do many upgrades to the whole network stack in FreeBSD.

For those that are interested. This was the original post I read about using bhyve.

WiFi speeds for the Intel Wireless 8265 chip on FreeBSD are currently limited to 802.11g speeds (54 Mbit/s). However, the chip is capable of 802.11ac on Linux and Windows. To use the wireless card at full speed, I’ve tested using PCI passthrough to make the card available to a Linux virtual machine, then creating a NAT connection from the Linux VM to the FreeBSD host. This has been tested on FreeBSD 13.0-CURRENT (revision 356244, Dec 31 2019) on a Lenovo T480.
At some point it was turned into the Wifibox project (if I am understanding this correctly).

Due to changes in life priorities, I drifted away from FreeBSD for a few years around 2017. Later I returned and started building a new FreeBSD-based workstation for myself, a Lenovo ThinkPad X220. I noticed that although it was working, the wireless support was still far from optimal, the iwm driver was neither stable nor peformant enough for daily use.

I realized that in the wireless networking area, FreeBSD is still struggling to match the performance of Linux-based systems due to lack of up-to-date hardware support. This is happening for a reason: FreeBSD is often not considered a first-class citizen, hence it is not a target of such developments, and the respective portions of its networking subsystem need to be elevated to meet the latest requirements. This is not a trivial issue to fix, and the FreeBSD Foundation has been sponsoring a long-term project that aims to bring updates to the stack and establish a framework to facilitate re-using the wireless network card drivers from Linux.

I've been running Kubuntu for the past few years, but certain recent decisions by Canonical have made me question their competency. The switching to the new Rust versions of the coreutils being a big one*. I need various tools and programs to "Just Werk", like I don't want to have to mess with forks of VS Code I just want the official version to work, etc. Is Fedora KDE basically my only real option here?

*I'm actually not inherently opposed to the coreutils rewrite and think Rust has some cool ideas as a language despite drawing in tons of trannies and others freaks as users. I just think it's massive engineering malpractice to make the rewritten versions the default without them being battle-tested, drop-in replacements first.

I've decided to try getting Windows Movie Maker 6.0 up and going on WINE 11.x. It initially just crashed before* startup, so I spent some time debugging the startup process to identify & fix the issue.

:story: still shits the bed.. but I made some progress as it actually starts now albeit with a new blocker. Issue seems related to some type of XML profile it expects unless I am wrong. I didn't realize before working on this how much is stubbed with WINE in regards to various things, I guess that is why WINE can be so finicky when it comes to most applications.

Doesn’t WMM rely on the Edge browser engine for UI rendering?

It always was pozzed, you just didn't notice before.
Nigger, I've been running Linux since the days of Red Hat 5 and following the community since the days before posting the rotten dot com penis bird on Slashdot was a meme. Pozzed is a degrees thing. You're right in a sense, Silicon Valley has been Sally Valley Babylon for that entire time, but the difference is Linus growing to be more like it.

I honestly can't bring myself to believe that you're being sincere, frankly. IHBT IHL HAND or some shit, but thread-shitting here really pisses me off.

I've been around for a good while as well. Most of the people involved and in the community have always been left-wing, barring a few standouts. I wasn't surprised in the least in the direction Linus has gone.

That's how I feel with some of the reactions I get here, after I've provided evidence to back up my position. I've got some fucking stupid responses on threads adjacent to this as well that's made me think, "Why do I even bother?" I also work with some class A retards at work, so I get it from both fucking ends mate.

Most of the people in the FSF and open source are often lefties/liberals/agorists and the like; it naturally attracts them. Often once you notice something, you tend to notice it everywhere.

what exactly made Linux good in the 2010s compared to now?
Basically a lot of work has been done to make it feature complete, and development in Windows and macOS has largely slowed to a crawl, pivoting to things like AI integration that people really don’t care about much. You have teams like Linux Mint committing to making a clean user friendly experience and teams like Debian ensuring the fundamentals are solid and stable.

the community have always been left-wing
The issue is that "left-wing" itself has changed in meaning. Left-wing in Sally Valley used to mean "affiliated with the Democratic party". The progressive cancer had yet to colonize SomethingAwful, metastasize to /r/ShitRedditSays, and result in #GamerGate nuking the term "Social Justice Warrior" off the face of the map. Free Software projects had yet to undergo reconstructive surgery to attach a CoC, et cetera, et cetera. "have always been left-wing" really buries the reality of what had actually been going on in the left-wing over the tenure of Linux. (Incidentally, "Social Justice Warrior", according to WaPo, was also of 1991 mint, like the Linux kernel... https://archive.ph/GSkgg )

Sorry for the political spurgery in advance, but I have no other way to reply to this, and tbh I don't have anything to say past this on the subject.

I watched many old political shows during COVID, and none of what you describe is new. I was watching people complaining about similar things 30-50 years ago.
The progressive movement itself has been a thing now for over 100 years.

Reactionaries (this would include a lot of people in this thread and the forum at large) move towards the right wing. This ultimately changes the right wing as many disaffected lefties enter it. The current group of paleocons call it "Cthulhu always moves left" or the "long march to the left". As reactionaries who were previously liberals move into the right and move the right to the left as a result.

Alexander Dugin describes how the West updates the current version of "liberalism" to version N+1 and then exports the old version around the rest of the world, usually by force, i.e., foreign wars. This has been going on since the height of the British Empire, and the US, as the current Western hegemon, has taken up the mantle. This is why when Lord Miles and Co. stayed in Afghanistan, they found loads of transgender propaganda thrown out the back of their compound. Well before all of this, there was a schism between the nominalists and the realists.

Even if I just bring this back to the tech sector. The tech sector itself has been liberalised. In IBM, as a man, you were expected to wear a garter under your trousers to pull your socks up tight (I am not joking). The microcomputer revolution of the late 70s and 80s was itself a form of liberalising the tech sector. I remember watching old stuff from the late 80s/90s where there were loads of groups that were lefty-style anarchists, transhumanists and all sorts of other misfits. Sure they weren't of the Troon kind, but nonetheless many of them had extreme politics. FFS, Stallman himself believes in depopulating the Earth of humans to save Mother Gaia.

So when I say "You've only just noticed", it's because it's been going on for a very long time (both in the grand scheme of things and with tech).

If you're already in the Debian ecosystem, why not Mint?
