I had a thought. A lot of these flags remind me of the playfields from Atari 2600 games. Due to particularities of its graphics hardware, it was a lot "easier" for it to draw horizontal stripes, so often playfields would represent backgrounds primarily as horizontal stripes of color with perhaps some details at the edge. Depending on the effect they were going for, they might make a sort of gradient with the colors of the stripes. What I'm getting at is, if you remove the game characters and such and flatten out all the stripes, I think many of these playfields would be indistinguishable from flags from this wiki.

Just realized something similar too. I was fooling around with MS paint, and I found out that if you shrink an image then rebiggen it again, it would look like one of those troon flags.I had a thought.
