You know the thing that really irks me besides those people in general that have defended the "remakes"? It's the fact that practically every other video game remake done so far hasn't deviated too much story wise from their original selves, and people didn't seem bothered by that. But FF7's remake had to be different, even though Square has remade at least 3 other games and, at least with Final Fantasy Tactics - War of the Lions, didn't significantly change their stories (the other two being Front Mission 1 and 2). The ironic thing with FFT is that Aeris and Cloud also happen to be in it. Isn't that amazing? A game those two characters didn't have to be in gets faithfully remade, but the original game they're from doesn't.

They have though. Frequently. And people have been mad. It’s why we should only ever get remasters or ports. Anything beyond leads to pain.

Why would they remake a game that everyone knows inside and out exactly and is remembered for two reasons, the high quality and a death no one saw coming.

It could be argued to keep the game as it was originally they need to throw people off at first.

But to answer your question, no one cares about Three Lions. There weren’t a billion people demanding a remake with so much extra stuff it would change the game by default. People have never wanted just a remake.

Heck, I’d argue the animation budget alone probably meant they wouldn’t be able to do the game in full. Unless they said ‘hey we are developing it but just based on time it willl be over a decade’

And considering what happened with other games granted that length in SE..,I can see why they did not go the route honestly.

Because people will still pay for it, that's why. How else do you explain video game remakes in general?

So far so good. I'm up to chapter 3 and I can tell you right now people are not exaggerating when they say it's a return to form for the franchise. There's a shit ton of things to do that don't feel padded and everything just feels like it has so much more depth and background.

It makes 15 and 16 combined look like shit.


I love how your companions all accompany you outside of combat (although interestingly enough they participate superficially in boss fights) so you don't feel like you're missing out too much on dialogue. I'm wondering if Vincent or cid does anything like that when you meet them.

So that is a thing? I saw in the video showing off in the Midgardsormr boss fight that characters who aren't technically "active" in the party were still present for the fight, just standing around, and thought it was weird. Honestly, it just makes it apparent that they should have upped the number of active party members from three. With the tech they have now, no reason everyone couldn't be active at once. This is one point where they should have deviated from the original, because now it just feels weird to have characters who stand around and do nothing, and it can't be justified by lack of tech and a turn based combat system that yeets characters to the shadow realm for fights.

I figure balancing it all out would have added more development time, it was better then nothing in my opinion. The way you can seamlessly instant switch between new party members outside of combat compensates for it quite a bit.
 
I reached chapter 4 last night and am enjoying it so far, the side content keeps you busy but it doesn’t necessarily feel like a chore (aside from some of the combat challenges, I’m not looking forward to redoing one from the Junon demo). The party members not being used still help out a little in fights which is cool.

It’s nice that everyone has an affection meter now, but that also means you have to be kinda careful if you want someone specific for your Golden Saucer date. Ex: If you want Tifa, you’ll have to prioritize choosing the best dialogue options for her in addition to using her Synergy abilities more than others’ and doing side quests she’s involved in.

As far as the audience is concerned yes and by that I mean :
A) She's literally named Aeris;
B) She just happens to be a flower girl that sells flowers for 1 gil to Ramza, and if you refuse to buy a flower from her, Cloud's cameo won't happen; and
C) Cloud at least recognizes her but not the other way around.

At best, you can make the argument it isn't the same character as her she appears in the original game, but it's too much of a coincidence. Also consider that the remake of FFT, had Balthier from FF12 in it, and he was very much like his original self. Come to think of it, Square way back when in Xenogears had Lucca, yes that Lucca from Chrono Trigger, make a cameo. Good times..
 
Finished. Liked it more than I expected. I resigned myself to a massively changed story already. But truthfully they really didn't change a lot of things. I would say they overstuffed as they always do, which is technically changing them, but it's worth saying the thread is consistent but in a slightly altered form.

I think innovating the combat past this point is not necessary at all.

And the game could scarcely be less ambiguous about things debated by me here. Comes down on my side I'd say, but I am biased. In some ways more than I would have ever imagined Square doing. Believing the opposition voices about those issues was dumb as fuck. Anyone who did it will be disappointed, assuming they don't revise what was contested.

Aerith dies. Cloud most affected. She confesses her love to Cloud in fact, and he's obviously willing, but alas such is life.
He even has a psychotic break when she dies where he now sees her when she isn't there and may even believe she's still alive. It's sort of hinted that Aerith has a calming effect on his mind, in other scenes where he goes nuts, so this might be how he holds it all together. The Zack business sent him mixed signals but it's clear jealousy (he even trashes Zack for abandoning Aerith at all, which is a form of irony for us the audience). Zack is also told, in the other world, that Aerith likes Cloud by Marlene. The only thing missing from this deliberate focus on them is Cloud saying it back but it's well past the point where he has to given his actions, reactions, lack of rejection for her, acceptance of her affection, facial expressions. Square obviously put a lot of time into this that even an autist like me noticed all the details. And it makes sense for Square to not commit him that blatantly if he's going to have a lot of development with Tifa coming up anyway. .

I think that's the fairest way to explain why the game will or won't work. It's a drama and they seem to understand that better with more clear signals about what a character thinks and feels. Maybe this wasn't achievable on PS4 but I felt myself getting something where in Remake I got nothing.

So let me see if I have this straight. They gave the audience the impression that Aeris is clairvoyant, i.e. knows things that her original self wouldn't have known in part 1 (and I assume in this part), baited the audience with the idea that certain characters may actually survive (Zack Fair being a prime example) even though they didn't in the original, and they still choose to kill off Aeris...for what purpose? Because that activates her Holy materia? Ok, so you want to repeat what happened in the original, even though Sephiroth still survived? How are they supposed to resolve the story then?

Believe it or not, it is suppose to be a coincidence. Cloud though, unless it was retconned, actually did travel to Ivalice due to the life stream. I think this was one of Square's ideas that got shelved because he crops up in a couple other games. Even though he's not named 'Cloud'.

Xenogears was originally going to be a Chrono Trigger sequel. If you're wondering "Wait, wasn't Xenogears suppose to be a FF7?" Yes, but after that idea fell through it got pitched as a CT game. Or vise-versa, I can't remember.

This is not the first time Square has done this.

So I took the liberty this morning to peruse comments on Reddit regarding Rebirth story/spoilers, and for the most part, I guess for Reddit standards, it wasn't that bad except for one thing : the retarded fan theorizing. Now, to be fair, I generally hate fan theorizing. Not so much because they're bad although they usually are, but mainly because they almost always never come close to what ends up happening. It doesn't help that the last time something like this happened occurred with Game of Thrones season 8.
 
I’d still say XVI is better story-wise overall. Ultima was a painfully mediocre villain, but I was never confused by what was going on and I always understood his motive. The entire last chapter of this game was a complete mindfuck. Remake was certainly not good either when it comes to that, but this is even worse. I don’t even know how you could get any more convoluted. And as for the final boss, it was just downright frustrating at a lot of points. In comparison, XVI’s final boss I had a lot of fun with. And I had fun with this game, at least for the most part, but the final chapter was just bad. And I know the general consensus here isn’t very positive of it, but after playing this game I just like XVI even more.
