A little bit of both. They're just adding the "Orange Man Bad" to the message, but they pretty much portrayed superheroes consistently as scumbags and hypocrites, and the eradication of supes is pretty much a positive development from the show's perspective. The very franchise of superheroes is so toxic, even their James Stillwell stand-in, Stan Edgar, wants to do away with superheroes entirely and replace them with soldiers powered with Temp V. The show obviously took the comics' message of "superheroes are bad" and continued to run with it, just adding some modern pop-culture references to it, like how the first season made fun of Disney MCU fans.That is a good question, what is this series about?

When the comic ended, for a couple of years afterwards, a popular hipster scum cancer within the comic community interpretation of the series and it's message was "toxic masculinity=bad" and Butcher's pre death monologue basically being him ascribing masculinity and being "manly" to being a "boy" and that people like Butcher were stunted man children who never grew up to be proper soy boy bitches and that Butcher envied how Hughie and his wussy soy boy nature was right even as Butcher only managed to get Hughie to kill him by manipulating him one last time like a beta bitch. Which is hilarious given that the final issue basically has Hughie turn into Butcher 2.0 and filling out Butcher style punishments and threats left and right....
I felt this way about the episode where Soldierboy gave Homelander the V1, I was actually pissed off and dumbfounded me that goons were giving it 8/9 on IMDb.
There’s a subreddit dedicated to the boys leaks. Apparently some reviewers/critics who watched pre-screenings have been posting the leaks which is why they were mostly accurate. However, there has been no pre-screening of the finale so any leaks coming out about it are unreliable (according to the subreddit).

Only reddit faggots had that opinion. It's beyond obvious that Butcher is Ennis's self insert in the comics. He literally did it a second time with his Punisher series. And show Soldier Boy is clearly Kripke's version of a self inserted character. Both of these guys are mega dweebs in real life. So their fantasy version of themselves is some 6'1" ripped Aryan monster with classical looks and a military background. They are adults acting like children worshiping their GI Joe action figures. But are now acting out the fantasies with comic book series and Amazon shows.
That episode ends with Homelander blasting the clouds with lasers. And the Boys a few dozen yards away from him in an open field. Next episode begins with Homelander at the White House. And the Boys halfway across the country in a secret hideout. With no explanation for how they outran and escaped V1 Homelander. A time skip out of nowhere.
