Well fuck, my game's officially dead. GM was clearly burning out but I only blame him for spinelessness. There's one of the other people in my group that I can easily get ahold of, wants to play and won't cause issues. Looks like it's time for Grimmy to stop jacking off into the setting notes and fucking do something.

So for you GMs, what's a good length on setting notes for players to read? I don't want them to read my novel but I don't want to skimp to the point of there being buttfuck nothing.

I usually do about five pages detailing any house rules, a description of the nearest settlement and points of interest within the settlement, a few paragraphs detailing the surrounding areas and notable landmarks/people/rumors in the area. Basically enough for them to be somewhat familiar with the starting area and then Branch out as they explore. I fill in details as we go along. I learned long ago to not fall into the writer's trap when world building for tabletop. Often you're the only one who will enjoy it. Just start with a framework of what you think might hook the PCs and improvise from there. They'll give you plenty of ideas of what they're looking for within the first handful of sessions.

I'm adding some characters that are crucial to my character's plot hook. Basically, they are crucial parts of the church that fled after the mind flayer cult took over the church. Still gotta develop their traits and characteristics.

Random question for the Gm/Dms out there.
What extra stuff do you do to enhance your game?

Im planning on getting some sound systems to play old might and magic music,
And have considered modifying the lighting (though that would be a hassle for reading, so its only a loose idea).
I am otherwise slowly printing out 3d magnetized tiles for better dungeon delving.
I use www.tabletopaudio.com for sounds. The soundpad allows you to create different "sound scenes" for lack of a better term. Can't recommend it enough.

I bought 7 Hue floodlights for our game room, two of them color. It's allowed me to set a good atmosphere by running different "scenes" in their app.

I also have a metric ton of WOTC pre-painted minis and Dwarven Forge scenery. That helps too.

If you're interested in fantasy art and how it relates to Dungeons & Dragons, I suggest the documentary, Eye of the Beholder. (Amazon Prime and YouTube have it.) It's interesting how it evolved from its basic-looking roots to the most complex stuff you see now.
On a side, related note, I'm surprised the woke crowd hasn't taken aim at Larry Elmore for his 'problematic' art. That guy knew how to draw some damn nice cheesecake :)

So, any experience with Kill Team, anyone?
Some of my friends want to start it and purely on looks and style, I'm playing with the thought of getting the Astra Militarium Tempestus Scions (or playing them but substituting their minis with Death Korps of Krieg ones), but I have no clue how good the actual game is...

Before I forget to do this again, that thing I shill had another fun little story time episode. In it, experience what may be the worst That Guy that anyone in the group had to deal with:

It'd be more affordable given the unit sizes compared to base and much moreso compared to Armaggedon, and from what I know (I only know people who have played, I didn't since I tend to not like minis gaming), it works better than the base game since the ruleset works better with shorter games from what I've heard.

I went into Killteam with no 40k experience. I like the game. You can get through a game in an hour or two depending on your experience. Doesn't take long to get a team up and running either.

The contrast paints and washes combine to form a powerful and efficient way to get those minis on the table in a decent amount of time.

In my homebrew that I'm making up as I go along that we're playing on Roll20, orcs have been gone since The Fleshwarp Plague wiped out them out apparently totally, not to mention the elves taking 99.98%, 80% of the dwarves, 70% of the gnomes, and 1/2 of the halflings. "History" (And I use that word loosely since history was written by a university and has a lot of political tampering) says that the only orcish villages and cities found were completely empty, the gates barred, and the city burned from the inside.

So naturally my players thought, since they would be exploring the wilderness beyond the dying kingdom they came from, they'd find them out in the jungle or deep forest.

Nope.

A bandit group (Dark blue banner with a red handprint on it) had taken over a nearby village, they went to check it out, and long story short...

The witch (Pathfinder class) in the iron mask had dropped her robe to reveal she had green skin wrapped her hair around a human slave that had recently eaten the heart pulled from the sacrifice the bandits used to "bring back the sun" (False dawn hung on for almost an hour, when the sacrifices heart was pulled from his chest the sun rose RIGHT THEN), and then there was screaming.

When the hair exploded away from the dude.

There was an orc standing there dressed in black studded leather and holding a spear, which he immediately used to stab out his own eye to give to the witch.

And the players got to see the witch call out: "BEHOLD OUR GOD'S FAVOR! BEHOLD THE CHOSEN OF GRUUMSH!"

The PC's quickly left.

SLA Industries 2nd edition kickstarter is going.

For the five people who played Deadlands, they're retconning the entire crutch of the setting so the confederates lost and there is no stalemate. You also cannot play them as a faction.

Yeah. Nice job borking your own setting and making it generic fantasy western with no discussion or nuance or hard conflicts morally. SOUTH BAD!!! is the end game.

But fuck em. I have the originals and they'll be the only ones I play if they wanna do stupid shit. I'll be sure not to buy any more of their books and games in the future. Because he is right- he can do whatever to his setting but I don't have to like or support his pussy behaviour.

Oh for fuck's sake.

Next up: burn all of those alt-history novels where the South won/achieved a stalemate.

Seems an odd thing to do, part of any wild west game for adults should probably acknowlague a the social issues of the period-otherwise you're just doing a bland sterilized 50's western. Retoconning it doesnt really do anything for the setting or IRL society. Then again Deadlands was know to downplay the nastyer gritter IRL aspects while paradoxically making the setting a grimdark shithole. which can kinda work for justifying diverse pc's but you really should no where to draw the line.
