Seems an odd thing to do, part of any wild west game for adults should probably acknowlague a the social issues of the period-otherwise you're just doing a bland sterilized 50's western. Retoconning it doesnt really do anything for the setting or IRL society. Then again Deadlands was know to downplay the nastyer gritter IRL aspects while paradoxically making the setting a grimdark shithole. which can kinda work for justifying diverse pc's but you really should no where to draw the line.

Enjoy your rootin tootin cowboy adventure!
To me this move reeks of awful whitewashing of the bad history and puts a PC bandaid on it without acknowledgement. It's, ironically, super duper reductive to me and far better to openly say 'here was the time - it kinda sucked' and give some nuance to the story or characters because yeah, you could play a Confederate. Or a Native amercian or a weird colonialist Brit. Attitudes change. Characters grow and understand.
And that huge spiel from the creator to justify his pussy behaviour behind 'real world impact' is bollocks. If he really thinks there were people gleefully playing KKK members lynching blackies in their weird west adventures or that a huge amount of us are gonna go closet racists due to alt history then he has super no faith in any of the player base and should just stop making any sort of media for consumption for such cynical assumptions that A) such cartoonish assholes exist and B) we're so weak willed as people we don't understand reality from fantasy. Or so fragile we can't understand historical context.
Maybe he doesn't anymore. Because he's conflating a fictional niche RPG as having dire IRL consequences.
