Seems an odd thing to do, part of any wild west game for adults should probably acknowlague a the social issues of the period-otherwise you're just doing a bland sterilized 50's western. Retoconning it doesnt really do anything for the setting or IRL society. Then again Deadlands was know to downplay the nastyer gritter IRL aspects while paradoxically making the setting a grimdark shithole. which can kinda work for justifying diverse pc's but you really should no where to draw the line.

Enjoy your rootin tootin cowboy adventure!

To me this move reeks of awful whitewashing of the bad history and puts a PC bandaid on it without acknowledgement. It's, ironically, super duper reductive to me and far better to openly say 'here was the time - it kinda sucked' and give some nuance to the story or characters because yeah, you could play a Confederate. Or a Native amercian or a weird colonialist Brit. Attitudes change. Characters grow and understand.

And that huge spiel from the creator to justify his pussy behaviour behind 'real world impact' is bollocks. If he really thinks there were people gleefully playing KKK members lynching blackies in their weird west adventures or that a huge amount of us are gonna go closet racists due to alt history then he has super no faith in any of the player base and should just stop making any sort of media for consumption for such cynical assumptions that A) such cartoonish assholes exist and B) we're so weak willed as people we don't understand reality from fantasy. Or so fragile we can't understand historical context.

Maybe he doesn't anymore. Because he's conflating a fictional niche RPG as having dire IRL consequences.

Welcome to the "Satanic Panic" of the 2000's. The villains have changed from Conservative Christians to Leftist Nutjobs, but other than that everything else is pretty much identical.

For the five people who played Deadlands, they're retconning the entire crutch of the setting so the confederates lost and there is no stalemate. You also cannot play them as a faction.

Yeah. Nice job borking your own setting and making it generic fantasy western with no discussion or nuance or hard conflicts morally. SOUTH BAD!!! is the end game.

But fuck em. I have the originals and they'll be the only ones I play if they wanna do stupid shit. I'll be sure not to buy any more of their books and games in the future. Because he is right- he can do whatever to his setting but I don't have to like or support his pussy behaviour.

Amen to that! Boot Hill was the better Western RPG anyway.

Hell, I do the same thing with my White Wolf games. I'll play with the old rules and just Rule Zero the metaplot and bad setting changes out of existence at my table. I'd imagine the Deadlands players who are alienated by this will do the same.

Also, does anyone in the hobby even give a shit about Deadlands anymore?

I mean, the same can be said of White Wolf's output and I'd say V5's setting changes shat the bed just as bad as this new development, if not worse. At least the original Vampire: The Masquerade was a very significant game in the history and development of the hobby and there's still all those memes and nostalgia over the original Bloodlines even today.

Also, with Vampire, a lot of people wanted to see it make a comeback due to the troubled history of the franchise that happened from 1999 onward. The metaplot got overbearing and alienated new players, White Wolf itself had imploded due to its own incompetence, and you also had the extreme edition warring and general backlash over New World of Darkness. Then CCP merges with White Wolf and guts the company to get the license to an MMO that ends up being vaporware.

Onyx Path comes along and V20 is released as a last hurrah, but it's really awesome and sells well enough to restart the franchise for a while. Then Onyx Path falls to SJW insanity and ends up dominated by most of the exact same people who turned RPGnet into an SJW cesspit and around the same time, Paradox Interactive buys out the World of Darkness licenses from CCP with intent to bring back the franchise to its full potential. People get excited, we even get cool stuff like the Storyteller's Vault and a decent documentary. Then V5 comes out and not only is it utter trash, it alienates the old fans and is outright hated by the same woke crowd that Nu-White Wolf bent over backwards to appeal to, and is hated for the most trivial and asinine of reasons to boot.

As it is, Bloodlines 2 looks like it's gonna be an utter trainwreck that is Paradox iss a Hail Mary attempt at salvaging the mess that is V5.

When the guys who own World of Darkness ruined their own setting and utterly killed the franchise, a lot of people were upset and let down. With the creators of Deadlands ruining their own setting, it seems utterly pointless.

Anyone outside of RPG.net will either not give a shit or they'll just ignore the new changes and play their games in the old setting with the old rules. There's not even any organized play for Deadlands, so it's not like the creators can enforce their new changes all that much.

And it wasn't like talented people weren't chomping at the bit to really do a reskin of VtM. But they made it so so bland. The only addition I liked are the blood resonances and even then that mechanic tends to spur groups who are far more invested in blood cultivation than anything else because of the power benefits. Which reduces the game to a single experience and that's...bland. And the fact it focuses so hard on thinbloods is just an utter mistake. And even with their kinda BS powers it STILL doesn't inspire anyone to play one.

My husband argues that v5 is far closer to 1st editions personal horror by lowering the powers effect and doing away with a lot of the revised 'intrigue and politics' and maybe he has a small point but 1st edition had an actual SOUL to it. And pathos and a passion and a twisted sadness over leaving your humanity behind. As compared to v5 soulless stock photos and uninspired fluff inserts. Everyone's fave parts of WoD are the favouring - the thoughts and experiences of characters littered through the books. WW was the first to really do that and do it well and v5 shat all over it. Feeding vitae to a baby my fucking ass.

Reminds me of the Shadowrun sourcebooks and how the better ones were written in the style of BBS-forum posts, with commentary from NPCs. They felt less like a dry assemblage of numbers and more like reading an actual discussion.

What is it about fifth editions in general? I recall Traveller v5 catching all sorts of flak for being (as one reviewer put it) a cargo-cult game. Lots of rules stacked together but there didn't seem to be an actual -game- in there.

Before I literally (:_((but mainly due to plain ol' tiredness), here's the newest video:

Just a pair of short stories where characters derail and/or commit suicide by impulse.

As for why it seems like v5 is where the game shits the bed, it's probably due to a mixture of new people entering the scene with their own ideas, as well as by this point the game's mechanics should be pretty solid, so tweaking to take it in a new way or to improve features are more likely to fuck it up. At least with older releases.

Newer ones are what happens when you get dummies who hate their audience to make the product.

What--and I cannot stress this last part enough--the FUCK?

This has got to be a Poe. It has to be. I can feel my sanity slipping away the longer I stare at this eldritch abomination. Wallace.exe has crashed.

Why on earth would you need $1,000+ to make a shitty DND PDF.

Also LOL at having a "pearl necklace" as a named item in a gay DND book. Real progressive.

I wonder if the whole thing is going to be this embarrassing.

"A gay wizard may put Mordenkainen's Double Penetrating Magic Missile in their spellbooks"
"When a trans character equips a belt of gender changing they must roll a DC 12 wisdom save or be stricken with dysphoria. In either case the belt of gender changing is destroyed"

No, they are that dumb. Nice to know that they could find 32 morons to criminally underpay for a shit supplement that may not come out given how a lot of these don't.

The dumbest thing is you can already do everything this shitshow claims you can do most likely in 5e given how magic works in the system.

Yeah put me down for a "satire" vote here. It's too stupid to be real (I hope).

Take the pre-generated example character. It's formatted like a NPC from any sourcebook. Trying to use that as a player character is pretty much impossible since it doesn't even list the CLASS. Is it a fighter, barbarian, rogue, a particularly aggressive cleric, or what? It's completely unusable in its current form for an actual person to play as. They also fucked up the stats. Assuming level 1-4 with a proficiency bonus of +2, the to-hit for the axe would be a +4 given the STR score, and the damage would be +2 also referencing the STR score. The light crossbow is a DEX weapon so it should be +2 to hit, and +0 for damage but thats wrong as well.

The example of play is similar, though not quite as lacking. Just gives each character a set DC for one singular skill to pass or fail. What happens if the players want to, say, roleplay and do something that the designers hadn't considered? (Also that DC is pathetically low, its easy to get a +6 in a skill at level 1, higher if you know what you're doing, so the chances of failure are about 20%, not nearly high enough to make it meaningful)

Actually, I know what this is. It's a masturbation session clumsily disguised as a product. If there is only one player, then the pre-gen characters formatting makes sense; they are only going to be NPCs. The note about inserting a DMPC to bail out the characters is the perfect way to put yourself into the game to romance all the weirdos you could ever desire. Gross.

Also that warning that you don't need to know the rules is red flag one amid all the other really obvious ones.

You're looking at it the wrong way. Those that would be interested in such crap are toxic people without friends, this "book" is a poorly veiled "Choose your own adventure" book for a solo player.

reminder that Succubus (male) is now canon in Pathfinder 2e

Yeah, because in PF Succubi are "seduce and/or kill you", while Incubi are murderrape demons that knock you up with cambions if you survive. The division is seduce vs. rape instead of male vs female which is a modern invention: medieval demonology believed that demons took a female form to steal the seed of men, then used a male form to use the stolen semen to knock women up with hellspawn.

I read a theory once that this was meant to cover up infidelity. Being the victim of a demon that seduces you by taking human form is less of a problem, than a wife sleeping around, apparently. It also conveniently explained why, say, kids would look less like their father and more like the handsome neighbor, both have been made victim of the same demon!

Come to think about it, it kinda sounds like a funny plothook...
