Sandy Petersen's Cthulhu Mythos is finally out. I have to say the crunch and fluff in it is pretty good, and the Dreamland's Cat is a little powerful at 1st level, but if you're using death by massive damage, it's not hard to squish. The only thing I don't like so far is the lack of artwork. For a book that took two years to bring out, they could have added some more artwork and used size 8-10 font instead of the 12 to make the book seem larger than it should be.
 
Well, he's probably got a tentacle fetish if he wrote that entry (the build-up of her backstory ends with her waking up to find that one of her friends has transformed into some kind of pelagian abomination and is gently running its tendrils over her face). The whole thing was deeply unsettling and decent writing, until it veered off into "and she is an awful person for defending herself against this monster that feeds off of fear!" Shame that the writer probably was getting off on it.
The heroes were okay but not that well done.

Insatiables....well, null synder forever makes me laugh.

Overall, I'm indifferent with beast.

There's certain titles that I like more in CoD then WoD but I would say some lines don't grab my interest all that much. Shame geist is underappreciated.
 
hey, remember, when I said, I might be running a short campaign for my local boy scout troop on here? I'm thinking of sharing some of the ideas, I had for the campaign and seeing if I can get some feedback or suggestions since the campaign planning won't start until next year

here's the stuff in question. Spoilered if people aren't interested

Overview: a blue moon themed adventure from 1st to 5th level, it tells of a group of adventurers meeting in a great city and ending up in a large interdimensional base of a group of villains of all types


Adventure level overview: the characters start at 1st level in the city of meti, a large metropolis with many ruins after meeting in a tavern one night. The characters reach 2nd level in the 2nd area, reach 3rd in the third area, reach 4th in the fourth area and reach 5th before the final battle

What monsters to use


the monsters would be a mix of standard monsters from the books, some fan made ones, monsters altered with templates, non player characters, reskinned versions of old creatures things from other media used in the adventure, things from other roleplaying games and monsters made for the adventure itself


The Tavern Meeting: The adventurers meet in a tavern frequented by all sorts of patrons. The place is what you’d expect: an old-timey pub with vaguely Celtic iconography and a lot of alcohol. The tavern’s name is the golden sun and has some cool decorations and great seafood and ale with the pie’s here been especially good. The adventurers might encounter things like barroom brawls, disputes with the tavern keeper, and finally after they retire for the night, various beasts and other things attacking the city as they rush to save it

A massive fantastical city on the coast of a continent, it has many different ancient ruins and a cavern system along with being on several trade routes


The rubble


The garbage area of the villain base, it has more than a few giant vermin and minor undead or threats along with some dangers and traps


The labs


A large set of experiments are housed here as the characters enter from a disused maitennace shaft and have to find their way out


The proving grounds


A set of various artificial environments both natural and man made, it has many creatures running around in various tests to prove their worth


The great city


A large futuristic city in the base with many dangers, the characters find many villains along with rumors of a gateway that will lead them out of the base

That's what I was doing with that game I was running before the players vanished off the face of the earth.

I was looking through my copy of the newest Dark Ages book, Legacy of Lies, during my lunch break today. So far, it looks good, but then something hit that made me groan. The game has some pre-made characters you can use for the story and while they'd pretty good, I came across Tsetseg. I like that the V20 version of Dark Ages is giving some of the other areas outside of Europe some attention and I'm all for a Mongolian Gangrel who is a world explorer and happens to have made it to the British isles. The problem is that the bio mentions that while Tsetseg was given a gender at birth, the character doesn't feel male or female and uses they and them pronouns. The art has an androgynous warrior with one side of their head shaved and tattoos. Granted my knowledge of the Mongols is diddly squat, but I doubt they had non-binary warriors who shaved part of their hair. Thankfully, the NPCs don't seem to be non-binary, but "kill it with fire" ran in my head after reading this character.

EDIT: I checked, Anna Kreider had nothing to do with this book.

Mongolian Gender roles are pretty well esblished and the society was patriarcal, their doesnt appear to be any indication of a non-binary options socially. Tsetseg is a girls name. Truthfully unless you happen to be a hindu then the idea would have been near impossible for a medieval person to articulate even if you consider this stuff legit.
Personally a better candidate for post gender would have been the post human tzmisce. Truthfully most Vampires defer to their birth gender because it's easier to hunt and you're usually beyond such things anyway.
Anna aside WoD has a certain....zeal for such subjects which often becomes clumsy when they do history, they often consider any culture outside of the West as some sort of proto-liberal ecotopia where the gays and femminists prance in the woods.
It's a weird juxaposition that sometimes they can engage in really cringey crude steriotypes and violenty whiplash to really cringey idealized depictions of non-western culture, as though they're trying to wedge narritives onto history when reality was a lot more complex and typically unpleasent. I'm half expecting a book on how the noble gentle chinese empire's treated their women with the utmost respect.

Their was a pretty good example of trans in the old clanbook lasbombra where she simply used visccitude to alter her form to her desire once she was a vampire. 3rd ed seems to have genrally been written by people who actually read a history book or two rather than scanned a greenpiece article, some shitty documentry and a paper puff piece.

Paizo has been increasing peoples review scores on Ultimate Wilderness to make it look like it's better than it actually is. I saw one review on the main page that had five stars out of five but their own page says they give it three out of five. Another review was five out of five, but the reviewers page said it was four out of five.

What the fuck? UW isn't even that bad; inflating scores just because is shady as shit.

The only bad thing about it was the Shifter class. The forum for that book got to the point where they had to close the forum for four or five days until the physical book came out before reopening it. A good seven pages were deleted by admins too.

The main reason why Shifter was such a bad class is because they didn't playtest it all unlike the Advanced Classes classes and the Vigilante class from Ultimate Intrigue.

I'm going to give them a benefit of a doubt and say that their website doesn't update the five star review when someone makes changes to their review write up and score. After all, their website hasn't seen an update in over a decade when they still had Dragon and Dungeon magazines. I can't be too certain on that though as I don't buy my books and .pdf's off of Paizo's store. I either go to DrivethruRPG or Amazon so I don't do reviews there.

I've been re-reading my copy of the 1E Vampire: The Masquerade core rulebook I bought off of Amazon recently, and I have to admit, I love the early material for VTM a lot better than the metaplot-ridden pretentiousness that came later.

There were a lot of early peculiarities in First Edition, especially when compared to Revised. The most obvious was the total lack of metaplot and the setting being a lot more open and mysterious than Revised Edition's take on the World of Darkness. The game was a lot more toolkit in its approach and you didn't have Justin Achilli chastising you in the text for "playing the game wrong" because you weren't playing the game in the exact same way he and the other WW writers were.

The Sabbat was a mysterious boogeyman who only gets about two paragraphs of description in the 1E corebook and both the Lupines and Magi presented in the Antagonists section of the book are somewhat different from the way they would appear in Werewolf: The Apocalypse and Mage: The Ascension. Overall, the First Edition setting feels a lot more mysterious, unexplored, and empty (but in a good way) and if I recall correctly, Mark Rein-Hagen had originally envisioned Vampire and the World of Darkness as a modern sequel to the Ars Magica RPG from the late 1980's.

I have to admit, the original Chicago By Night and Milwaukee By Night settings from that era kicked ass. Plus you had a lot of cool adventure modules like Alien Hunger, Blood Nativity, Awakening: Mexico, Ashes to Ashes, Blood Bond, and The Succubus Club.

I'd honestly love to run a "throwback" Vampire: The Masquerade campaign using the First Edition rules and setting assumptions. I might use Chicago or I might make my own setting from scratch. Maybe even make the game a period piece set in the early 1990's. I'd just need players and a venue to run it on, such as a play-by-post forum.
I got a Discord server, and I'd be interested in playing Vampire (never played before). Milwaukee by night seems like it could be fun, if only because vampires with goofy midwestern accents would be hilarious.

If we do Discord, it'd have to be text chat only. I don't have a working microphone yet.
 
I think you can use the one that comes with the laptop or such. If anyone is interested, I wouldn't mind STing.

I use a desktop, don't have a laptop just yet, though I am currently saving up for one.

I'm cool with either one of us ST'ing, as I had a good idea for a Chicago-based chronicle.

The others are indy. I also want to try out my created bloodline (Deava) who are best described as the "anti-Nosferatu". (The faithful servants of the Camarilla.)

It does sound interesting, I have to admit. My chronicle is old-school, using the standard canon set-up of Brujah, Gangrel, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Toreador, Tremere, and Ventrue as the playable clans.

The focus of my game would be the old-school "Anarchs vs. Elders" style, with the PC's as Anarchs.

Gang warfare and gang activity would play a major role in the story, with the Anarchs infiltrating many of Chicago's gangs, resulting in in-fighting among the Anarch Movement of Chicago, something Maldavis is trying her best to keep in check.

Both People Nation and Folk Nation gangs have been overrun with Anarch vampires (with the noted exception of the Gangster Disciples, a Folk Nation gang controlled by a Camarilla vampire in this chronicle), and I have been doing a lot of research on Chicago's gangs in the 1980's and early 1990's. You had all sorts of gangs of all different backgrounds: African-American, Latino, and Caucasian gangs all played a major role in the underworld of Chicago at the time, and both the Folks and People were a lot stronger and more unified in Chicago compared to today, but the early 90's was when the cracks first started appearing in these gang alliances.

It would be a sandbox game with an even blend of politics, action, mystery, and it would emphasize role-play and character interaction.

The chronicle would also be my first long-term campaign. I've only ran one-shots prior to this upcoming game.

Also, @Yaoi Huntress Earth I responded to your comments on my profile with some of the ideas I'm using in my game. Feel free to use them in your games if you wish.
 
So the forever in the works W20 changing ways just dropped and apparently the sjw boat that is opp has been rocked by some of the rewrites that NüWW has put in.

Oh, what did they say? I have to know. And do they do the alternate gender labels?

I really liked Shattered Dreams and they kept the social justice crap away with that one so I naively hoped it would be like that for the rest of W:TA. It's not that trans stuff doesn't have a place in tabletop gaming, I should know, I created an NPC in my bloodline book who had gender dysphoria before getting what she always wanted and how it helped drive her sire insane. It's just how obnoxiously it's handled and one could say, over-exposed.
