So, I watched Beyond on Sunday. It was good, for the new "actionized but still somewhat deep" breed of ST movies. It focused on themes of camaraderie, peace vs struggle, and becoming your own individual. Krall, as a villain, is one of the better action film villains I've seen.

I liked how they explained how he came to be. Basically, Krall used to be a human Starfleet captain who got lost in the nebula the film take places in. Finding the indigenous aliens's technology - the armored soldiers you see and something to extend his life , he and a few members of his crew became the film's antagonists.

The reason Krall is so big on struggle is that he was a soldier, who was born into war and only knows it.

I don't really know if I'm excited or not for Discovery - I grew up with Star Trek TNG (I was nearly named after Deanna or Tasha, nice save dad) and subsequently DS9 and Voyager (my faves series, fight me), then Enterprise (which was okay, but not great). I really love Star Trek - I've read a few of the books and own a couple, I've watched most of all series except TOS (which is really hard to get into, 'cause God is it cheesy as hell), I've watched all the movies bar Beyond, and I dunno if Discovery's gonna live up to my childhood series, you know? It might be because I'm older and cynical about everything but who knows.

And I don't know if I want Discovery set in the original verse or the Kelvin verse. It would be interesting to see the Kelvin verse, but we have the movies for that. Give me more original verse.

It will be set in the original universe, confirmed by Bryan Fuller, executive producer.

It kind of irked me that Krall's ship was supposed to be the first warp 4 ship when the whole point of the NX program was to hit warp five. I really liked seeing the NX though, it's one of my favorite ship designs.

Fuller has confirmed that Discovery's lead character will be a woman, but not the ship's captain... who may still be a woman anyway, judging by what he's said on the matter before. Also, the show will be set a decade or so before TOS.

I would have been cool with running concurrently with the movies in the Kelvin timeline, I would have been cool with post-TNG era Prime universe, but yet another prequel with no connection to any other series blows. Moreso than other crossover shows like with Marvel, Star Trek was able to weave references and characters from its seperate shows without being obnoxious, aside from most of Q's appearances outside of TNG.

Well, I'm glad it sounds super retarded.

Doing trek prequels is a bad idea to begin with, the series has way too dense of a continuity and too many super autistic fans for it to work out great.

lead character

but not the ship's captain...
For what fucking purpose? The captain is always the protagonist because they always have the most impact on every scenario the crew finds themselves wrapped up in. They tell everyone else what to do, for god's sake, and that works. Which other crew members appear in an episode is essentially optional. A story about a mook in the Star Trek universe might be nice as a short film or something like that, but not a whole series. It sounds like they're gonna turn Discovery into something like a character-driven war story with an overarching plot, and that's not really Star Trek now, is it?

captain benjamin lafayette sisko appeared in every single episode of ds9 and was given the lead credit (everyone else was alphabetical) so ya i agree

btw rip admiral ross

I like the idea of the lead character not being the captain, in the Slightly-Lower Decks sense.

I have no qualms with a "Slightly-Lower Decks" story, as long as it's a small one like an episode or, like I said before, a short film. I don't think anyone really wants to see a full-blown Star Trek soap opera, though.

They idea of a Star Trek show having a real lead character to begin with is kinda weird, since they've always had ensemble casts. Maybe it's just a weird choice of words.
But it would be kinda funny if the lead character technically isn't the ship's captain because the show takes place on an admiral's vessel.

It's actually not the first time they've considered this idea. DS9's lead was originally meant to be the character who would eventually become Dr. Bashir, but as it went through development Sisko became the main character instead.

I'm psyched to see a female lead, but like everyone else I'm so tired of tos era stuff.
I like the theory that the new lt commander lead will take over the ship in a wartime/captain dies type scenerio. Otherwise it doesn't make a lot of sense, unless the captain is corrupt or something, which might be interesting, actually.
Most of Fuller's work was on Voyager. I have mixed feeling about his episodes, like most of star trek some of it is very good and a lot is shitty. I really loved that bride of chaotic episode and a few other more serious ones he did.

If our captain is a non white woman, I'm hoping she's going to be hispanic or from the Indian subcontinent or be Asian. We've had our black captain (Sisko, who is my favourite regardless of how people view DS9), so we need a different race. Heck, I'd love a non human captain too - Starfleet isn't just all humans lol

They said the new lead is human, but there will be a lot more aliens on the bridge.
Actually, rewatching ds9 with a couple of my friends, they are now putting Sisko above Picard as Best Captain (I disagree with that but agree he's pretty awesome....)
My guess is they'll pick a mixed race lead, probably black. There still aren't many asian/Indian actresses that would fit the role to my knowledge. I wonder what actresses might fit this role?
