Yeah I think a lot of the sincere runners stopped doing GDQ just because how much the "It's for chartiy!" thing kind of reared it's ugly head when it started to come out how much money GDQ was just going to GDQ - plus how secretive they are about how much money they actually make.
Isn't the entire thing still a for-profit company that refuses to reform into a non-profit org for vague reasons?

It's not vague reasons - being a "for profit" company means they don't have to disclose shit to anyone about anything, hence why it's such a huge mystery as to how much money they make.

That said, looking at their website.
All of Games Done Quick's revenue from Twitch Subscriptions and Bits for the month of January will be used to help cover GDQ's expenses for Awesome Games Done Quick 2023, including hotel cancellation fees.
It's weirdly worded but they're keeping either a bunch of that money from Amazon or all of the money from Amazon.

https://twitchtracker.com/gamesdonequick/subscribers - suggests they're sitting at roughly 17,000 subs - meaning they take in $42,000 a month (or more) for basically free. The amount of bits that get thrown around they apparently keep too (minus Amazon's 30% cut) plus whatever undisclosed fee the charity pays to GDQ for running the event(s). They also take tons and tons of sponsorship money which they also get to keep.

https://www.doctorswithoutborders.o...nts/Doctors_Without_Borders_2021_Form_990.pdf if someone financially literate wants to look - maybe it's the $333, 872 in the "SUMMER GAMES" section.

Staying "for profit" but working "with charities" is a grift they do not want to shine any kind of light on.

I should've kept the implication quotes on "vague reasons" because it really is pretty obvious, but yeah good to know it's still the "totally charitable" venture it's been for years now.

Agonizing side note brought about by a routine opsec check on all of my usernames/emails, I noticed that because of a donation I sent GDQ back in 2013/2014, that my full name is on their website despite me donating it anonymously. Thanks GDQ, I really wanted to let everyone know who I am.

SGDQ 2023 submissions are opening this weekend with updated guidelines banning games such as anything Harry Potter and Five Nights at Freddy's.

Was going to ask what God of war did, then I remembered that based Kratos routinely kills women that aren't helpful to him

I'm curious about half of those bans, Ion Fury and God of War explicitly. Runner drama maybe?

Also worth mentioning: RPG limit break was a week or two ago. Some of the vods (robotrek, lufia 2) are cozy as hell oldschool three-guys-bullshitting commentated runs and the good kind of speedrunning background watch while you're doing other stuff.

Holy shit, is Fnaf still banned because of Scott?
Who the fuck is speedrunning FNAF games anyway? Besides the new one, I forget the name rn, I guess I could maybe see Sister Location or Pizza Simulator working, because of the focuses on "free" roaming puzzle-solving and between-night menuing and the sim elements respectively, typically "on rails" games with fixed progression don't make good speed games unless there's a way to seriously move things along, like Typing of the Dead.

Which only makes the general ban even more retarded

Security Breach, and yes, it's the only one that can be "properly" spedrun'd since it's the only free roaming one. Literally every other FNAF game is set to a timer for every night and relies HEAVILY on RNG luck, so asuming whoever would attempt this on these events would probably know how to cheat the RNG to always win.

other than that, there's FNAF World which is an RPG that can be difficult if you're going for a completion run due to needing to grind like hell to get powerful (like every other RPG)

Oh yeah I forgot about World. That came actually did have a pretty crazy any% run iirc.
IIRC the freeroaming fnaf has a lot of crazy out of bounds shit and a bunch of Portal 1 runners picked it up due to it being the same sort of weird edge-of-polygon trickjump navigation to navigate out of bounds. Sucks that's banned, those runs are fast and interesting.
Right Security Breach. Tetra Bit Gaming's videos about those runs are very good

Also why would
  • Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden
It was ran in 2014 and was pretty fun to watch, but had a crash near the end.
It has 'Aspergers', 'Diabetes' and 'Handicapped' as status ailments so it's probably considered too ableist to be ran
Bill cosby ghost is in it and if i remember right, Neogaf got upset at the dwarves being racial stereotypes of blacks or something

I thought it had that "O'gay" joke in it?

Also why would
  • Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden
be banned?
It's also an indie that uses all kinds of copyrighted assets and makes extremely clear references to actual living people that did not consent to their likeness being used in the game. Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Wilfred Brimley, etc - no way they want that kind of thing associated with the brand.

As a media form the game is allowed to make real world references, just like movies and books do. Its actually sort of weird that this is some sort of taboo in 99.9 percent of games.
