Does the original Space Jam hold up?

It's funny how they went out of their way to hire a black director and a mostly black cast because the main character is black (movies are only allowed to be directed by people of the same race/gender as the main characters now), even knowing this might not go over well in China. The first Space Jam appealed to people of all different races considering MJ and the Looney Tunes had that kind of mainstream appeal back in the 90s. We somehow managed to become more racist over the past few decades.

Yeah, that's a weird trend. I mean MJ was universally loved, and kids of all races loved the original Space Jam, and Looney Tunes is one of those universally loved things that everybody, at least, had exposure to in their youth. But now Space Jam is a black thing and fuck you if you don't like it?

In the 90s, I felt like we were getting super super close to all races being cool with each other. It wasn't perfect, but the sentiment was there, and my general upbringing was pretty diverse and race hardly ever came up.

Now, its like everyone is super duper obsessed with race and it is a driving force for everything. Unreal.

I heard that the Driector is up to make another Space Jam with Dwyane the Rock Johnson, if it's going to be a cgi shitfest like A New Legacy I'll pass.
But Dwayne isn't even a pro-basketball player. I mean he was great football player in his youth from what I understand but that's about it. So I guess its not going to be about sports? Is this just going to be Back in Action 2...? If so, I gotta be honest, the movie will be crap no matter what if its the same people who made Space Jam 2, but a Back in Action style film starring the Rock, who is all around actually likeable and less political unlike Lebron, could pay off with more critical success. And one of the things I felt that held back Back in Action most were having Brendan Fraser and Jenna Elfman as the leads. They just weren't that funny or charismatic.

Space jam a new legacy wasn't even in space, so sequel to it not even involving sports seems par for the course honestly.

Not even aliens were a thing this time around unless you count a 2 second cameo. And speaking of sports, I always felt that football or hockey would've been a better alternative to basketball for a Looney Tunes sports film since it lends itself better to rampant violence and wacky hijinks than basketball.

Also from what I understand, parents claim their kids have been pissing and shitting themselves over this brief scene...

Is Big Chungus really that big with kids?

No idea. The original image came from 4chan, where all memes start objectively uniroincally. The chungus part came from pre-op tranny Jim Sterling's use of the word chungus. It's funny because it's a funny picture with or without context.

Big Chungus is one of only things keeping the Looney Tunes relevant with kids of today and with internet meme culture/pop culture as a whole. It's kind of depressing, but it's the truth. Its inclusion in the movie now confirms its status as a dead meme. There's still the theory that the movie might be one gigantic shitpost, but at the same time it's too genuinely stupid to be one.

Big Chungus being in the movie makes even less sense considering that Bugs in the original short the meme came from was mocking Elmer Fudd who was redesigned to be fat. Elmer is not fat in the movie.

The 90s had the right idea about race, most people didn't give a shit what race you were, black celebrities like Michael Jordan and Will Smith got their success by being talented and having natural charisma and likability, there was no need for astro turfing or playing the race card.

It's weird because Brendan Fraser was like a Looney Tunes character in George of the Jungle and Dudley Do-Right, so they should've had him channel those instead of piggybacking off of him being mainly known for The Mummy (of which they made into a meta-joke in the film). They were close to doing that in the Las Vegas casino sequence.

It's about Wile E. suing the Acme Corporation.

Never mind there was already a Tiny Toons bit where Calamity Coyote tried the same thing. That was only a couple of minutes. I'm scared to imagine how they'll try to stretch that idea out to two hours.
I suppose that could work if they play out the humor like Harvey Birdman. The original New Yorker series the movie will be based on was pretty creative and witty. Wile E. Coyote always did have a somewhat sympathetic subtext to him, being a victim of his own addictions, and it'll be interesting to see if they decide to keep him silent/reliant on body language or give him a voice like he did in the 'Wile E. Coyote, Super Genius' shorts with Bugs. The Roadrunner was mostly just a prop to keep Wile E's antics moving forward. If I recall correctly, Chuck Jones - the legend himself - said Wile E. was the character he identified with the most by far.

The guy that animated the scene actually didn't have any idea that Big Chungus was a thing he thought that he was referencing the original short, it wasn't until mid production that someone told him.

By "pre-op tranny Jim Sterling" what do you mean exactly?

From my knowing, Jim hasn't got the surgery (yet) so I'm not quite sure what you mean by "pre-op" I'm guessing you're talking about before he went all faggy and changed his costume from being red to pink or before he put the dollar store wig on but I don't know.

Edit: he said it in 2012 on his old podcast "Podtoid" way back when he was a journalist for Destructoid.

Here is a tweet of him talking about it.

It's pathetic that the race for #1 film in the US is between a more than 20-year old Space Jam sequel that didn't need to made and a capeshit prequel that would have made more sense if it were made 10 years ago (or not at all).

Makes me nostalgic for a few months ago when the race was between Godzilla Vs. Kong and Mortal Kombat, lol.

To be fair they both are extremely low rn when it comes to actual profits, thanks covid for killing the horror that is the hollywood blockbuster

Lola was exactly like I've predicted - perfect, zero flaws, just like any stronk wahmen in movies these days, totally forgettable, even the weird "sex symbol" from the original that inspired thousands of furries is at least memorable.

Eh, Lola was pretty much the same in the first Space Jam too. She just comes out of nowhere and can play basketball better than any other toon.

From her very foundations, she's not a good character.

She's basically the Looney Tunes' version of Poochie. She feels like a character designed by committee to appeal to demographics.

The best Lola is the one from The Looney Tunes Show, voiced by Kristen Wiig.

She's crazed and, dare I say it, Looney! She fits right in, but they gave her a personality in that show, which was problematic. She's not a stronk female so that's an issue.

I love that version of Lola Bunny. Did people really go after that version. Seriously SJWs don't know joy

I personally suspect the film may try that but the majority of the film will probably be clips of different "incidents" where Wile E. or his lawyer showcases evidence of a failed Road Runner hunt, then the film switches to a flashback of the incident. It could actually work. But can a film survive if most of its content is just new Road Runner shorts with brief instances of court room scenes? Feels as if something like that would work better for a 30 minute or 1 hour special.
