I want CoD to become Xbox console exclusive not only to watch Sony grovel but also get the normalfags to leave Playstation.

At least most of the bottom can be emulated now, Spider-Man 2000 was so good back in the day. Top-wise, Uncharted was pretty good at least for the first 3 games, I wish those would come to PC. Infamous too.

Also is that random furry porn below Ape Escape?

I swear that people just ignore you when you tell them about game-pass, especially here in Aus where AAA games are >$100 on release nowdays
"OMG Game Pass is literally the worst thing ever because you don't own anything."

Forgetting that in an age where game rentals no longer exist Game Pass is a fucking god send and they're never going to *not* let you buy the game because it'd just be leaving money on the table.

Well, guess I wasn't far off with my $600 prediction.

And remember, it's not backwards compatible either.

They've fucking lost it.

The PSVR2 is $749.99 in Canada. Absolutely ridiculous. It's going to be absolutely dead in the water, Capcom better consider a PC port of Village's VR mode (and 7 pls) otherwise they're gonna get burned hard by the exclusivity.

VR works best with fun little arcade games IMO. It does not lend itself to ultra realistic movie games.

We're at a point where Devs are already stretched thin with AAA development, they're not going to risk that kind of shit with VR which is only just now starting to gain steam mostly through shit like the Quest 2. So anything they make is going to be tailored around getting it on the Quest 2, so you're basically just paying 550 dollars for some half baked Horizon and Last of Us experiences.

VR has great potential, I'm glad Sony isn't giving up on it. Though I ended up not using my original PSVR much because it was such a mess of like five different cables. Bringing it down to one is a massive improvement.

It's kind of a fun novelty now, but I'm positive we'll see some amazing VR stuff in a generation or two.

The barriers VR bring are price, setup, novelty and technology. I don't think we're quite there yet to unleash its potential. Sony could've had an advantage with VR with having a lower price point, but PS5s themselves are hard to obtain. On top of that, previous PS4 VR games are incompatible with the current PSVR. Why?

I dunno know about tying a VR headset to a non-upgradable device
ask me as a PSVR1 user (at least sony gave everyone the cable to make it work on a ps5 for free, doubt they gonna do that for the ps6 tho).

but to be fair I paid only 200 bucks for it (new) and got my money's worth, so there's that. still a shame since the tech isn't that bad.
otoh you can't even really get porn on it give the sorry state of PS video players (general issue, most VR video players are shit on pc too), so...

tbh I gonna wait and see what's actually in the box. going by the leaks I expected a higher price tbh (not that I'm gonna buy it).

remember the index HMD alone is 500 bucks, and that's just the headset. what makes it so expensive are the controllers and lighthouse boxes, the latter doesn't apply here but still...
MUH QUEST is nice and all, but remember that shit is subsidized as fuck so the sugarmountain can own the "metaverse" later.

I assume because back then they jerry-rigged it bare metal, or much closer for performance reasons. technically it doesn't really matter where and how the data comes from, that's why stuff like steamvr works with almost every headset (and pc has the resources for it). to be fair "back then" there weren't that many standards anyway.

the other reason is the tech itself, PSVR1 works with an eye-toy and image recognition (one of the reasons it's a pain in the ass to get working on pc - unless something has changed the last two years, but I doubt it); the PSVR1 HMD is basically nothing more than a bigger move controller.
if the PSVR2 is inside-out which means the tracking is different enough to not make it work out of the box.

apparently sony is talking with devs to port them, but I doubt that will work for everyone. robinson doesn't even work on a ps5 for example (but then that's crytek and those fucks couldn't even manage to update it on PC).

PSVR2 is very likely to have a price drop rather quickly much like the first. I don't know if the price drop is enough to make VR more widespread, because the areas is very much still populated by enthusiasts who are more than willing to try out experimental games. Horizon looks promising in terms of trying to get normal gamers to try out VR, Call of the Mountain could serve as a good guideline for other developers to try and make games to bridge the divide.

Sony's upgrade path for the games seems to be similar to the PS5 upgrade path. It's going to vary and depend most likely, but since two games already have free upgrades it's an OK start. They have not revealed everything though as far as launch games go, there's apparently more to be announced at a later date.

They seem very intent on keeping VR around since they stand to benefit from dominating the market space. Their push to mobile may also help this since mobile can be used for very primitive and low budget VR. This is assuming that they don't face a corporate direction change, they've started to shift people around again and hired new advertising and marketing people which usually signals a new phase. Sony Group is really pushing their multimedia cross marketing IPs hard with things like The Last of Us and they may want someone more savy with media instead of business to be leading their game division since Ryan has be there for quite a few years now. The quarterly report they released shows that his scheme to create tiers for PS+ did make up for falling user numbers, so he probably will still be around for the immediate future.

Only tangentially related, but Square Enix's President just stated they're going to focus on making "hit titles that speak to the global market" which sounds like a lot of "we're censoring for the west" to me. Interesting considering all their exclusivity agreements with PlayStation, who censor Japanese games themselves.

late to the post but I believe it's related to the demise of Playstation in Japan as some third-parties who have favored the PS ecosystem for decades, are trying to find every excuse under the sun that could stick. There are executives inside the RGG Studio (Yakuza/Ryu ga Gotoku) who refuse to port the Yakuza games on Switch solely because the console system clashes with the "underground attitude" of the franchise, or whatever it means.
Though Nintendo's hybrid video game console could technically run the Yakuza games on its hardware--or even stream them in a manner similar to recent Resident Evil games--executive producer and Ryu Ga Gotoku studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama is hesitant, for now, to port the adult series to that system.

"Do we want to put a title like this where we're going around and picking a fight with the world and doing all this Yakuza stuff, on a Switch," Yokoyama explained. According to the producer, the family-friendly image of the Switch in its home ground of Japan clashes with the "underground feeling" that Yakuza games project.

"We still kind of think of ourselves as people of the night world, right? We don't want to be like walking around the day with everybody else," Yokoyama said. "Like for us, it's kind of showing this kind of underground feeling. I think the underground kind of feeling is what we want to do."

There is also the interview of Capcom's president, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, who stated the Japanese video game market is highly Switch-centric (claiming the market as such is "unique") as 90% of game sales that appear in sales rankings are Switch games. Tsujimoto then went on to say that Capcom views this as a long-term challenge because if the market remains this way, they'll have no choice but to focus on smartphones + Switch for Japan. At the same time, however, he said it is not necessarily an effective strategy for the company because Capcom's developers have a more global focus. He then ends by saying that Capcom will continue to put their main focus primarily on PC (as they have been of late) while they rethink how to properly approach the Japanese market.

Going back on Squeenix's case and to add some context, the publisher has provided a huge output of game releases this year, more so than any other japanese ones.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion (Switch/PS4/PS5/Xbox Series/PC - 12/13)
With the sole exception of Dragon Quest X (both Offline & full package), everything has been available worldwide on the same day. What's been happening so far in the japanese market is that the PS games sell below expectations while the Switch games do pretty fine. PC gaming in Japan has also risen tremendously.

Japanese game sales 2022.jpg Japanese game sales 2022-2023.jpg

This is to bear in mind that Splatoon 3 has beaten the record as the highest-selling game on launch in the entire japanese game history (with a digital ratio between 30% - 45%) in just three days, surpassing all games from past console generations. Even Earth Defense Force 6 did pretty well on launch week despite not being on Switch, even if it's clearly obvious that most of the sales have been on PS4.

The Japanese console market is still alive and well, it's just Playstation not doing remotely okay.
The other problem is that the suits in large companies such as Squeenix can be entirely clueless as proven many times before. They should focus less on bloated budgets and more on fun & simple game projects that people actually want.

Square's decline has happened over a 15 year period with their western audience taking over during that time this started well before the PS4 and really began towards the tail end of the PS2. Sega/Atlus share a similar trend, all large Japanese games pretty much have to appeal to a global audience now. Bandai Namco's sentiments mirrored what square said with needing to appeal to a global audience.

You're not correct in saying that the Japanese console market is alive and well because many industry reports on have have shown that even on the PS3/PS4 getting titles like Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest did not help it(The PS4 is only around 9 million units sold in Japan in total and it's still expeted that the PS5 will reach the same). The Japanese don't want a console they want a portable machine, sony's dedicated portables world wide were not well received as their consoles. So their whole push into the mobile territory is to spread the playstation brand that way without having a dedicated machine and instead having mobile phones tethered to PSN.

To make a portable playstation you would be looking at an all digital machine with similar pricing to a Steam deck, that's pretty much the main reason why sony won't do it. They'll price their VR gear 550-600 bucks because that's a way smaller audience which consists of people who spend money on very high end equipment for the majority that can run into the thousands. But a portable intended to play PS5 games would run way more than a Switch.

(1) Game titles, especially AAA, do not affect the success or failure of hardware in Japan.
AAA is said to have a big impact on hardware sales, as the Sony Group worries about Activision Blizzard's CoD not being released on the PlayStation platform. However, PS4, which had Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, and FF, was not successful, and Switch, which was at a stage where it could not be said that all these third-party titles were available, was very strong. It seems that third-party AAA has no influence on the success or failure of hardware in Japan.

To further this when sony moved Headquarters originally, this was planned by Kaz and the other predecessors who oversaw the PS3 and PS4 launches. Nobody currently running Sony had a say in it.

This is from a WSJ article from the time of the announcement
As part of the move, Tokyo-based Sony Computer Entertainment, the videogame unit, will merge with San Mateo, Calif.-based Sony Network Entertainment International LLC, which provides PlayStation’s network services. The change will take effect in April, and the new company will be called Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC.

As free smartphone games have proliferated, the Japanese market for videogame consoles such as the PlayStation has shrunk, while the U.S. market has continued to expand. Sony said relocating to the U.S. would enable it to respond more quickly to industry trends.

As far as things with less bloated budgets they have that already, Square just put out a ton of smaller games like Star Ocean 6, Valkyrie Elysium, and many others(they also have a massive mobile game presence). Square just doesn't make games of the same genres like Nintendo. Splatoon's success doesn't have any bearing on a company who primarily makes RPGs. A More 1:1 example would be the success of Elden Ring, that's more in Square's wheelhouse. They're not wrong to follow that trend either.

The thing you're missing is though that over this long period global audiences have generalized. meaning the same type of people in Canada and America want the same types of games as people who would traditionally play a Final Fantasy or a Dragon Quest. You will still get those same types of games without needing to focus on Japan.

Here's the recent NPD for last month, notice just how many Japanese games are on there

If there's a big release from any Japanese publisher it will make the NPD, America's console market is way larger and more competitive. That's a main reason why it tends to drive innovation. Elden Ring wouldn't have happened if Skyrim didn't. A Larger base of Customers have more games to choose from and compare and contrast.
