The day Sony goes the way of Sega will be a very good day for gaming, but I don’t think it’ll happen any time soon. Maybe at the end of the PS5’s six-year lifespan at the earliest.

We've seen Sony forming its cracks as early as 2006, even a few months before the PS3 dropped to store shelves. Remember, Sony used to be champ back in the 90s and early 2000s, but then again Sega was the same between the early-to-mid 90s, and look what happened to them. Shockingly, at least Microsoft, of all competitors, understood what they're doing and why they're trying to compete in the gaming console war.

As much as I like(d) Sega, they were never the champ. Even at the height of their popularity, the Genesis was still a somewhat distant second behind SNES. After that were multiple generations of floundering until eventually they fizzled out (and I say that as someone who likes the Dreamcast far more than any Sony console). Meanwhile, Sony has maintained high sales the entire time. Not PS2 levels, mind you, but still high worldwide, with the Vita being the only exception. They only major region they’re dropping off is Japan, and Microsoft has gotten by just fine without them.

I think my ideal realistic scenario is that Sony rides out this generation, but they use this time to experiment with putting their games on PC, eventually deciding to follow Microsoft’s lead and put all their games on PC in addition to their own console. They then decide not to make a PS6 while also keeping the PS5 on life support for as long as possible, as they tend to do with their systems. I could see it being alive - as in, “getting new releases” - for at least five more years if they play their cards right.

My ideal unrealistic scenario is that the PS5 crashes and burns and Sony goes third party ASAP because fuck ‘em and their ravenous fanboys. Then Nintendo goes PC because I’m tired of their otherwise great games being held back by stupidly weak hardware. Then Valve keeps getting better at making hardware and improving Steam OS to the point where it becomes as stable and user-friendly as a console. Then Microsoft… can just keep doing what they’re doing, I guess.

PS5 Pro makes no sense right now.

1. Still issues with the supply chain.

2. PS5 are still selling out, so they really don't need a boost in sales yet, they just need to get more of them out to the market.

3. Really hasn't been a huge leap in tec since the PS5 came out, 3090 is only two months older than the ps5 and we haven't even got the 4000 series yet.

4. The cost of making a PS5 hasn't went down yet, meaning if they did a PS5 Pro would have to be a good $200 more than the PS5 is sold for right now at least to see any huge improvement over it.

5, PS4 Pro and XBone X marketing was mostly about 4k, something the PS5 can already do, so got to ask what would be the marketing strategy be for one right now. Guess maybe better ray tracing but not many games even on PC are pushing that yet,

A PS5 slim would make more sense, as that normally happens because they found a way to make the console for cheaper. Wouldn't expect a pro until late 2025 the soonest.

Hardware of the PS5 is pretty good right now, issue is Sony's game development.

The CD-i fiasco really must have spooked them fierce. Before they had no problem sticking their stuff on PC, even if they were shitty kid's games and a typing tutor, but something about the CD-i gave them massive PTSD to where they are massive shut-ins that don't want to leave their house.

Honestly, even if the situation between Nintendo and CDi gave the two 'nam flashbacks, at least the next decades (starting with the 2000s with certain meme-filled YouTube Poops and whatnot) may have helped themselves by laughing at themselves with their embarrassments.

The standard so far has been once piracy catches up enough to take a giant bite out of the bottom line, they release "an upgraded version" of a device. So as soon as pirate switch carts make a dent they'll announce whatever project comes afterwards (which is already in development) The switch itself is flimsy misdesigned hot trash, but it's developer friendly and has a firmly established userbase. Without any serious competition other than cheaper Steam sales or similar, we're definitely looking at another 3 or so years.

The thing is, Nintendo is a very proud company that greatly values being able to control every aspect of their business. It’s a big factor behind some of the major decisions they’ve made (see: their crippling fear of piracy leading to N64 cartridges and Gamecube mini-DVDs), and I’d argue it’s a big reason why they haven’t gone third party, and likely won’t any time soon. They’re too stubborn (not that that’s a bad thing) to put their games on Playstation or even Xbox, and developing games for PC means they wouldn’t have control over the much more open platform, meaning both modding and piracy would become significantly easier. And unless they made their own storefront, they would also have to share a significant chunk of their profits with Valve or Epic Games.

Nah, they already have a console for that.

I don’t think they’ve even acknowledged the CD-i’s existence since the mid 90s.

MS are claiming that Sony is paying publishers "blocking rights" to not put their stuff on Gamepass.
More info:
Sony pays developers "blocking rights" to stop them from adding their games to Game Pass, according to remarkable claims from Microsoft.

Reported by the Verge , the claims stem from a filing with Brazil's national competition regulator, as part of a review of Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The filing, which took place on August 9th and is translated from Portuguese, claims that Microsoft's attempts to expand Game Pass have been "hampered by Sony's desire to inhibit such growth." Going further, the filing alleges that Sony "pays for 'blocking rights' to prevent developers from adding content to Game Pass and other competing subscription services."
