Sony pays developers "blocking rights" to stop them from adding their games to Game Pass, according to remarkable claims from Microsoft.

Reported by the Verge , the claims stem from a filing with Brazil's national competition regulator, as part of a review of Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The filing, which took place on August 9th and is translated from Portuguese, claims that Microsoft's attempts to expand Game Pass have been "hampered by Sony's desire to inhibit such growth." Going further, the filing alleges that Sony "pays for 'blocking rights' to prevent developers from adding content to Game Pass and other competing subscription services."

If that's the case, it's just par for the course purchasing exclusivity, which each of the Big 3 are guilty of. You people were sounding like Sony was pulling an Epic-style 'these other services are fine, but fuck Game Pass' move.

The day Sony goes the way of Sega will be a very good day for gaming, but I don’t think it’ll happen any time soon. Maybe at the end of the PS5’s six-year lifespan at the earliest.
I can only see that happening with Sega tier incompetence by Sony while also facing incredibly stiff competition, not a likely scenario. Nintendo isn't seen as direct competition anymore and Microsoft got as close to that scenario as they ever would back with the 360.

Even then, you'd need it to happen at least a couple times in a row. Unfortunately it looks like they're not going anywhere. They did get booted from the handheld space though, so you never know, fingers crossed.

And this is why, and this is me repeating the same point here but anyway, Microsoft understands how to compete in the console war alongside with Nintendo. You don't have to be a fan of Microsoft, own their consoles or games, or anything to even understand that Microsoft has more brain smarts than Sony will ever have in this day and age. While Sony isn't going to leave the console business anytime soon, it still looks pretty rocky with the PS5 and all, and this could may well be their writing on the wall.

I heard Resident Evil 8 is one of them.

@Marissa Moira this is the company you support. Paying off developers to block games from other services.

Teleroboxer made an appearance in Smash Ultimate. That's probably the first time Nintendo even acknowledged anything Virtual Boy related in over a decade.
They’ve always had small Virtual Boy references here and there. A few WarioWare microgames are based on Virtual Boy titles. The Chronicle menu in Brawl gives a complete list of every first-party release on every Nintendo system, including Virtual Boy. One of the pre-E3 skits from way back shows Reggie playing a Virtual Boy and commenting on how realistic the games look. And the Tomodachi Life gif I posted is from the Direct that originally revealed the game. Honestly, I’m surprised they didn’t put Virtual Boy games on the 3DS Virtual Console; it was their only chance at rereleasing those games in a faithful way without the eye strain, and I’m sure a lot of people would have jumped onboard just out of morbid curiosity about what the heck Mario Clash and VB Wario Land are.

That would require actual effort. Also, I believe the Red'n'Black color scheme was part of what the complaints were regarding the VB, and trust me, if you've played any game with a black background on the 3DS with the 3D on, you'll get crosseyed quickly with the ghosting that can happen. NOT. FUN. AT. ALL.

SEGA actually had good games, unlike current Sony. People still talk about Dreamcast games fondly today. People forgot about Horizon while they were still playing it

They could have Super Gameboy'd it as part of the porting process.

While red and black wasn't exactly great on the VB my main problem was that the games were a bit constrained due to the hardware, it felt like a souped up gameboy tweaked to do 3D. It was just weird for that point in time.

Sure, but making games at a Switch level is less imposing and less insanity than making a PS5/XSex game where people are AAA graphics whores.
Nearly every japanese game can be run on Switch, and the exceptions are very few (latest mainline EDF, Ryu ga Gotoku games on Dragon Engine, From Software titles, some titles from Capcom using the non-modified RE Engine, modern Final Fantasy). The visual differences are either quite minimal or literally non-existent, but the most important thing is that it's essentially the same game between PS/PC/Switch versions.

So it's more a matter of whichever is more convenient to play for the user (Switch for the portability/versatility format, or PC for keeping a game library not tied by "generations" and the best performance possible for an enthusiast).

It's mainly the western AAA titles which continue to skip out the Nintendo console but considering they often tend to be propaganda set pieces for current social politics instead of seeking to be memorable fun games, I can't say they'll be missed. They're also the main proof that better hardware & higher graphics fidelity don't equate to better (and more) games, for granted.

Crazy Taxi, a classic.

Horizon: Zero Dawn. Who?

Mainly yes, but you still have the ever-shrinking, yet sizeable FPS enthusiast market. They need to have their optimum frames per second, trilinear mipmapping, etc. These are the stalwart remnants of pc gaming of yore, performance driven above all things. Both activision and EA have done a stellar job at turning each of their AAA properties into glorified slot machines so I don't think they're long for life in the sorry state they are at the moment.
I agree about sony's political pieces. I couldn't give a rat's ass about Dad of War 2: The Daddening or Horzinon Who Cares. Like you couldn't fucking pay me to play the last of us 6: Elliot's College Years; these are tailored exclusively for the industry's brainlet mouthpieces like kotaku and their rank parasites on reddit and twitter. They have about as much to do with gameplay and storytelling as I have in the field of space research and exploration for the last decade.

No disrespect. I'm just not into Japanese franchises.
I hope you'll consider playing EDF (Earth Defense Force) at least, with 4.1 which is priced around 15-20 bucks by default on Steam.
It's forever my number #1 game franchise in a similar fashion to what Skies of Arcadia is for our local Vyse. And it's the pure, unadulterated form of fun, either solo or online.

It's the problem with modern western games as a whole (both AAA & indie), a lot of them entirely forgot what is fun due of the devs/executives obsession to make the medium "mature" by their own standards. Also, promoting ugliness in general despite one of the main purposes of vidya is escapism.

What japanese games have you played? I get why you wont like anime games. But what about Nintendo games? I never met anyone that doesnt like Mario or Zelda. Have you gave Sekiro or Yakuza a chance? If its because its "too hard" as most japanese games usually are I can understand. The last PS3 game I beat was Ninja Gaiden Sigma on normal mode. Was one of the hardest games Ive ever beaten.

Even though that is mostly the case with many Japanese titles and pretty much every indie game, you've still got marquee games from both sides of the ocean missing the Switch because of performance issues. Games like Monster Hunter World, Red Dead Redemption 2, Soul Calibur 6, Tekken 7, Ace Combat 7, Final Fantasy, Elden Ring, Sekiro, Resident Evil Village, any Yakuza game, and even GTA, which has been released on literally everything else. Some of the biggest third party releases of the year are simply skipping the Switch because of its hardware limitations.
