This was my experience too. I’m a leftist but I can’t find any actual leftism in SA. They clearly don’t read any leftist books and you sure as shit know they’re not out protesting or doing any activism.

As far as I can tell they’re lib trash who saw a couple of socialist memes and latched onto leftism to continue justify being nihilistic children. I know sadbrains is real. I’ve struggled with it. That cesspool doesn’t help one bit.

Its a low-effort troll tactic, and the hard counter is to force them to clarify and then defend their position (and if they don't to dismiss them as an obvious troll). The only time it works is when the troll using said tactic knows their opponent is dumb & trying to appear smart, and will launch themselves full force at the first apparent "GOTCHA" (often times because they've been employing the same tactic) like a cat trying to pounce on a laser pointer dot, either because their position is shit or because they don't care about actual debate, they just want to score points and look smart. Often both.


The fact Trump & krew have been using it to great success for almost 4 years should tell you all you need to know about the current state of the media.

"The purpose of argument, should not be victory, but progress."

While I think there are more commas than necessary, this I think highlights the difference in mentality. FAU and hugbox types clearly want to WIN at arguing. How do you win? Get enough people to agree with you I guess?

When I argue, I'm trying to move me and the person I'm arguing with into a better understanding of the issue. It's a collaborative effort with competitive elements, not a zero sum game.

Lots of people just want their existing views validated. Some of us are able to resist giving into that temptation by retreating into a safe space where nobody disagrees.

A problem though is finding people that genuinely want to have a conversation about something. Far too many people don't give a shit about intellectual honesty, they'll redefine words, use weasel terms, strawman. You see this everywhere on Reddit.

Nobody really has an argument in good faith anymore because the alt-right is trained on Kermit and Manlet Ben so the actual idea of a rousing debate is something they want but never have.

And the left is just clawing for wokeness points so there's no point in debating anyone. FAU isn't entirely wrong.

FAU is entirely wrong.

Primairly - Sarah Huckabee's words were not vague or misleading, they were super direct. She explicitly stated that the left-leaning media should be embarrassed by the circus they perpetuated over the course of the last two years when considering, even if they were correct (and they weren't), that they were cheering for would be a tremendous destabilizing blow to America's stability - on top of all the damage they've already done to America's stability via protesting and #resisting a duly elected sitting President.

It's like rooting for the company you work for to close because you don't like the CEO, not realizing (or not caring) that if your company closes things would also be bad for you.

There's word trickery (or Word Magic) in all politics, but it isn't really a conservative tactic and is much more a liberal one. The "word tricks" he's referring to from the alt-right are things like "If there is no difference between genders, why do transgender people need SRS?" which are usually a critical examination of the far-left talking points.

Secondly, debate is literally the best thing you can do to teach and to learn about yourself and others, politically and otherwise. You aren't supposed to debate people on shitholes (Reddit, SA, Stormfront, 4chan) but the idea that you shouldn't engage anyone at all is kind of insane. Ignoring people who you don't 100% agree and those associated attitudes is one of the core reasons we have President Donald Trump.

It's 2019. Nobody will change their minds because their brains have been fried by easy access to in-groups on social media who all agree with you. You see this with SA, you see this with Reddit and you see this with Facebook.

"Debate" has become some kind of meme on the right which is fucking stupid because they've drank the same poison.

I don't disagree 100%, I'm just pointing out that most people you encounter in real life (coworkers, family members, friends, etc) are not all alt-right channers or far left tumblrites and are usually moderate people that you can, and should, have political discussions with.

FAU is speaking like (and likely is) someone who doesn't get outside all that much and maybe doesn't know how real people interact about some of these things.

That is just not true. On this very forum, in just the past month, I have been convinced through debate of changing my viewpoints on several topics, and seem to have moved some other people's viewpoints. In the process, I obtained more information than I previously had, distributed some information, and had some of my own incorrect assumptions brought to light.
