I get that they're trying to say they use it as a "step back from the keyboard and take a break to calm down" sort of thing, which I could understand if someone is melting down or chimping about something stupid.

But they seem to use it more because six hours is definitely long enough to take an opposing view out of the conversation and steer the thread in an approved direction.

Alright, yeah, I can't really deny that this is a fucked up reason to give six-hour probations. I'll take my previous statement back, although I'll still defend the concept of six-hour probations as a means of saying "step away from the keyboard and go outside", which is what they used to be used for.

It was rarely that, even back in the day. Sure it happened sometimes, but mostly it was the mod wanting the probation to go through without having to both an admin or a first/second time warning on a minor violation.
 
6ers for being dumb are fine but because they allow mods to avoid admin oversight(anything more than a 6 hour probation requires admin approval) they've been used to punish wrongthink and craft a fiefdom which is the opposite of what mods are supposed to be doing.

Zack Parsons was the worst thing to ever happen to SA, he was a shit admin, he wasn't funny, and he would stick his nose into retarded shit when he had no fucking clue. He was also one of the first people to agenda-ban on SA.

Even when I was a 13 year old and read the main page of SomethingAwful, and had no idea the forum existed, I would always groan when I saw that today's article was written by Zack Parsons.

I liked Zach's articles (and agree with him on the game acronym thing- descriptive thread titles is a rule) but he was a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad admin who went on to pave the way for even more bad staff members to follow him.

That would require you to basically purge 90% of the mod and admin staff on SA. That is not going to happen. The actual forum 'rules' are basically meaningless and have been for quite some time. You can get banned if you rub a mod the wrong way, prove them wrong, make a funnier joke than them or just for any old bullshit. It really isn't Lowtax's forum anymore. 99% of the funny shitposters are gone and the ones who are still shitposting are eventually going to get banned or perma'd at one point. Purging the mods/admins would basically lose you of their cocksucking sycophants, which is pretty much the entirety of SA's userbase now.

Not to mention those 6-hour probations are basically a running list of thought crimes so they can eventually throw you into the gulag.
