I don't want to cause a ruckus, but this reminds me of a situation I paid witness to at a sporking blog. [People take books/fic and make fun of it.]
Basically, some dumb Pokémon fic which tried to teach people how to write Pokémon fic and did a terrible job of it was being sporked. One of the chapters was about how you shouldn't use any random tree names for Professors, because Oak, Elm and Birch were one specific tree type and if you used the most generic name ever you were doing it wrong. The fic took this moment to criticize Professor Ivy due to her name.
Then things went downhill when someone who already disapproved of the spork then declared the whole thing moot because the sporker defended Professor Ivy. Which would be one thing, except...
- the person didn't immediately explain their issue with the situation, so people started asking among themselves what could've caused it, and someone suggested it was the character's appearance - Professor Ivy is a rather sexualized character;
- the person declared that was untrue and that their issue was with the name, but didn't make a point very easily - that is, people were saying they didn't get why the name was so offensive compared to the body;
- instead of crafting a new explanation, the person accused the other posters of trying to enforce their own viewpoints on her and accused them of appropriating feminism - as if she wasn't allowed to be angry however she wanted - while the general community reaction was 'hey what's exactly so offensive about this, could you explain it?';
- she also declared Professor Juniper to be a sexist character, who was weak and lesser in the story compared to Cedric Juniper and was 'prevented from joining the story' thanks to 'her ovaries';
- while on another blog, she posted links to her 'main opponent's' FF.n profile and used them as evidence that their opinion was meaningless.
...so, yeah. The spork was shut down and stuff happened after that that doesn't matter. Looking at some of the posts here just reminded me of this. [And much as it's less-feminism-sperging now, I think actual incidents of heavy stuff should be considered rather than just yelling at random idiots.]
