Whats the best freeplay mod so far?
I tried IWP and anomaly and setting them up was a headache.
Stalker is not dead is a buggy spic mess and gamma is for the unemployed.
I just want to play as a merc and kill for pay after work without a 60 hour setup time.

Based on COC, probably Call of the Zone, it's a COC installation with all of DoctorX mods installed at the same time and tweaked by him before he died, it's got a healthy enough addon community though I haven't heard much after 2024. CotZ focuses on reactivity and making the general tasks and errands feel better by adding variation and randomness to them, one of the only mods to do it.
But as it is with other mods, if you want the good stuff, you gotta know russian or have the skin to not care about a shitty translation.
There is Global War, which uses the CoC base and unleashes the AI to make it the ultimate warfare mod, so you can bring glory to your clan and own the entire zone. It's pretty fun but the last translated version is 0.5.1 while the mod is in 0.5.2, of course it'd be hard to know this because they discord gate their downloads like niggers.
0.5.2(Untranslated):

0.5.2 was a pretty big update to the game so if you can I do recomend playing that one.
It is relatively easy to play Global War in russian without knowing russian since the mod doesn't have much talking, just a lot of shooting, but ultimately it is up to you.

Dead Air is still in development and it is the true successor to CoM, so you can try that, 0.99b is on the addons tab of it's moddb page, and if you want you have a lot of russian addons that add secondary quests to the world.
Legend Returns is a mod that adds stories for each faction but it's been translation cursed for years so you either get spotty translations or you get the mod in russian.
Dollchan is a weird one, it adds new stories and side quests and has a marginally different gameplay but it's also quirky by itself.
AREA is a good one if you want to play a meme masochism russian mod, it has a good translation to english but you will be hard pressed to find it fun per say.
Or you can go back to base CoC or it's less known repacks, you'll often find more fun going through 2014-2018 mods than you will these new ones.

But generally, SOC mods are still better

Which ones would recommend?
Depends on your familiarity with mods, and what exactly you want. If you like base SoC you'll like these.
Do note that almost all of them follow a SOC structure where you start in a section with a definite story, despite being pretty freeplay and having lot's to do.
If you want a more survival SOC game, try Autumn Aurora 2.1, old mod but still very good, although it doesn't change much aside from completely overhauling visuals and gameplay.

Generally, the SOC modding scene has the most detailed and full mods since they are the oldest around and they like to deal in total overhauls, if you want something vanilla you can get OGSR, I recommend OGSR Legacy without the Gunslinger crap, or Rearmed if you want more weapons, OGSR is a mod that grabs the main game, changes the storyline and adds
sidequests and mechanics and maps on top of it, it's a pretty good way to get into this side of Stalker modding without jumping into some weird obscure ass rape mod.

From here on, just like OGSR, all of these mods make changes to the storyline and adds maps.

If all you want to do is shoot and look at weapons, try New Arsenal 7, janky and insane but the only thing it cares about is having guns, and being good gunplay, and it delivers both.
Prospector's Project is a really good "hardcore" mod that massively overhauls the gameplay and makes stalkers behave insanely intelligently.
Fate of the Zone is a cagger's dream, it's a freeplay mod built ontop of SOC and OGSE, and completely redesigns the zone to be the hardcore and realistic in the authors autistic vision, it's notable features are slow progression and dynamic pouch placement on your character which affects gameplay (i.e. better armour has more attachement points, plus you gotta buy pouches).
AlternativA 1.4 is a interesting mod that replaces the entire questline and creates a new world for the zone, it's a very schizoid type of mod, not in a memey way, but you can tell the author has a vision, at the start of the game you have several available questlines you can pick that are all tied to factions, so i.e. you may join the military or the loners or bandits which all have different stories.
True Path follows the story of a military squad leader regrouping with the failed remains of operation Monolith to find out how the Monolith kept downing their airships, it adds a bunch of stuff and is basically a new game.

There's a ton more but these are personal recommendations.

Did something happen to the STALKER Gamma groomcord server? It seems everything has been wiped off.

My primary concern with Stalker 2 is that it does not quite feel like a traditional Stalker game. Even after disregarding the unnecessary political retcons that remove references to Russia or Russian-related elements, the overall experience resembles Metro Exodus, with its gritty visuals and somber tone. In contrast, the single-player mod for Escape from Tarkov seems closer in spirit to the original Stalker trilogy. Escape from Tarkov is one of the most puzzling games I have played. The lore, setting, and characters are compelling, but they are mostly overshadowed by its bad MMO mechanics. Beneath the awful MMO servers and greedy business practices, there is a horror-themed military shooter with significant potential. The story content of Escape from Tarkov resembles a pre-Rainbow Six Siege Tom Clancy game infused with horror elements.
