I just beat Shadow of Chernobyl, no mods.
fuck that goddamn killzone hallway
way too many enemies in such tight corridors

the final fight going from portal to portal across the compound was fun though
the railgun and the endgame AR were great and i wish i got to use them more

Started Call of Pripyat. Beginning is rougher than Chernobyl's, I'll say. But it clicked when I decided stealth was gay and wiped out the treatment plant of mercs. Fuck your exosuit, the bullets to your helmet still impact your skull. Buying the info on the gas with the proceeds from that got me an artifact locater that wasn't shit, so I'm currently going around hunting for money. I can order an exosuit, but I can't run in it and already don't like how limited stamina is now that the electro artifacts no longer do anything of actual use.

Make sure to look more carefully than in other games. Stashes no longer require finding them via corpses and can always be found laying around

Which can be exploited by looking at a stash map and knowing that you can get an AKM-74 with a 'nade launcher, SVD and a VSS in the first hour of the game by going to the Burnt Farmstead and then taking a hike towards the closed off road in the northwest corner of the map by the sawmill.

I got the special black not!deagle and a silenced sniper rifle from Nimble. I think he cheated me with the armor I could order from him but the helmet gave me night vision so eh. I got the second tier of tools by sheer chance but had to look up where to even get the first so I can start upgrading.

Moved on to the second area since I more or less cleared out the first from what I could immediately get.

I want to love Stalker Gamma, but some of the decisions in it are just pure bullshit.
No option to even buy a gun or armour?
Unable to create C repair or medium armour kit without an advanced repair is stupid.
I enjoy the mod pack, but some of it are just annoying.
It goes from being tough and fair to “you should have read this thread on Reddit from two years ago”

I kind of made Pripyat boring by siding with the bandits and not pissing off the loners. I was thinking of trying a Shadow of Chernobyl run where I killed Duty and Freedom both. Think I'll try the opposite of what I did in Pripyat in the meantime. Spend more exploring the world and killing people.

I went in fairly blind and liked most of that stuff. Most of the time when games have a setting where there's lots of shitty gear lying around and guns that can jam and stuff, you never interact with any of that past the first half hour of play because once you get decent shit it's easy to use it to save up for more decent shit. Or whatever.
The best part of a lot of games is the very beginning where your character sucks, you're eating shit and using whatever's at hand. Gamma stretches that phase out for like 80 hours.

There are a lot of stupid decisions and leftovers from previous stupid decisions in it though. When people complain about parts/maintenance I have no idea whether they're talking about the version of it from years ago from the original sub-mod where shit did what it was supposed to, or the version I played with where half the items that obviously had very specific purposes for gun repair were now functionally equivalent to but somewhat worse than a piece of underwear, or whatever weird slightly different way it probably works right now.

Good luck at the Bar. On a flip side, you will get access to good rifles early. I usually end up mowing down Freedom, fuck those hippies.

I reinstalled GAMMA a couple days ago, I noticed the newest version has a pretty thorough contextual tutorial now. It's small walls of text like you tend to see in jap games like the Monster Hunters, but it tells you a LOT of stuff that you'd otherwise have to dig into your PDA's Guide section to learn, and gives some really good baseline advice to get by day-to-day in Gamma.

Even if you don't want to get the official launcher and update to the newest version, READ THE GUIDE in your PDA. It's insanely fucking useful and clarifies a lot of game mechanics, among other things. Basically an in-game wiki by itself.

I have been doing a curious look, but I can't find the options to do that.
I am also playing the version of gamma that was released on GOG.
They're not in-game options, they're mods you'll have to toggle on and off in the ModOrganizer2 list.

There's one that adds a Black Market to buy and sell guns (note: only specific merchants, not everyone). Personally I always turn on the "Show dead bodies on minimap" one and turn off Campfire Saves too, at bare minimum.

I haven't use the GoG one-click version, so idk if they hide MO2 from you or anything like that. You might have to go on the Gamma discord and follow their install method to get access to all that shit.

I am more or less finished with Yantar already and want to go back to try that hostile Strelok Chernobyl run.

I can't place it about Pripyat. It feels like a massive step forward in every regard save the actual Stalker bits, which were dumbed down as one kiwi posted long ago in this thread with anomalies being restricted to a select group of areas. When it's good, it is fucking good. But so much of it feels dull.

I'm pretty sure I am that Kiwi, and I'm also pretty sure this is the post you're referencing (damn, it was nearly a year ago...), if that isn't what you're talking about, then it doesn't really matter, I still share your opinion on the matter.

The unnecessary number of neutral factions, the fewer mutant spawns and the restricted anomalies have always been some of my main issues with the game, as they make the Zone seem far less threatening, especially when you consider that the whole game takes place closer to the center than the previous two. If there was ever a game that justified ramping shit up, it was undoubtedly Call of Pripyat. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, so now Zaton and Jupiter can become neutral havens, and then Pripyat drops the sad remains of the Monolith on you to create the illusion of danger.

GSC neutered half the Zone and added nothing new to replace the "danger" they removed. Think about it, the Military and the Bandits are neutral, the Mercenaries only have scripted appearances and the Monolith barely exists at that point in the story. What's left? The only option is to shoot Loners, Bandits, Freedom or Duty until they become hostile, otherwise there's barely anything to shoot at in the first two maps. They should have added a new faction or at least given the Mercenaries a more significant role in the game.
