honestly, from the shit that i saw and read about (didn't actually bother playing the vn because i'm too lazy for vns too), it didn't seem like the gender thing was that big a thing. like i get that miaou/meow is a thing, and i'm reading speculation that gunhild might actually be a guy through some weird contrived shit, but tbh it doesn't bug me all that much in the context of the universe the game exists in
Umineko gets shit for its gender thing, but that was applied to it retroactively since it was made before identity pol had become a thing.
Ciconia is in the deep end of it, and I can't help but interpret things more unfavorably. Like that purple haired american guy who really wants to fuck miao/meow rubs me wrong way. Seems like R07 only writes gender shit when it makes his dick hard.

I wnt through the whole thing with a friend that was streaming to me it like a year or so ago, The miaou/meow thing seems to be a lot more than just "hhaa gender!!" shit and more a "manmade horrors beyond comprehension" scenario. They're supposedly siblings and the excuse given in the beginning is "oh it's just a split personality that formed from his training" but weird nightmare horror visions seemto imply something a lot more fucked up possibly involving butchering one sibling to save the other. the gauntlet mech arm child soldier guys in general all got some kinda fucked up treatment from their governments, there's literally a scene wherethey're all in one of thoseVR chatrooms and one of the kids starts glitching the fuck out and they just assume her connection's shit but then it cuts away to her at a lab table getting her skull and brains picked apart by a machine. There's also the whole "almost everyone on earth has a brainchip with bonzi buddy pre-installed" plot point which is also how they explain the vr meet up shit. Point is there's a lot of background plot shit going on just below the surface that you only see enough glimpses of to realize something very very fucked up is going on. At this rate the second part ain't coming out it's been like radio silence as far as I know.

I see this mentioned a lot, but the legit CPP schizos are explicitly different from the schizos who develop a split personality from the exceedingly harsh training regiment, hence the term being Congenital Parallel Processor, and (supposedly) being born this way naturally makes them actually better at the computing shit, while the regular schizos just have brain damage.

I'm not convinced that the gender shit is supposed to be considered part of the dystopia stuff, though. After Umineko I'm thoroughly convinced that Ryukishi unironically supports all the gender faggotry, especially with the handling of Yasu's shit in all its forms.

I don't think "siblings stuck in the same body" really qualifies as gendershit so much as it does schizoshit. It's also a weirdly recurring character thing in media for some reason.

yeah, it's that kind of shit lingering in the background that makes me really fucking wish that ciconia phase 2 would be released. but, like you, i doubt it will be. there is definitely a foreboding sort of feeling throughout the entire first phase, that things are way more fucked than they seem.

i've been watching autistic videos about peoples' ciconia theories and a point that i often see pointed out is the possibility that it's all a simulation, that evil miaou's prophecies aren't prophecies, but are in fact things that already happened. maybe they're stuck in some kind of loop or some shit. i'm convinced that the factory scene is the actual reality of ciconia.

Doing a read-through of Higurashi and

lol, lmao
Also I still think the Watanabe Higurashi designs are the best anime/manga designs for the series, fight me.

Doing a read-through of Higurashi
Yeah, returned to Matsuribayashi-hen myself, so I'm going through the fragment puzzle currently. That's how I learned the anime was a bit more graphic in actually showing the beginning dismemberment of the dam construction manager and everyone's horrified reactions (though I thought every man there had to cut off a part for himself?). Also is how it was revealed Irie and Takano kept the perpetrator alive with his skull open for several months for study. Jesus. Meanwhile Rena's mental breakdown was toned down quite heavily in the anime, that was a sad read.

I underestimated how long it takes to get through several of these fragments, too lol, takes about an hour to get through ten of them. Least I can fast-forward later for the secret ending.

After reading the first 4 arcs of Higurashi, I really don't know if I could ever recommend the DEEN anime for somebody's first viewing in good faith. It's not Umineko or The Ones That Shall Not Be Mentioned bad when it comes to When They Cry anime and I still really like Kai's anime, but the first arcs in the VN do such a good job of showing the Protagonists' inner thoughts in comparison to the anime that I can't help but feel that there's something important missing in the anime adaptation. Tatarigoroshi feels like a completely different arc, especially with 1500 seconds and Keiichi's inner thoughts during that whole 2nd half of the arc not appearing in ANY of the anime adaptions. These thoughts make the arc one of my favorites to read and make Higurashi so compelling in my eyes.

I get that, really do. I still believe the anime makes for a good gateway to the series based on my experiences introducing it to friends, but I think it does rely on the viewer making that conscious decision to delve more into the series through the manga and/or the original sound novel, which I think unfortunately, most anime viewers don't for whatever reason (laziness, lack of availability/affordability/time). That separates the wheat from the chaff, when you think about it.

You'd think so, but I really don't think that the stuff with the CPPs is supposed to be considered one of the dystopic aspects of the setting. The Jayden/Meow thing is clearly intended to be wholesome and a bit comical, to contrast everything else going to shit.
And with Umineko, he clearly wants us to care about Yasu and its relationships with three of its cousin/nephew/nieces, trying to paint them as sympathetic and sweet despite all of it being fucked up beyond belief, so it's pretty obvious that Ryukishi is a massive degenerate.
And while he's not directly responsible for some of the stuff in Mei, he's obviously not bothered by it, and signs off on everything:

DEEN is bizarre in how it almost seems like they deliberately cut out/altered some of the most important aspects of the individual arcs.
Onikakushi was a solid adaptation, and is about as good as it could be, though it still loses a couple things in the transition, such as the opening working better without visuals, but the following arcs all miss the mark pretty badly.
Watanagashi stealing a scene from Meakashi to use as its opening just for shock failure doomed it from the start, with how much it screws the time loop plotline, which is then further cemented by the changes to the doll scene. It was key to the story that Mion was the obvious recipient for Keiichi's doll, and it's only because of both of their insecurities that it ended up going to Rena instead, leaving Mion as the only one with nothing. You can't have the scene with just one doll because that makes Rena, who loves cute shit, the obvious recipient, and Mion just looks like a dumb whiner.
It also fucks with some of the Shmion placements, since it was supposed to be Mion as Shion who saves Keiichi from the thugs, but since DEEN combined several scenes, it ended up being just Shion instead, making Mion, who already got screwed enough in the original VN, even more useless. Meakashi then follows up on fucking Shmion forever by removing the entire twin switch, even though it's probably the most important part of their backstories.
Tatarigoroshi is just painful in how much it cuts out. The trap lectures from the TIPS were pretty crucial in showing how, in spite of appearances, Satoko is in fact highly calculating and has a strong grasp on other people's psychology, which is pretty important when trying to understand that Satoko isn't merely intimidated by Teppei into pretending nothing is wrong, but has a strong motivation of her own to tolerate it. The pacing is also completely fucked, since Tatarigoroshi is supposed to be slow, as thing gradually break down. Cutting out all the scenes where the whole situation starts to drive a wedge between the club members is also a huge miss in the long term, since the overall story is supposed to be about trusting your friends and coming together to solve an otherwise impossible situation. And that's not even talking about what they did to the GHD. Like, holy shit, how are you supposed to even try to solve the overall mystery without the knowledge of Takano's genocide and its artificial nature?

Its hard to care about the original cast anymore after even Ryukishi himself forgot how they were supposed to act and pretended the entirety of his own work in the late 2000's just didn't exist. The whole point of Higurashi was the concept of friendship. Not whatever that pretentious edgefest was with ring eyed rika acting standoffish and saying whatever crazy shit comes across her mind in a dead serious tone but fuck it who cares right? "NIIIIPAAAHHH!" There's no way that none of the club members would not ever ask each other why she was behaving strange from time to time.

You also need to consider that Ryukishi loves to ramble on about innane shit for insane amounts of time in his stories and has no concept of cutting redundant or nonsense story elements. People give up on reading his other works like umineko for good reason around the 100 hour mark. Deen cutting out most of that to adapt the story to a 30 minute episodic anime format makes sense since its a more time consuming, complicated and expensive medium than writing a book like ryukishi essentially did.

Don't forget Studio DEEN made 50+ episodes and more happened in a single one of them compared to the two seasons of nu-higurashi that just retold onikakushi-hen every episode and acted like rena picking up a meat cleaver for the first time was revolutionary enough to be put in about every single episode. Rediculously out of touch garbage just like Disney wars and only propped up by brand name alone. The new spinoffs aren't that bad at all fortunately and god bless that meguri artist for cleaning up Ryukishi's mess of a plot.

A continuation of Umineko instead of shitting on the great legacy of Higurashi would have made much more sense for the whole forced lesbian thing since that is how those characters are supposed to act in Umineko as 4th dimensional beings. Though its not surprising that fedora wearing redditors like him dont understand the concept of friendship.

I dont understand how those outfits weren't just a one time wierd japanese cafe promotion thing like they were, but now they are actively promoting them in Mei with special events and banners too. So you are likely right about Ryukishi or someone at D-techno being a degenerate.

Does anyone have that old 4chan George image? The one going over George and Shannon's interactions and shitting all over him?

I think its so funny that Yasu planned to go on a murder spree and couldnt even do that cause the adults figured out the epitaph before the deadline
I'm entirely convinced that The Manga is just some bullshit Ryu hastily made up to make sense of his fucking dumpsterfire, but looking back at the whole game with that in mind is fucking hilarious and also infuriating. All that blather about Beatrice taking the fall for the real culprit because she's so full of love uwu *mentally and sexually abuses Battler*, and the whole time she was genuinely intending to kill everyone and only fucked it up because she's fucking incompetent. Fucking hell.
