Just remember that outside of American pop movies and indie horror schlock (and forgotten Italian horror movies that no one even in Italy cares about nowadays) their knowledge of proper movies is incredibly limited. Remember that when they saw The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (in 2022) they were moved to tears by the sheer quality of it. I always felt that their knowledge was kind of poor but....
They claimed before The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, westerns were just a good guy shooting Indians with no moral complexity and questioning, which even a basic knowledge of film would tell you that is wrong. It is like saying "pre-Blade Runner" noir was a cheesy and light hearted genre.
The Searchers was, till recently, on top 10 lists of greatest ever films. It is not obscure. John Ford films are not obscure. The Western
is the American fairytale, so many non-westerns are informed by it. Not knowing
The Searchers is not knowing (and this even applies to England as my country loved the genre also) modern American history. I am not even discussing other great westerns pre-Leone: The Ox Bow Incident, The Naked Spur, Johnny Guitar, Shane, Red River, High Noon, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Big Country, Duel in The Sun. None of those films are VHS only rarities. They are classics that even a mild knowledge of film would make one aware of.
This is wider problem in the Humanities. Literature students know jack shit about important works, never mind bothering to read them. You could study a BA, an MA, and a PhD without even looking at a copy of Milton's Paradise Lost. That's insane. All of English poetry follows from it. You can't understand the history of poetry without it. I see poetry as a good shit test for literature students. Even if, and I understand why, you don't like poetry, not knowing or being aware of certain poems really shows how much you care about the subject (poetry is the peak of any language). It is the same for film. If you don't know the classics, or don't bother with older film, do you really like the artform? Is it really worth your time discussing and thinking about it? Have you ever had a passion? Students don't treat the subjects they study with the rigour you find from a man learning how to plumb, but they should.
