There's a lot of potential for good horror in the Current Year (tm), and there are many good horror movies that range in style and tone, but I agree about period specific films and lack of well written characters in mainstream horror. I think the main problem with modern horror is that there's no quality control. Compared to any other genre the profit margin is ludicrous. Even if it's dogshit, making a horror movie is guaranteed to rake in money hand over fist. Case in point, the new Exorcist reboot made almost $150 million against a $30 million budget, and that movie was such dogshit that the director walked away from the franchise and any future film is in limbo.Modern Horror is in a weird rut too. It can't take place in the 21th century because everyone's got a phone, any time before than always looks like a pastiche of the period it's set in, and American horror doesn't like to have characters in it, so the drama is lacking. I know I saw Overlord in a theater and I can't remember anything about it. For $13, an unmemorable experience is just as a bad as an actual bad experience.
Also, I really liked Overlord, even though it had a lot of "woke" crap shoved in. I thought it was fun and shlocky with well defined characters. It felt like they left it open ended for a potential franchise if it'd been commercially successful, and I kinda wish it had been.
