its a sex obsessed cult to begin with. sex is put on a pedestal. literally your only worth as a woman is to pump out babies and the men are expected to father as much as they can. but the sexual repression these people are put through their whole lives until theyre legal adults no doubt plays a huge hand in how sexually dysfunctional they grow to be. imagine being a kid and youre told constantly that your hormonal thoughts all these natural urges are sins and sky daddy will cast you to hell if you even blink at the opposite sex meanwhile the adults around you are constantly fucking and making babies. kind of jarring to think you have to go from kissless virgin to mother/father of 4 by the end of your second year of marriage

I think it's more complicated than that and that's been established. It depends on what part of the US/Canada you're in, Big Time. There are parts of the US that are basically in the medieval age. Some parts are indeed progressive and no one gaf. But places like Arkansas? There are still plenty of places where being gay can get you kicked out of your home, barred from employment and housing, and attacked. Then there is how things go behind closed doors. If you have a family that will refuse to speak to you if you're gay, doesn't matter where you are or what your material circumstances are. It's a huge sacrifice. I can't imagine losing my relationship with my parents or sister, for instance. (They're fine with LGBT, but if they weren't, I don't know if I could manage coming out to them).

There are still some families that will freeze you out for being gay, but I can't think of a conservative church that will cast you out for being gay, or specifically, having gay sex. There are a few reasons for this, but mainly, church is for broken people, so it doesn't really make sense to cast someone out for having sex with other adults.

Can I move to this reality you live in? Sounds awesome. It certainly isn't mine. Then again, the country club near my parents' home doesn't allow Jews or unmarried women to be members (and before you try to argue this with me, just because something is illegal on paper does not mean it never happens), so what do I know?

Regardless, you said there was NO reason not to come out in the US and losing your entire family is a reason, churches aside.

I agree it makes no sense but we're not talking about things that make sense. We're talking about religion. And I say this as a religious person.

The LDS church will excommunicate actively gay people. I can't think of other churches that treat memberships the way the LDS church does, kind of like a country club membership, but I'm pretty sure there are others that will cast out members for active homosexuality (gay sex, relationship, marriage, etc.). About 10 years ago, I think it was the Methodist church that used to have an ad inviting people to come as they are, featuring gay couples holding hands. If other churches were as welcoming, this would have been a pretty weak marketing direction.

That is pretty crazy.

In more conservative churches and missions, the attitude I've seen isn't really inviting. It's mostly, "Man, I wish Marta and Sarah weren't such major lesbians, but what can you do?" It's kind of like addressing masturbation or lying*. It's very hard to actually stop and is just a part of human nature.

*Lying is obviously a lot worse than homosexuality, but you get my point.
